Nigeria Builds "Ghost" Airports With No Passengers As Economic Troubles Persist | Firstpost Africa
West African nation of Nigeria is witnessing a severe economic crisis. Its people are burdened by surging prices of food, fuel and other essential items. President Bola Tinubu has been facing heavy criticism for his economic reforms. Though the government is borrowing more money to tackle this crisis, its priorities seem to be misplaced. Nigeria is on an airport building spree. But the most important element stands missing from its airports: the passengers! The rise in number of airports in Nigeria is starkly at odds with air passenger traffic. Watch this video for details.

Perfectly-said. Building of airports in a country where 80% (190m peeople) are poor & financially unstable is clearly got nothing to do with economic sense. 85% of Nigerians cannot afford to fly in aircrafts & will NEVER do so in their lifetimes. It's about corruption, simple. The governors/politicians use these huge projects to siphon/steal money cos that't the way they can "approve" or "borrow" funds which they will shatre with the contractors. Everything in Nigeria revolves around corruption, corruption & more corruption.

Most of these airports are owned by various state governments. Their are 3 tiers of government in Nigeria, we have the federal government and the state governments. The states are 36 in number with each of them having a government which is led by an elected governor. The states are independent to some extent because they have state budget and state parliament in all of the 36 states. So, It is not a fault of president Tinubu that some of the state decide to built airports. Tinubu does not even have the power to tell the state what to do with their budget.

As a Nigerian, I can tell you that the airport in Zamfara is purely political. There is no international trade activities in that state to warrant an airport. The Northern Hausa/Fulani Muslims who setup a Sharia in that far North, want to have their own airport cause they felt left out since other regions have thriving airports. But there is absolutely nothing to warrant it. Even worse, the state is purely dependent on federal allocations to to function.

In my opinion: They need a project manager. They built in bad locations. They should relocate four airports to the four main corners of their country, so boarding countries will consider them usually , relocation each of their military bases between each airport boundary points for security purposes, all other airports to become eminent domain for military living quarters, military operate training, military and civilian hospital facilities, Nigeria recruiting offices in each airport. Creating a safe environment in the center of country, for a highway loop, exits and new development of housing. Bolstering economic growth. For 30 years.

Most projects in Africa are initiated and sited not based on rational decisions but often on sentimental considerations. Reason there are so many failed projects littering the continent. The case of Nigeria is really sad. A blessed and potentially great nation that has been brought to her kneels and ran aground by thievery, clueless and wicked politicians. I hope the economy revs back to life so that those "ghost" airports can be put to productive use.

On June 28th, 2024, heavy rain and winds wreaked havoc in New Delhi. A portion of the main airport's roof collapsed at the domestic terminal, tragically killing one person. This incident caused widespread disruption, shutting down the terminal and leading to flooded streets and traffic congestion throughout the Indian capital. Interestingly, this event appears to have gone unreported, unlike the widely publicized story on KZbin by Firstpost Channel, titled "The Nigeria Builds 'Ghost' Airports With No Passengers As Economic Troubles Persist."

This is true however the fault isn't from the President (Federal Government), it is from the States. Governors continue to waste huge amount of public funds on these 'ghost' airports solely for their own use and their families. No Nigerian Governor ever travels by road hence they compete amongst themselves to own these glorified deserted fields called airports.

In Nigeria, local airports are not built for heavy traffic. It is like that in India too and all over the world. Secondly, there is no link between the construction of local airports and rising costs of foods in Nigeria. Rising costs of foods is caused by Islamic terrorism which has taken the lives of many farmers in the north and caused many others to abandon their farms pending when it is safe to return to the farms. Nigeria is generally safe and people go about their businesses without the fear that anyone would harm them. We also understand the the people from the southeastern parts of Nigeria whose presidential candidate lost in the presidential election are behind this fake news. The names of the people badmouthing Nigeria in the comment section attest to that. Finally, the security agencies have killed more terrorists in this year alone than in the previous eight years and peace is gradually returning to the affected areas.
