Nigel Mogg Interviewed!

Brutalists frontman Nigel Mogg shares his story of joining the Quireboys and achieving worldwide success, weathering the storms of a grunge-induced change in the musical landscape, joining Nancy Boy and the Peckham Cowboys as he juggled fatherhood and a career in film production, and now fronting the Brutalists in Los Angeles. Along the way he also became pals with drummer Razzle of Hanoi Rocks, opened for Guns N Roses & had a cameo in "Sid & Nancy" along with future rocker Courtney Love. I saw the Quireboys as a five piece supporting Tygers of Pan Tang at Wolverhampton Poly rock soc. Think it was 84, can’t have been later than 85.

Nigel talks a lot of sense here. 1989-90 was the tail end of the "hair metal & glam rock" scene. There were also a few bands doing this bluesey-retro rock thing as part of a new blues-rock movement & were set to become the next big things - The Quireboys, Dogs A'mour, Thunder, Black Crowes. Even Aerosmith & Cinderella had gone quite bluesey. (Although Aerosmith always were a blues rock band) These bands were a totally different scene to the LA glam scene, but the press & media lumped them together. Then Nirvana happend in 92, 93...

As much as I love the Black Crowes, it did piss me off to hear the drummer describing the Quireboys as fake, like they'd just bought their clothes in one day to fit in with the scene or whatever. They were around with that look years before the Crowes! Strange he had that idea. Both great bands though.
