You simply have to tell the CanAF to show up at displays like RIAT. You folks are way too polite. Leaving all the playground to us to show off. (Fun fact of the day: FinAF HN-468 is actually half Canuck. The original front half of a F/A-18C was destroyed in a crash landing. Canada helpfully sold a rear half of a CF-18B. The resulting F-18D "Frankenhornet" was assembled in Finland and flew like a beaut ever since. There is opinion in Finland that it should be donated to some air museum in Canada in commemoration of good teamwork.)

@Legio XXI Rapax because Rome was a great empire that shaped the world, and their military was far superior compared to every1 else. Latin names are used for plants and different species etc. because its a dead language and no nation uses it as their language, so its a way to name something with a universal name, meaning finnish, english, italians etc. all call it by the same name. because of all this, its become a habit to do it. if people before us did it, why wouldnt we? you seem like a fan of this subject judging by your name, so why ask then?

What an outstanding display by both pilots. I have never seen a legacy Hornet do a show like this. Our Super Hornet shows are not this good. I am happy to see our Euopean friends let loose and show off the real potential of these jets. Question: Why does the Swiss hornet have an arrestor hook? (8:15 ish). Do they have a carrier in Lake Geneva! Interoperability with nato perhaps? Secret mountain base with short runway?
@skytrotter61445 жыл бұрын
Tom Hadler the answer is very simple even from a little Swiss like me. The tailhooks on Air Force aircraft, serve two purposes, assisting in emergency landing situations and to secure the aircraft during maintenance engine testing. Many U.S. Air Force runways have an emergency arresting cable hidden in a recess of the runway surface. Should an aircraft suffer a hydraulic problem, brake failure, or need to abort a take off on a short runway, among other potential situations, a pilot will call “cable, cable, cable,” alerting the tower to raise the arresting cable from its runway recess. Therefore no need to have a carrier on the lake “Le Léman” which by the way is the true name of it there is no such thing as Lake Geneva, it is just an easier way made up by tourists to remember where they saw the lake... Funny enough as everything in the US is a « NEW » something the immigrant also named a lake « Geneva Lake » attached to a city named lake Geneva with also a Fontana lake at the other end and this is in Wisconsin 😂 www.google.ch/maps/place/Lake+Geneva,+WI+53147,+USA/@42.6029204,-88.5198868,11z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x880584e9f85c4509:0x9eb9a6efc12afe43?hl=en-ch&gl=ae
@kr79745 жыл бұрын
It may be the same reason as Finnish Hornets has it. No point to remove it from the standard issue. It secures emergency landing to cables on land, if needed. As Finland trains a lot with the US and NATO, it gives the option to our Hornets landing also on carriers, if ever the situation would demand it.

Both great displays. I saw the finnish solo from that year irl at turku, and this year at kauhava. Different pilot at kauhava, but it was the first time ever I've seen somebody to flatspin the hornet in a display, both via youtube and real life...

Great for you to see several displays by different pilots in different venues! It seems the older the Hornets get the better their displays are. Cheers for watching .

Interesting, the swiss flew different displays there… here my vote goes to the finnish but the other swiss RIAT display I just watched over at Elwyn R is even better! So Switzerland wins for me :)

The Finnish won by far...But there is more to it than meets the onlooker eyes in the Swiss style. The Swiss maneuvers were excellent antidotes for AA missiles and/or gunfire against it...Providing poor target and poor chance of hit. Airshow is different from real dogfight. But this show was owned by the Finnish chap. BTW: I liked that these were the same type, same subtype planes. (Anyone tell why a Swiss fighter needs arresting hook? OR::Refueling stick?)
@gregg91845 жыл бұрын
Jz K F-18 comes with both as standard as it is a US Marine Corps / Navy specification - to be fair the Swiss was limited with the cloud base at the start
@douglasgurney9345 жыл бұрын
I answered the tail hook question in another person's post answering that. The refueling is for mid air refueling providing extended coverage time
@jzk39195 жыл бұрын
The range of the Hornet allows it to circle Switzerland airspace and dump some kerosene for safe anding /or be arrested with cable without being torn apart?/ These Hornets are not purchased to leave puny Swiss airspace. But when one investigates a bit more thoroughly than just assuming (=ass u*me?) we know the answer...We may find a MUCH more interesting reason. But its been long classified and still is.
@jzk39195 жыл бұрын
Nice try but no cigar! The correct answer is a bit more hidden.

Jz K well they do go outside Switzerland for at least the Tiger meet represented by the painting on the one in the vids, plus they also do go to places like North or south of Europe where they actually can train night tactical flight, in flight refueling and other maneuvers, because you do not need any of this until well...you need it so better be prepared for it right even if it is not an offensive army and more of a dissuasion one it is still an army !? They also go to the US and other places to have exchange pilots it is very common in order to bring in new experience...actually there is one Swiss F18 pilot that actually served for a while on a US carrier...any experience is good experience to be shared.

Swiss pilot also starts with high angle low speed barrels. Both displays totally different styles of flying. Finn explores the low speed high angles, Swiss shows loads of maintained high G manoeuvers

When the C model first started appearing at airshows in the '90s Airshow NAS New Orleans had the new Super Hornet perform the Finnish pilots High Alpha maneuvers routine.Unfortunately there was an accident shortly after with Italians or the hornet that slid into runway, put every American show into Idle. First time I have seen this display since! No one believed it would do that. The US pilot stood his on its tail and hovered.
