Everyone started as total noob, don't let you get overwhelmed with all the things. Many local bikeshops in my area already started to offering female-only bike service courses on a regular basis. And many men should IMHO start to learn to service their bikes, too. I've seen so many botching. If you are in doubt, KZbin is a gem on bike maintenance. Just cross check specific topics so you don't fall for the incompetent one. And regarding tools: There are different approaches. Mine was to go for the cheap thing (which brakes and fails after a couple of uses) but then I replaced them step by step with better quality. So I knew what I'll use regularly and what needs to be of good quality. Some "once in a lifetime" tools don't have to be of the best quality. They are just collecting dust. And for the sake of mind: A torque wrench even used on a steel or aluminium frame is awesome for the peace of mind. You just know, that the screws are tied to a specific value. No guessing and feeling. Just facts. And you can easily spot screws that get lose over time and need regular checking (or loctite/screw adhesive).

4:01 'and that's a job I'd get a mechanic to look at.'. Beware, don't assume all bike shop mechanics know what they're doing. I saw a mechanic force my headset cups in completely wonky and that was using the proper workshop parktool press. Forcing the cups in misaligned can crack your headtube 😫 He didn't seem to care, just said it'll be fine. Also I know of a shop that uses a vice and blocks of wood to push headsets in. Dear oh dear 🤦♂️.

I used to cycle a lot in my teens (30 years ago) and I saved up and bought myself a Peugeot Galibier Vitesse racing bike with Reynolds 531 tubing. It was yellow, but I spray painted the forks dark blue for contrast. It was one of the first bikes to have black rims and not chrome ones. I remember having a problem with the rear wheel BEARINGS. They lost grease and kept crunching up. In my youthful naivete I kept replacing them with Vaseline as the grease and they kept going wrong. It was only when I asked my late father to bring home some thick industrial grease from work that the bearing problem was sorted. Shortly after fixing the bearing issue it got stolen from my garage. I used to play golf and ride to the club on the bike. One Sunday morning I was going to play in a competition and the bike was gone and I never saw it again. Devastated to say the least.
