I'm currently enjoying Nigel's book 'Colonialism' and have listened to a number of his interviews. This is a brilliant talk, as I've come to anticipate from him: pertinent detail, encompassing both past and current issues and imbued with a depth of insight born out of a hinterland of immersion in history, ethics and religion. What an asset this man is in our cultural life.

History does indeed matter and which is why many jurisdictions, including the UK depite not having the commonly targetted legislation, imprison people in order to maintain it, it is more than unfortunate that even KCIII has nailed his colours to possibly the greatest false narrative of the 20th C and which has seen numerous, people driven from their occupations, ostrascised, fined, attacked, jailed, and even killed.

An interesting talk but he does have some strange perceptions of the Scottish and British past, especially given that he attended a school in Ayrshire. Elizabeth I was not a British monarch, she was queen of England not Britain. Scotland had its own monarch and dynasty who then invented Great Britain, James VI and I Stuart. Elizabeth was certainly no heroine either given her persecution of English Catholics. His take on Culloden is also rather weak and betrays his own cultural. Protestantism. The majority of Jacobite Highlanders were in fact Episcopalian with around 30% being Catholic. Both opposed seditious Presbyterianism and a Dutch invader as king.

Here are some points of societal change, that have historical precedence and seem to align with many of the views expressed at this conference; • Powerful and continuing nationalism • Disdain for human rights • Identification of enemies as a unifying cause • Supremacy of the military • Rampant sexism • Controlled mass media • Obsession with national security • Religion and government intertwined • Corporate power protected • Labor [sic] power suppressed • Disdain for intellectuals & the arts • Obsession with crime & punishment • Rampant cronyism & corruption • Fraudulent elections Any takers on what kind political movement featured these ideological traits?
