Such a cool video. I'm a CNC engineer (I work with industrial robots), and they really can do that. The laser thing is not quite like that and is definitely CG, but it's still cool. Just want to add that there are lasers that powerful, and even more powerful, but they work close to the material as they have to focus on the surface, but in theory you could build a focusing system to get them to do that. Also as you can probably tell, these robots are as fast as they are powerful, and it's VERY dangerous to be around them. They could crush a human in an instant.

The Robots are real up until and a little after the scene where the lights flicker. Up until that point, the camera is very stable and all the motions of the robots are true to life, with some moderate editing tricks here and there to speed up their motion to match the song. I.E setting up high precision movements and having them go slow on purpose to reduce motion blur from rapid movement to the camera, then speeding it up later to maintain visual quality. All very easy things to do when you have a motion-controlled camera. TL:DR - Mainly practical with tasteful bits of CG used near the end. Some parts of the music were done purely by Nigel separately from the robots and layered/dubbed over them. having the robots mimic the action as certain things like maintaining sustain can be difficult for a robot to do without making use of the pedals on the floor. The bots may have been used to make some of the layers for the sound if Nigel though the quality of what they were producing through the instruments was good enough. but Likely had to clean up or layer his own track on top of them to form the final piece. This means that in the video the bots as essentially doing the human equivalent of lip-syncing. Following the carefully choreographed motions, they were programmed to do. Including the little things like rotating additional axis in a motion to add visual 'flare' to the piece and make it feel less 'cold'. This means none of the visual instruments need to be plugged in, mic'd or anything. That doesn't matter as it is still visually matching up with what we are hearing. While the turn-table actions by the bots may have been nonsense, it visually worked and most people enjoyed it. And it clearly isn't CGI because you can see the robots fixture putting pressure on the turntable and rocking it slightly as that pressure point moves along its top. CGI is possible but is hard and expensive compared to just doing it. Cost for the bots is essential, nothing because Kuka is a sponsor. Nigel could use as many as he wanted because of that, and Kuka wouldn't mind because it is a great advertisement for their robots. As many people see doing something so human, such as playing an instrument, as delicate and precise. Also, CGI would lose so many of the little things if used that would make it feel way more out of place. details of the connection ports on the robots, the massive array of lights around the room, etc. CGI isn't perfect and lighting is literally one of the hardest things to get right. Many big movies have shown this the be true because their CGI just didn't look right and a lot of it has to do with lighting. You can overcome this though by dropping the number of sources, (which happens after the flicker) and by adding a BUNCH of motion blur to cover up your CGI artifacts, using rapid cuts, more active camera moves and more motion and action in general to hide your crimes. So in the last section. There is a mix of real and CGI bots. with clever cuts and camera moves to hid the cross between them. The one the punches the piano is actually real and this bot is doing nothing more than punching air. with the piano being comp'd in over it and CG keys and debris layered on that. This same thing happens with the ones with the laser, as the laser is the only CG thing about it. They more than likely had an extension on them that did nothing more than have a light at the end of it. Lots of their actions are speed way up, but you notice that they really aren't doing any interactions anymore. Just rapid movements that stop short of touching anything. Even the one on the electric keyboard is just rapidly moving its head side to side in one main position, slightly away from the keyboard. Which makes sense. You wouldn't want to damage any actual working instruments if you didn't have to as unlike the bots, they aren't free. So during the first bit where they are being more controlled with less exaggerated motions, they actually interact with things. but for safety at the end, they don't. and the cameras more exaggerated motions and their increase in speed (all of which don't have Nigel in the shot with them) makes you, the viewer, feel like they still are. This paired with the chaos of the scene visually, and the ongoing music over them. You have no reason to doubt that they aren't doing anything anymore. Btw, Thank you to anyone who actually read all of this and got through my ramblings.

Well, a lot of it appears staged and the video is sped up to give the impression of being in time. The music is pre-recorded. In other words, the video is shot to appear as if the machines 'played it' but they didn't. Plus it is not safe to ever put yourself that close to the machine arms--a malfunction will kill you. So the video is OK but it's not showing you what you think it's showing.

@@ManabiLT I take it you've not had the pleasure of watching an industrial robot like these perform a speed/precision display? If given the chance, take it. They're AMAZINGLY agile, fast, and precise. They'll take a glass topped off with champagne, set it on the ground, then grab it, rocket it to their highest possible reach, then stop so abruptly it looks like it hit a brick wall, and then shoot it back down to floor and not spill a SINGLE drop of bubbly. Yes, droplets do fly upward when the robot hits the top of the movement and stops abruptly, but literally EVERY drop falls right back into the glass.

Furthermore, I realized a robotic arm project which detects decayed fruits with image processing method and separates them from normal fruits. So in short, I am experienced in these issues amateurish and I know how much effort is being spent to develop such technologies. And like I said, this is the most impressive video I've ever seen, because it's the perfect combination of artificial intelligence and advanced robotics.
