I think the idea of Nienna's tears washing away ungoliants defilements is unspeakably beautiful. Pity, sorrow, and grief are often hastened away. But they are essential for healing. This shows tolkein had a deep understanding of trauma and healing. Completely beautiful. Has to be my favorite of the Valar.

Have you ever seen the movie 'inside out'? If you haven't; check it out! It deals with more or less the same. Grief and Sadness are often dismissed to make place for joy and optimism. As if Sadness is something to avoid. But Sadness and grief give voice to the pain. When pain gets to speak; it creates room for healing and compassion rather than rejecting it.

Thank you for highlighting Nienna! Tolkien’s writings on her have enriched my life and how I encounter sorrow. I’m sure that Tolkien-who endured a series of traumatic losses as a child and young adult-wrote about her from a very deep place.

Nienna is only Vala, who has been changed by discord of Melkor. "So great was her sorrow, as the Music unfolded, that her song turned to lamentation before its end, and the sound of mourning was woven into the themes of the World before it began. But she does not weep for herself; and those who hearken to her learn pity, and endurance in hope." Valaquenta, The Silmarillion, J.R.R. Tolkien.

The story about Nienna and Gandalf is unbelievably beautiful. Just think how differently the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings could have gone if he hadn't spent all that time learning from her.

Gandalf actually didn't have anything to do with Bilbo showing Gollum pity, except perhaps indirectly in choosing Bilbo as the burglar. It was more who Bilbo was as a person. Gandalf's knowledge learned from Nienna was able to recognize the wisdom in Bilbo's decision and influenced Frodo and Sam to each show Gollum pity.

That brings a lot of interesting what-if scenarios. What if Gandalf was a disciple of Tulkas? We'll get a sword-and-sorcery adventure Conan the Barbarian style. What if Gandalf was an apprentice of Nessa? Then Sauron would be defeated in Bollywoodic dancing competition. What if Gandalf was Yavanna's follower? He'd mess Sauron's plan by changing Mordor ecosystem into dence forest biome. etc 😄

Nienna is my favorite of all the Ainur. Her strength and her massive impact on the world did not come from overt acts of power, but through nurturing, healing, and giving hope in dark times. It’s debatable as to whether Gollum destroyed the Ring accidentally or if Iluvatar played a part in the matter. How it’s beyond debate that without first Bilbo’s, then Frodo’s mercy, Frodo wouldn’t even have made it as far as Mordor.

@@danielriley7380 I simply mean that without Gollum being there, the Ring does not get destroyed and Gollum certainly did not do that intentionally. Whether Eru Ilúvatar gave him a tiny nudge or Gollum's falling in was a consequence of his breaking his oath to Frodo is another question.

It was dropped by Tolkien, but in an earlier version Nienna was the sister of Manwë and, more crucially, Melko(r). This is why she takes his side when Melkor was begging for pardon, as this aspect was kept from this period in the development of the Legendarium. In later, again unused version, she gives a speech in support of Míriel, Finwë's dead first wife.

I already admired Tolkien's work, and that of the many artists he's inspired - drawing on the parallel one can establish between the author and Olorin/Gandalf, the value of compassion and sloth to judge certainly comes across as a common trait between them, and one of the few things JR would convey as a message or principle with his work. Just like James Cartwright said, your own work in diving deep and comprehensively into his writings and the world therein have brought an entire new level of appreciation for Tolkien, his work, worldbuilding and ponderation in the act of creation. Thank you so much for all your videos!

A couple years back, I re-read the LotR trilogy, the first time in nearly 40 years, and for the first time I was struck by how powerful was the theme of pity having unexpected, beneficial consequences. While it is intrinsic to the story and unescapable (Frodo's sparing of Smeagol put Gollum in position to end Frodo's enchantment at Mt. Doom) I can only remember it being briefly mentioned overtly in the movies, " 'twas pity that stayed Bilbo's hand". I did not find it nearly as potent as in the books, nor were there as many references to it in the various heroic characters.

I always wondered about one thing. There was 8 Valar lords, but only 7 Valar ladies. So if each was supposed to be a pair, was Nienna supposed to marry Melkor, and Ulmo was supposed to be alone, or was Nienna supposed to marry Ulmo and her sadness that Melkor caused stopped it. There is also question what the F Ungoliant is supposed to be, altho I doubt Eru would ever create something like she. On the other hand, he did create Melkor so who knows.
@roddo1955
@roddo1955 Жыл бұрын
8 lords minus Melkor(who no longer counts among the Vala)leaves 7 lords.with 7 Queens. Ulmo is single. So is Nienna. Question; Who is Mandos paired with? Anyhoo Melkor to me is like the 'cypher'.the 0 that can't be divided, paired with or create. I like to think that Melkor is the mirror aspect of Eru's own creation aspect of 'ruler' and 'creator'. The one. Who is 1 number that can be devided, added on to, paired with to make 2 or more. From Eru comes everything. But through Melkor everything 'goes'. Where Eru's benevolent side allows the Vala to take control; Melkor is the one who holds on to it. Each aspect/Vala is solid. Has a clear purpose. Melkor does not. Melkor 'knows' everything but creates nothing. He only corrupts. Ungoliant is a manifestation of un-light. Where Eru's will literally lights the stars/lamps/trees and eventually the sun and moon, Ungoliant takes light and consumes it to her own ruin. Seems like a direct opposite manifestation of Eru's 'flame imperishable'. So to me Ungoliant wasn't a living being that was 'created'. She's a manifestation of Melkors' version of the flame imperishable. It always wants for more but ultimately consumes itself. I like to think that Ungoliant is Melkors' literal shadow and it creeps him out, seeing what it wroughs: it takes life, including his own. It's his own wrath that almost consumed him in the shape of a giant spider
@sophiejones3554
@sophiejones3554 Жыл бұрын
I don't think they were all supposed to be paired. Not everyone needs to be paired with someone else, and I like that that's represented among the Valar as well. Nienna has brothers, and that is all she needs. The question of whether Eru created Ungoliant is an interesting one. The elves who wrote the Silmarillion certainly seem to think the answer is "no", and yet if the Ainulindalë is taken at face value then the answer would have to be "yes". Eru made everything, and Ungoliant is definitely a something. But I also don't think it would be right to discount the elves' opinion here, given how wise some of them are. My favorite answer is that she was created from Melkor's thought. She is his lust for the Flame Imperishable. But I think that lust is just a twisted version of Eru's awareness that the Flame is with Him. As Frodo demonstrates in LotR, it's not a very big leap from "X is my responsbility" to "X is my birthright". Awareness of one's own power can easily turn into entitlement. That also handily explains why Ungoliant can overpower Melkor, such that he needs to be rescued by the balrogs. It's not really a conflict between two separate characters, but between the two parts of one character.

The theory I have heard is when Melkor caused the discord in the music, although he certainly had some control on the corruption he caused, he did not have full control. Thus, things like the Watcher in the Water, Ungoliant, and maybe even Tom Bombadil were born. Tom claims to be before the first dark lord, Morgoth. The only way that is possible is if either A he is Eru which I doubt as the council has good reason to believe Sauron could corrupt the land to eventually take him out, or B, he was somehow in Arda before the Valar arrived thus being oldest. Ungoliant may very well be a darker version of this as well as various spirits and monsters that Morgoth/Sauron could not tame. In terms of the pairing, something to note is both Mythological deities tend to have at least a few virgins. The Valar are basically being what if the supreme, true, and original God created a pantheon that was still under Him. Some may marry, some may not.

I believe if you read a bit about the life and childhood of Tolkien, you will find the many figures who taught him the invaluable lessons of mercy and pity. Also not to forget that Tolkien was a devout Catholic ( a small aspect that many brush aside....).... The blessed mother (St. Mary, mother of Jesus) is particularly close to his heart. Hence, you will see nearly all the Queens of the Valar is modelled after Mary's many titles Nienna primarily by Our Lady's titles of: Our Lady of sorrows, Our Lady of good counsel, Comforter of the afflicted and Refuge of Sinners It's quite poignant how subtly more richer Tolkien's stories become if you factor in his faith in the reading

The Ring would undoubtedly corrupt Boromir and lead to the ruin of Middle Earth, but it would be fun to explore because of the effects the Ring has on the bearer. When the Silmarillion was still available on youtube, i used to replay Nienna and Mandos' parts the most. There is such beauty in melancholy and grief. I like to think that the children of illuvatar are spared the worst because Niena takes on most of the grief for us. A bit like the christian parable of someone walking down the beach with god by their side looking back at their footprints and noticing that during the harshest times, there is only pair of footprints. 'God, why did you leave me alone when I needed you' And God answers; "those single footprints are mine; when things were tough; I carried you" I am an atheist but that doesn't mean that scripture is lost on me😁 anyway, it reminds me of Nienna because she gives voice and attention to the hurts we have to overcome while we live. So even in your darkest hour, at your most lonesome; someone is hearing you, Acknowledging your pain so that you can keep on living for a better tomorrow, while she does the weeping for you. Edit: You know when nobody talks to you in real life and you get excited because someone liked a post and replied on social media. Second chance... second failure. I wonder if she still fought for him, after his slaughtering of countless elves and following his second capture, just as he was cast out into the timeless void. I wonder If she pleaded for Eru and Manwe not to do this. I wonder if she still desired his continual release, as Melkor yelled out he would gladly do it all again.

Great video, very interesting topic that isn't often explored! Just a small correction: it's Valië (feminine), not Vala (masculine). Keep up with beautiful videos like these!

What a pity that Bilbo did not stab that vile creature, when he had a chance!' Pity? It was Pity that stayed his hand. Pity, and Mercy: not to strike without need. And he has been well rewarded, Frodo. Be sure that he took so little hurt from the evil, and escaped in the end, because he began his ownership of the Ring so. With Pity.

I like to think one of the many reasons Mandos took pity on Luthien and gave her a second life was because he thought of Nienna, his sister. Probably not true, but its a nice thought hhaha

So interesting how the Valar caused both bad and good things in Arda. Nienna vouched for Melkor, contributing to Morgoth's will tainting the essence of Middle Earth. Yet, her lessons is the reason why compassion is woven so beautifully in the world and Gandalf became the beloved wizard that we know him as today. That's why I can't outright call the Valar heartless and evil. They may be gods, but they are not GODS like Eru himself. They are almost human themselves - just like men are.

Show me a game where pity and compassion are generating sales and it will be a game totally alien to the narrative we are comfortable with. I don't doubt Nienna developed based on Tolkien's perspective having seen not simply the fun of battle, but the reality of it and of everyday people caught up in the tediousness and painfulness of it. Who can imagine the cosmos changing power of compassion...? I wish I could imagine what Nienna told elves in the Halls of Mandos. The Aratar as presented in the Silmarillion feel like a spirituality reflective of Tolkien in a way that is hard for me to imagine.

I think nienna power over pity have some part play over when bilbo and frodo show pity on gollum. Maybe because of their pity the power of the one ring cannot show it's full power over them and made they resisted the power of the one ring for a long time without fell into the dark like gollum.
