I don’t Model aircraft but I love watching your videos. Extremely informative. Very well done!

Wow, I'm sold! I've seen stencils used on tanks but on a large insignia like that, brilliant. I've often thought that decal edges always looked too clean. Those insignia were quickly painted on reusing stencils multiple times. I believe they used (at least on the large, common insignia) a wooden framed stencil that they simply laid on the wing or hung on the fuselage. Bleed and soft edges would be more prototypical than laser straight lines. I doubt they hired professional sign painters.

I agree with what you say regarding poor quality on the edges, but I don't think it would be accepted in the aircraft modelling world. It's the same with the invasion stripes, they were rough as hell apparently? We always paint them perfect!!

Well, regardless, that is definitely the way to go. It just looks fantastic. You’re right on the stripes. Most of them went on with a bucket and a worn out brush.

@@NigelsModellingBench If you want to avoid paint creep, try a light coat of clear varnish around the perimeter before you spray your color. Let the varnish dry and it will seal the edges of the mask. If anything creeps it will be clear. Especially handy on surfaces with a lot of panel lines, and metallics that seem to wick paint more easily.

Love it Nigel. I'm about to try it for my first time. So, thankyou for all your effort.

Excellent video Nigel. What I tend to do is because the outer mask of the star and bar is big, I cut the outer mask into four pieces. That way makes the mask easier to work with. Hope that helps.

That's a great idea!

Good tutorial Nigel...I use the same vinyl material to make masks with my vinyl cutter but always have issues transferring it to my model. Thanks for the info :)

One other thing, I would imagine they have painters tape in the UK at your local DIY. The blue or green tape in the Paint section. Same size as regular masking tape but lower tack to avoid pulling paint up. A lot cheaper than Tamiya masking tape.

Tamiya is more expensive,so it must be better? almost everything in hobby is repurposed tool for something else.Suprised they don't sell 8B pencil's and call them 'instant metal' precision applicator...$9.99

Amen to that. My wife is a manicurist. I discovered foam sanding sticks and blocks 30 years ago. She still gets them for me dead cheap. Now look how much you pay for them in a hobby shop.

I have had wife and daughters Nail CA glues and sanders too,my best find has been old mapping ink pen's,they are similar to ink attachment on compass, they have a little wheel to adjust jaws, perfect for applying thin CA in lines,or out of the way places.Always at car boots and junk shop's.

Good review Nigel thank you. Does anyone in the UK stock this 'DN' line? I ask as added often high US shipping charges and then getting hammered by HMRC and having to pay the high PF admin 'Handling fee' just for the sake of grabbing a couple of quid of tax makes most US modelling purchases these days a non-starter.Thanks and keep up the good work and reviews.

DN actually comes from Bulgaria. Which set were you after?

I would think it difficult to do on a built model without having to be very careful to avoid damage to the rest of the airframe but the painted on look has to be better 😀
