On transcendence and Hinterwelt: You mentioned buddhism. It's actually quite interesting to look at the points where Nietzsche and buddhism, especially eastern chan/zen buddhis intersect. I'd actually say buddhism can be very anti-hinterwelt. Some mahayana buddhists could even say that samsara and nirvana describe the same thing, with the difference stemming from the difference between a non enlightened and an enlightened mind, that every single moment/event is interdependent on everything else and the absolute can be found in it and that the enlightened person leaves all non-concrete conceptions behind and joyfully soaks up every instance, full of worldly acceptance. In zen buddhism the most spiritual and informative practice is to simply exist and take notice of it (basically zazen). Idk what's more worldly than that.

Awesome to see yours and Eternalised complementary takes on the subject great stuff! I've always found the difference between linear and cyclical mythologies to be quite interesting because of the downstream effects. The story that comes to mind is of when Alexander the Great first arrived in India and there was a gymnosophist (naked wise man) meditating on a rock and to each the other was absurd. The gymnosophist said that Alexander could reach the peak of the mountain only to find that there were hundreds of flags there before him. How much of our own prepossession with progress and the actual attainment of material progress caused by this linear view of time. I think the linear mythology of time lends itself to material progress while the cyclical lends itself to spiritual progress. And that makes what Nietzsche is doing with the Eternal Recurrence just fascinating because where does that fit into this model? Anyway just a thought that came to mind great video!

Please note at the start of the formulation in the Will to Power, Nietzsche writes “if” the world can be thought of as measurable etc. In other words, Nietzsche only claimed it would be true under those assumption, which he did not agree with, as we know from elsewhere.

Quantum sorcery has never provenly reversed any complex entropy. Even after an infinite amount of time, a nebula sized cloud of hydrogen has never patterned itself into a self organizing electric sentience, an apple had never turned into a time machine, a planet has never teleported whole into another galaxy. There are very likely underlying impossiblities of orders of things occuring we just don't full realize that no amount of time will change. Your shoe won't get up in the middle of the night and do your homework for you, ever. Never, ever. Some impossiblities need only happen once to always exist, and they simply don't. No dog is giving birth to a time traveling already pregnant t-rex tomorrow through natural means, or they would be every where.

I think the notion of eternal recurrence also makes sense from a Schopenhauerian perspective. Since the will, the thing-in-itself, is eternal and unchangeable, it then follows that its manifestations, regardless of how innumerable and diverse they can be, must reoccur over and over again. Schopenhauer also said we can think of the everyday world as embodied music. Eternal recurrence, or the circular nature of history, is akin to a musical melody repeating itself.

I'm guessing the only way to determine if Nietzsche changed his mind about eternal recurrence is to ascertain the exact dates of those aphorisms 1053-1067. 1888 was the most productive year for Nietzsche with regard to his works that were intended for publication just before his mental breakdown at the beginning of 1889. It's worth noting that none of those works indicate that Nietzsche had changed his mind about eternal recurrence. If it could be demonstrated that the aphorisms 1053-1067 from the eternal recurrence chapter from The Will to Power were composed before 1888, then that would suggest that those aphorisms are nothing more than thought experiments, especially in light of the fact that Nietzsche strongly rejected metaphysics. Also in Ecce Homo, Nietzsche indicates that Thus Spoke Zarathustra contains his entire philosophy and all subsequent works are elaborations of that book even if he says things very differently. I would be really interested if anybody could demonstrate if Nietzsche really had changed his mind.

@@44yyBBaakk Yes, I agree. Unfortunately, I can't find any information regarding the dates when aphorisms 1053-1067 from his unpublished notebooks were written. If they were written before 1888, then I think we can speculate that Nietzsche probably had not changed his mind.

This last interpretation of eternal recurrence from will to power really undermines Nietzsche’s powerful wisdom. It is a shallow thought in that random ordering would result in something meaningful and repeatedly endlessly. It runs against the 2nd law of thermodynamics. I tend to believe Nietzsche was reluctant to publish these aporphisms because they were not really representative to his philosophies, but his sister did anyway.

In an cosmologically relativistic sense this is true, as all events so are our lives are fixed within the space-time. Of course the "return" part is more questionable since at least far as we know no information or memories of our lives is being relayed to the moment of our birth, it's more like we are trapped in amber from the perspective of an observer existing beyond time as we humans experience it. But in an infinite universe that Nietzsche among others propose there will unavoidably be worlds exactly like ours and some that are almost like ours. Even if the Universe isn't really mathematically infinite, from a human point of view it practically is, given that the small sliver of observable Universe (estimated to be only ~5% of the whole Universe) already has 2 trillion galaxies, each of which has hundreds of billions of stars.

I would be more cautious about relativity. Besides the fact that relativity is in contradiction with quantum theory, I would not take such extremely theoretical constructs like spacetime at face value. To me it appears to be equivalent to the Cartesian grid. Certainly, it is useful for calculations but nobody would suggest with sincerity that space has a grid-like structure.

@@Opposite271 It's been pretty much proven with most experiments though. Of course relativity or space-time isn't the end of the story, at least to those who study TOEs. I think most physicist actually agree that space-time is discrete rather than continuous. That doesn't mean it's actually grid-like, it just means a grid can be in some occasions a handy tool of abstraction. But I would say on certain galactic scales, relativity holds true - but we are very far for an all encompassing cosmological model. I don't have religious loyalty to Nietzsche anymore than I have for Einstein, so I' wouldn't consider him the last word on cosmology or quantum physics. He is a great critic of Western Philosophy though.

There are alternative interpretations like neo-lorentzianism, and the fact that it is in contradiction with quantum theory shows, that it is at best incomplete and at worst, completely mistaken. I did compare space-time to the Cartesian grid because they are both useful fictions. A Cartesian grid realist might argue that the reality of the grid has been proven by observation because the addition of the three force vectors gives us a accurate prediction for how forces combine into one total force. But I would disagree, I do not believe for one second that because of vector-addition, that space has a grid-like structure. And I would also call the idea into question, that time is like space just because it is useful for some predictions.

I suppose the infinite monkeys are the universe chugging away and my existence is the Shakespeare work. Eventually, given eternity it will 'find' the arrangement of matter that defines my identity. There is no subjective gap for the vast amounts of history I am not part of because I am not either not born yet or I'm dead already. Without a gap, your next starting point occurs suddenly with your birth whenever the universe 'gets' there again Is this what he's getting at here? It reminds me of the idea of generic subjective continuity.

Why do people keep thinking that eternal recurrence is "thought experiment"? It is not. It never was. I never read Will to power but I read all other texts and I always understood it as something real. It is his most important thought, something that everything else is based on. Do you really think that someone would just play pretend with such important things? He was right about eternal recurrence and multiverse but he was wrong about the reason why it is happening. Universe is not literally repeating itself, or it is but it doesnt really matter. The problem is in the way that we understand time. There is no past, present or future, not really. Every moment IS past, present AND future. How we name it depends about our position in time. In other words there is no objective or universal "now". For me there is no other time than the one I live in. 100 years in the future someone may say that I am dead but that is true only from their perspective. From my perspective I am very much alive. That means that life doesnt really physically repeat itself but we live that one life forever but since we feel time as something that is passing we dont really feel that eternity. Only if you understand it you can understand the gravity of our existence.

But in fact finiteness is inherent in the nature of time as a dimension of the physical cosmos, as finiteness is inherent in the nature of energy-matter as the determinant of the spatial dimensions of the physical cosmos. Time is ultimately measurable only as the running down of a clock which must eventually run down entirely, and thus cease running down. Energy-matter is discernible only as against its absence, a void which is circumscribed by the finiteness of time. Only ideation divorced from physical limitation can posit the abstractly infinite. An hypothesized infinite cycle of repetition is not an hypothesis of infinity, because a cycle implies a finite repeatable unit and if there is true repetition no repetition can be distinguished from another, which is to say that there is actually only one repetition. One "repetition" of a finite unit is simply one finite unit.

Think Parmenides not Pythagoras! Many physicists think that our Universe will keep expanding until it evaporates. Linear tine and circular time are both metaphysical theories. Take your pick! But like all metaphysics it means very little. Nietzsche’s concept of putting living first (over ascetic ideals) is the more workable idea for the Ubermensch and schmucks as well.

Not only is Nietzsches sister a MAJOR problem, one must also consider his potentially deterierating mental state prior to his final breakdown. With both issues at play its no wonder folks don't consider it canonical. Also to the degree that Nietzsche is trying to establish the reality of recurrance he dosn't produce any compelling argument that can't be found in a much better form in other philisophical traditions or metaphysical thought, so it's basically a dud. One can certainly belive in eternal recurance, but doing so because Nietzsche said so is not a good reason, rather it is from other observations and thought experiments that one should do so.

I suppose if you view death as a restructuring of energy, as energy can neither be created or destroyed. For example when you or I pass our energy will likely pass into the soil, into the bodies of worms, plants etc. If the universe is infinite than with enough restructuring of this energy we will take on the same form as we have now.

This is where I totally disagree. If time is infinite and reoccurring doesn’t that mean that the game of power will always at some points be evened out? Then any action is not a forward movement anymore unless it is looked purely from the individual. Instead a finite time would give importance to acts of creation as it would elevate the state of not just the individual but also the whole humanity as the future would not be determined.

Quantum mechanics is far more bizarre as a theory than anything in an occult magical ritual . But what is the criteria for knowing anything ? Very little in the meta sense . There is no Zen logos of it as a certain Zen poet said - merely the unknowable and unnameable mystification of the irrational eternal . Good video. But it seems to me that the conclusion Nietzsche makes is entirely counterintuitive. With the eternal return of The Gay Science, life affirmation is still possible as the eternal return is introduced there as a kind of thought experiment. With the eternal return of The Will to Power, where the eternal return is ‘real’ and not just conceptual, what is left of the will? It’s the same effective response as Odysseus in his rejection of immortality. Human motivation doesn’t respond well to eternal anything not to mention a return.

Sometimes, madness comes with the side effect of remarkable clarity and foresight, and there is perhaps no better example than Nietzsche. Also, certain books of his are relatively easy to grasp, particularly the ones focused on moral structures, like The Genealogy of Morals and the Antichrist. There isn't a single chapter in either of those books that you won't be able to understand.

The Hebrews were the among first people to conceive of a "Final judgement," which implies that the universe has an end. Also, they mostly believed that the grave was the final destination, hence the language surrounding death in the OT: "he rested with his fathers." Also, I'm thinking of something from Ecclesiastes now: "There is no work or thought or knowledge or wisdom in the grave, to which you are going." Does that sound like the sentiment of a man who believes his life will repeat indefinitely?

@@ixisinvestigator6009 Yep. Nothing that I can prove, but I occasionally get these memory flashes. It's like deja vu, on crack. I've experienced it my whole life. Reality is, basically, what Nietzsche's theory suggests. Look into physics. Seriously. Specifically, you should read up on Einsteins general theory of relativity, special theory of relativity, conservation of energy in both closed and isolated systems versus open, the "double slit" experiment, particle physics and the quantum (and why that are a huge problem for what is currently the accepted ideas about the Universe and it's beginning), the Holographic Universe hypothesis, Planck length and how that relates to a finite universe, and MOST IMPORTANTLY you need to read up and fully grasp the speed of light and what EXACTLY is EVERYTHING made of, which despite what we once thought, is actually energy. Matter is an illusion caused by electrons reporting one another, which gives us the sensation that there is SOLID MATTER, and THAT leads you into the next paragraph. You want to know the real reason why nothing why nothing can travel faster than light? It's because nothing can travel faster than itself. Everything is, essential, MADE OF LIGHT. So, despite what we've been told, "matter" is an illusion. That being the case, then we should be able to figure out a way to travel faster than light. See, currently, physics tells us that nothing compared of matter can travel faster than light. But, of at it's core, matter is, essentially, an illusion, then "nothing can travel faster than light" (which is true) only makes sense if EVERYTHING is light. Can you run faster than yourself? LOL... of course not. That would be absurd. Finally, physics does us that, not only if it possible for THE FUTURE to effect THE PAST (you read that right), it's almost certainly true. And the only logical way that all of these concepts and theories about reality, as we experience it (physics also showed us that that perception is B.S.) is of Eternal Recurrence is real. Since everything happens because of things that acted upon it (for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction; and ANYTHING at rest will remain at rest, until it's acted upon by an outside force, then then the Universe could never have begun, because before it existed, there would have been nothing to bring it into existence, because anything that could act upon it must exist within the Universe, which is impossible until the Universe exists. There are physicists who believe the Universe has always been here. Fine. But you've still got the same problem. If the Universe was just chilling, way back in its singularity (or close to it) days, then it could never have begun expanding, because everything[ that existed would be within that singularity, which means nothing could have existed to act upon the Universe back then, and cause the expansion and big bang. Yet, here we are. The Universe is deterministic. Most, not ALL, think otherwise. I've gone on long enough, but trust me, they're wrong. They're misinterpreting the data in experiments like "the double slit" experiment, leading them to the wrong conclusions. Eternal Recurrence must be real. Nothing else can explain all of the problems with all of the physics concepts and theories I've rambled on about.

@@shadowx8405 woowww thank you very much ! but that is so scary to repeat the same life over and over again ! i am horrified. some still says that law of matters make it impossible to be remaded and it violate the law of thermodynamic. how can we prove that the universe repeat itself as a movie. how does this give us an answer us on why the universe exist?
