Impressive, very nice, now how's your relationship with your floating magical book Edit: I've been playing Nier in Japanese proper (now that my skills allow me to do so) instead of just watching the cutscenes and while I stand by what I said in the video about Kaine/Protag being translated properly, I've been finding a lot of things I disagree with in the script overall espically partaining to side content. if/when I get to an Automata video I will be addressing this as I already had a lot of issues with It's 'localization'. I always assumed 8-4 got worse over time(as this is bssed on the orignal script) and while that's still true my words here certainly went too easy on them.

I much prefer the protagonist being the brother. The father daughter dynamic isn't what ruins papa Nier for me. It's his relationship with the other characters that does. Its heavily implied both Emil and Kaine develop feelings for Nier, and that whole thing just doesn't work for me when the protagonist is in his mid 40s. It feels much more natural with a younger protagonist who appears closer in age to his friends.
@Oataro Жыл бұрын
Yeah true but I do love how fatherly Papa Nier acts to Emil (and the rest of the cast) especially after “Emil’s change” (being vague for anyone who hasn’t finished Replicant/Gestalt) with the comfort and support of a parent but I agree with you 100% the romantic feelings Kainè/Emil begin to develop doesn’t fit with a 40 year old paternal figure whose on a mission to save his daughter

I'm glad it got a remake, hoping for the same for other Taro games that desperately need it. Probably for the best that they started with Nier though, it's the one that needed the least to change, just a combat overhaul and graphical update helped push it to his modern fans even if those aspects were functional in the original.

In Western media father-daughter is popular in recent times. But that doesn't happen often in Japanese media and there are various anime shipping sis-con/bro-type things, so Papa Nier was so much more impactful for me. This analysis of Replicant has to be my favourite. It speaks my mind on the intricacies of Nier seemingly no one else has covered. The complexity of the central protagonist, and how his growth is more fitting for the brother; the theming of the side quests being important to the central narrative, how the new ending is justified - and how the protagonists aren't simply the bad guys. Even little things like how the chapter about the mermaid was seamlessly integrated into the story, and how dinner with the couple with the red bags was so touching. And lastly, how the meta of the game makes its choices feel more impactful. I feel like not many content creators cover these aspects of the game, which I found weird because they add a whole other layer of the game to peel back. It made me feel like I was the only one who saw these elements, but I'm glad someone else could express what I couldn't. Thank you.

Fun fact: Ending E isn't new. It's new to being in the game itself, yes, but it already existed- the details aren't exactly one to one, but there's a written story featuring Kaine with the same broad strokes and overall outcome. Very neat to compare! It's always made me happy to see it made part of the game proper, ever since I knew that- no longer a whispered possibility tucked away in pages the average player might never know exist, but something you-as-Kaine actively have to fight for and achieve. It's neat seeing the wider lore found in supplemental materials get woven back into the source!

Great work mate. Getting this re-release was a dream come true. I'd first discovered Yoko Taro's works without even knowing, playing the original Drakengard....but I don't really class that as my "official" intro, I would have been about 13 or 14 back then, and I'm 99 percent certain I didn't get all the endings, just found it an extremely odd game. I class the original Nier as my "proper" introduction as I was so enamored with the story and read up all the side materials (then finding it was connected to drakengard, I was blown away) and became familiar with its director so on and so forth. Nier Automata was the biggest "I never expected a sequel!" Feeling I'd ever experienced. I went into Ver. 1.22 totally blind, having 1 hope. Ending E would be incorporated and how it would play and more importantly...would I finally get to play a certain character... When the re-release finished the way it did. I was beyond a sobbing mess. It felt like 10 to 20 years of emotional stress coming crashing down. Both real life emotions that one goes through over time, and emotions connected to this story and series in particular. It very quickly shot to the top of video game narratives for me. Possibly even dethroning ff7 as the number 1 game. It's just....so...very, very special to me. Sometimes I can't even convey the words to how important it is to me. I'm forever grateful to Yosuke Saito for believing in Taro. (To the point that Automata was his idea to adapt and connect the story of Yoko Taro's stage play to the world of Nier, at the time) which lit a massive fire of creativity under Taro's ass. And not only did he reinterpret the stage play into a game, they both did it so well to connect it under the "Nier" banner near flawlessly, giving us another masterpiece, Nier: Automata. So I've always been grateful to Saito aswell. Cause his belief, and a large amount of creative input, gave us Yoko Taro and continued his stories. This was a great video mate. Liked and subbed. Cheers! (Oh and I'd hope Okabe's influence goes without saying!!) The goddamn holy trinity of game dev. Where producer, creative director and music composer, just fire on all cylinders And in perfect unison. Beautiful games. True works of art.

Thank you so much for your wonderful analysis! I fully and whole heartedly agree! I personally cannot understand why some people say Ending E weakens the experience. For me it is quite the opposite. Ending D, being the 'original' canon, makes sense as a story of consequence. The player is aware of the horror's they have enacted and in Ending D, finally take responsibility. They somewhat atone by saving Kainé in exchange for themselves. However Ending E, speaks as you say, a story of what we have always felt all along. A story of bonds. A story of relationships. The very people that sacrificed themselves for us, and we have sacrificed ourselves for, are now defying this very world, much like we have, to get us back. We ourselves have become a 'Yona' for someone else. And in that all, I feel like it reflects the human condition, our human existence so much more. We are dependant on those around us. We need other people. We need relationships, connections and bonds. Without it, we feel empty, almost none human. Nier Replicant does what all special and amazing artworks do, (happily noticed your insert of Evangelion ;-) ). It reduces the world to what really matters. It shows us the essence of what it means to experience this life, this world, this existence as a human. And in such these works often speak of transcending, about creation, about our very existence itself. I cannot help but believe that Ending E, essentially breaks the world in the sense that the three of them, enter some form of new existence. The flower that blooms, transcending the material world that we've experienced and making it into something new. A world that has the essence of these 3 characters, that defied fate, gods, and moral to find their happiness: Each other.
@maximilianneumann4787Ай бұрын
One more addition: Ending E tells us, as it does tell Nier: You are wanted in this existence! And as such, is a drop of hope, joy and humanity in itself.
@Ingisen2 жыл бұрын
1:10:19 A parasitic flower, that steals all life around it to nurture only itself. I really hope the success of the Nier franchise allows Yoko Taro & Co to remake (not remaster, REMAKE) the Drakengard franchise to its full potential. I like 1 and 3 very much, but if I only had ONE pick I'd choose Drakengard 1. It ties directly into Nier Replicant 1.22, and would give old and new players a chance to experience what caused the Nier world to be what it is. I seem to have heard that Yoko Taro doesn't wish to redo games (unless he's given enough money), which I can respect. HOWEVER I would like to see a game that bridges the story between the very end of Drakengard 1 and the beginning of Nier Replicant; specifically, the novels detailing the event during the Legion attacks, Gestalt experimentation, original Kaine's life (I won't spoil it here), the construction and early lives of the Androids (Devola and Popola, in particular). OR A game that details the events after Replicant and before Automata. This, in my opinion, would include the stage plays; the Prometheus storyline, the fall of Humanity (maybe a cutscene involving the last Gestalt and/or Replicant - imagine the absolute LONELINESS of this character! Something like Shinji in End of Evangelion), the split between the different Android factions, the creation (and lies) that became YorHa, as well as the fracture of the Red Girl(s). I would certainly discourage any mobile, web or gacha games - I strongly dislike this trend. I understand that phone games are popular in Japan, but I digress...

But man, even knowing nothing, even not seemingly caring in the slightest about the topic, I feel like it sorta got to me. I usually don't like to watch long video essays on stuff, even less if it's something I don't really care about, usually it feels like people just talking at length about some pretentious garbage and acting like it is the height of artistic achievement. But here, and when i reached the last part, I really, weirdly felt something. I have no connection to this game obviously, but I could easily tell and maybe even somewhat relate to that weird feeling where you realize why and how much you love videogames. And it is very clear, that the person who made this, really cares about video games and is not just making shit up. I like that. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy and shit. Maybe I'm blogposting a bit here, I'll probably never play the game anyway, and I got the whole story spoiled for me thinking I wouldn't care about it or it's meaning as much as I ended up doing *simply from hearing someone talk about it*. Thank you for this video. I always love to hear about people's experiences with this game. I enjoyed seeing your take on the endings and the sacrifice of the save file. If I may share my thoughts here, and they're not in any way to take away from you experience. I personally believe Ending C is my favorite and the one most fitting from my own point of view, in the way I consumed the game both as a player and as the protagonist. I happily gave up my save file in Automata. Automata was a game about humans, their relationships to one another and the strength of a good community. You literally have to be part of a network to get the emotionally climax of Ending E in that game, and there was nothing that would've stopped me from giving up everything I worked for in my save file, all to save another stranger. It's just fitting for the overall theme. In Replicant though, a game that I felt is about a personal human journey, I felt that Ending C is the most fitting. To Nier, to Yonah, to our Journey, to Kaine, to everyone we met along the way and also, to the Shadowlord himself. It just didn't sit well with me to give up my whole journey and everyone who died in it, to be completely forgotten and gone from their memories, and from Yonah's life forever. Nier did everything with a hyper focused attitude to *be* with Yonah. He wasn't even phased by the truth dump of the Gestalt Project. I, as a player who is a part of Nier, didn't find it fair to anyone, to erase my existence. And for what? to save Kaine. and Kaine alone? Everyone who died along the way, died for Nier to be with the sister he wants to save. Kaine herself beat it into us when the King of Facade sacrificed himself to push us forward. And Kaine herself had no interest or purpose in life after Nier completed his journey, so as a protagonist in this personal game about going on a quest to save a personal relationship, and after learning the black and white of it all: Who the shades are, who the Shadowlord is, what Original!Yonah did for me and my sister, what everyone else went through, what I put many people through, I stood up next to Kaine's body and felt that the correct decision is to put it all to rest and close this door on the whole journey, giving her peace. I (as Nier) will be in distraught. I will always think back (even though Nier's the kind who always looks forward) and feel for all those who lost their lives for my cause. If Yonah and I found ourselves in different paths in the future, I will question what I did and what I lost for it all to go in vain, however, to me choosing to not give up my existence and purpose for a purposeless person who is likely to be miserable in their loneliness, felt wrong to me and isn't fitting of a conclusion for the story. Sorry for dumping all this! I finished the game a week ago and I have no one to talk to about it so I've been just consuming videos from other players about it and sharing my thoughts when possible. Again, I appreciate your video and your thoughts.

I disagree that things could have been solved if people had just talked. Even if all the way at the beginning, shadowlord shows up and says "let us return to our bodies" Nier would have fought. The replicants have just as much right to live as the gestalts. Nier would still choose to fight to save his yonah. Reconciliation and discussion just isnt an option, they would never agree to just give their lives for people they dont know.

As a game developer, my personal approach is a method I call "indirect choices." My protagonists are defined characters with prewritten personalities, so instead of dialogue choices, I create situations and give the player multiple invisible options. In Chapter 1, after throwing off someone who was attacking you with a knife, you're given the objective to leave with the evidence you've secured already. However, there is the invisible choice of going and taking the knife. This requires you to walk in his direction, to which he recoils against the wall the moment you pick up the knife. The power dynamic is set in your favor, and two more invisible choices lie before you: walk forward to the guy who was just threatening to kill you, now with the weapon, or just follow the game's objective and walk away. Continuing to walk forward, you reach the target against the wall, now begging for his life and clearly scared of you. The game at this point gives you the combat tutorial in the form of a button prompt labeled "End Suffering." Iris, our protagonist, performs an attack animation as the choice. I switch the obvious option, which before this was running away, with the option of murder because the power dynamics have flipped, and the devil on the player's shoulder is telling them to kill him and that they deserve it.

When young nier goes "we're friends!" It feels like a young nieve boy declaring a positive and joyful observation. When daddy nier says the same thing, it feels like hes a bit slow. What 40 year old man declares that hes friends now like hes a disney character? I still don't get the wests insane hang-up with prettyboy characters. It's not new. The gestalt version still exists, and old replicant version. Automata has received more praise due to it being the all around better game. If you were to sit someone down on 1 of these 2 games and hope for one of them to blow their minds with the story, characters and ost, automata is the more likely mind blower that'll garner another 5 star review. Both games sales grow over time though. Automata will always be in the lead but hey who cares. Automatas sales over the past 5 years have grown by multiple millions steadily. And it did so by standing on its own 2 feet without replicant propping it up really. Automatas popularity is pretty much 80% of the reason replicant is seeing the sales it has. If it didn't, it certainly would've gone almost completely unnoticed except by the small Fandom if automata didn't exist.

Honestly I kinda like the english delivery of kaine's line with the swearing anyways, it suits her as always of course, but just the sound cadence of it itself comes off as more pleasing to hear, to me, than repeating the same word/name over and over again like more than 3 times without pause or variation in it, if that makes sense. That's likely the purpose behind a lot of the restructuring in the english dialogue anyways, since most young english speakers (like the protagonist and kaine) don't speak with the same level of formality or politeness more typical in the japanese dialogue. I've actually heard quite the opposite from any claims of the translation being "wrong", I think I heard a rumor that the scripts were written close together or in tandem to maintain the meaning very well. And tbh, after playing the remake I'm sorry papa, but I'm full on team Brother Nier nowadays. It makes the gameplay choice of only using short swords in the first half of part A make sense, he's too SMALL to hold the larger weapons, and after 5 years and one hell of a growth spurt and some serious training he can wield heavier weapons now. It... never really made sense that papa nier could only lift tiny swords all along. Brother nier just feels like... true to his character. It works. Plus, the route C kiss just... never worked as well for papa nier as it did for young man nier and kaine, having intense emotions come out admist the whole tragedy of it. Anyways, very enjoyable video! Thanks for this

He's back ^__^ definitely agreed though this game is a masterpiece it's initial release passed me by I didn't know it was a thing I first learned of it around the time Drakengard 3 was announced because a lot of people were calling it NieR 2 and I was like WTF is NeiR? This is Drakengard people so I looked it up and also in the process found out about the whole Gestalt/Replicant thing I put off playing it for years despite being a major Drakengard Stan simply because I didn't want to play the westernised version of it and held out hope especially after Automata came out and was a huge sleeper hit that one day Replicant would get an official western release and I'm so glad that it happened it's one of my all time favourite games and introduced me to one of my all time favourite characters (Kaine). I pray that the Drakengard games get similar remasters in the future they really deserve it

I played Automata first and Replicant is just so much better to me. I love that Replicant doesn't have "we could have this conversation and resolve problems, but OMG suddenly our grandstanding left us with no time" like Automata does

I didn’t believe that a game could be better than Automata…upon playing this, I realized that while Automata was a better game, the story for Replicant blew it out of the water. I prefer Replicant, which is insane to me because of how much I loved Replicant…but I’ll never forget Wolf Bro. My main complaint is that there are no real changes to the third playthrough, since it’s meant for you to find all the weapons. I found all the weapons in the first playthrough, so I found it to be tedious as hell. When I replay Replicant, I’ll save the weapons for this playthrough and it’ll fix that issue, though. Also, I haven’t played Gestalt, but I’ll say that I conceptually prefer the idea. Their relationship feels kinda weird as brother and sister to me. It makes more sense as father and daughter to me. They were 100% right about the localization. I also saw someone say Emil and Kainé were supposed to fall in love with the protagonist, but I never fell for either of them. That once again feels like it works better for a father. A father being so fixated on saving his daughter that he misses obvious signs around him feels more thematically appropriate

love this vid and just love to see this game get so much love. Only thing i disagree with is rep vs gestalt. The reasons you give for rep is what i got from gestalt instead. Rep felt like it was missing the weight of gestalt and felt the bro/sis relationship made some parts odd. Not saying siblings dont care for each other but the extremes that "nier" has to make for yonah make more sense with him being her dad over being her bro. The i will burn the world or go through hell and back is much more of a parent trait if that make sense. At least to me. This is 100% just prefer. so nothing wrong with ya seeing it the other way or liking the other one more. Just wanted to say my thoughts.

fun fact, Yoko really did not like Oreimo, he found the premise very creepy, to the point where he held an interview about the original Drakengard at the same time one of the episodes was airing. It's also the main factor behind why the relationship between Caim and his sister Furiae is the way it is.

Taken as a whole i prefer automata as automata is my favourite game. Automata is more fun to play, the world is more visualy interesting, and the themes/questions presented in the game impacted me more than nier, but one thing near does better is the banter and chatacters. I have a better memory of the side characters in nier than in automata, and the main party's banter in nier is way more fun.

I'm probably in the minority here but i actually still preferred Automata to Replicant after finally playing the new version. I loved the characters and their interactions far more than Automata's, the world is so much interesting and diverse than Automata's, and the tragic story is still great but the way Automata married its gameplay with its story through its sidequests, its world building despite the dead world, and the sheer horror that all these elements inevitably lead to made Automata so much stronger as a package. Also Replicant's Soundtrack is better but my favorite's in Automata still trump my favorites in Replicant's easily.
@trevorveillette84152 жыл бұрын
Nah you're the majority. Usually the only who preferred replicant are the people who played gestalt or replicant first. Preference roots from either nostalgia or objective quality or something that resonates with the player more.

Drakengard 1 desperately needs the NieR: Replicant treatment. Drakengard 3 will just need performance upgrades..., and maybe a slight combat overhaul- but Drakengard 1 comes first.

27:10 For me there's a significant diference between the JP and us dialog they don't convey the same meaning nor the same feeling One is clearly aggressive blinded by their ego/belief that they're justified in their actions and sees his foe as an irredemable vilain of sorts The other feels more humiliated so to speak there's less arrogance, he's not antagonizing his foe he acknowledges that he fails to understand his pain and doesn't treat him like an evil force but like an obstacle with no way out of a fight, he's more worried about Yona than angry at the persbeing in front of him… I think i'm not exactly very good to express myself on this topic so i may have said some bs. But Tl:dr ENglish is angry and antagonising and Jp isn't as much and feels more sympathetic
@DimitriMonroe2 жыл бұрын
I'm unsure how you could hear the cadence in the protagonist voice and think it's arrogance, I hear one of pain. To me its very clear that across both versions that he's stating he accepts theres no way he could understand the other, and ultimately what's important is protecting his family and friends, he's not pretending, he's willing to admit he doesn't understand the other side. Same statements and same conclusions across both languages. You can think one is better and I will always side with the original in that case as well but I think it's unfair to say the english doesn't capture the intent or is "significantly" different.

I’ve got to say, the story may have a lot of virtues, but it really isn’t a very good game as a game. It’s bloated with dull, plodding side quests, constantly revisiting the exact same fairly small areas and clearing the same enemies, a terrible and unnecessary system for enhancing weapons and using spells. The gameplay is something to agonise through to experience the narrative. In my opinion, that makes it a bad game. The merit of a game has to be the gameplay, otherwise it’s just a movie that forces you to interact with it. Even worse with this game is that you have to do all the insufferable garbage fetch-quest side missions in order to unlock every weapon and thus unlock every ending. Nier Automata at least had the decency to have mostly enjoyable gameplay, the bullet hell sequences notwithstanding. But Nier Replicant despite having a facelift still feels like playing the most generic throwaway PS3 JRPG. There were times I was looking forward to plot progression but simply turned the game off because I was so bloody sick of going to that damned robot factory level.

I liked the original (Gestalt) significantly better than Automata honestly.
