NIGHT FERRY TO ABERDEEN: Northlink service from Kirkwall, Orkney Islands

This ferry journey had been on my Scottish bucket list for many years, so now was the time to cross it off. I catch the Northlink ferry from Kirkwall, Orkney Islands, to Aberdeen. There are daylight ferries on this route, but the night ferry to Aberdeen might be more fun.

Try getting stuck on that ferry for 20 hours in a Force 8! Also, the ferry does not do "holding" for entering the harbour, it does the J to suite the waves and tides.

I did the overnight Ireland to Holyhead in 1968. One hell of a storm. Spent half the night in the pub drinking with one arm and hanging on to a steel pillar with the other. Did I spill the Double Diamond? Cant remember. The ship was 25000 tons I think and looked like 1920's vintage. Accommodation was 60 to a room in open bunks with what looked like floor carpet for a blanket. At 19 years old it was a great start for a CDN kid abroad and alone.

Great video. I was on the same ferry between Shetland and Orkney a couple of weeks ago. Just to let everyone know, the outside area you showed is not the only outside viewing area of the ship that passengers can go to. As you come out of the lounge there are steps that take you up to the top open deck which is about six times larger in area than the lower deck viewing area. They may have had it closed due to the forecast weather. Keep up the good work.

I'd strongly argue that it's just two ferries in domestic UK, as the Kirkwall - Lerwick leg is the same very that does the Aberdeen - Kirkwall leg and vice versa. It's the Lerwick ferry that calls alongside in Kirkwall on route. Great video!

I came across your video as I did the ferry crossing roughly the same time you must have. I was a bit luckier however as it was going to Aberdeen after a folk festival so the ferry was alive with music and singing. I also opted for a cabin and its pretty decent. Equipped with all the comforts of a hotel, including bathroom/shower, coffee/tea facitilites and a tv with some movies and tv shows loaded onto it. I would love to do the crossing again where I didnt have such a busy next day and didnt need any sleep so i could just roam the ship.

I wonder why Scot walked if there was a bus ?! I did the same walk as Scot to the Dublin ferry port because we struggled to find where bus went from in city centre. Public transport to and from ferry ports is often really poor because they are geared to cars. Bus services to and from airports like at at Glasgow or Belfast is soooooo much better.

Northlink are one of my favourite ferry companies. We travelled to Shetland in 2015 and my wife tried to wake me up when the ship stopped at Hatston Pier at midnight but I was too tired to open my eyes. We travelled to Orkney in 2021 (Scrabster - Stromness) and decided to have a walk up to the port to see it during the day - the Pentalina ferry was also there. Apart from a few cars and trucks, there were no pedestrians on the walk there and back to Kirkwall. I love the islands around the UK.

The spin and reverse are normal. I have travelled on this route numerous times, to the point where it's boring. I will say that even in some of the worst travelling conditions, you can usually set your watch to 7 am by the fact that the first vehicles are going ashore. The food is always excellent and you are free to stay on board until 9.30am for an extended breakfast. PS the cabins are excellent. well worth the money.

I have travelled on all three ferries to the Northern Isles many times - including the inaugural sailing when Northlink took over from P and O Scottish Ferries. Good ships with internal and external cabins (with window or not) fair food, but some of the crew can be a tad dour and not too skilled in customer care. Always clean, and not showing their age yet, and so much better them P and O were. I think Cal Mac are still sulking they didn't get the route!

Just for info the Pentalina is back on the Gill's Bay/St Margaret's Hope route as it's replacement is on hire to CalMac for the Arran route. I took the Pentalina in 2019 to and back from Orkney, I went by motorbike but it would need a local bus at either side if you didn't have transport. Quite a nice small ferry with a large open upper deck for good weather, gives great views of the land and sealife on route.

Just enjoyed this and many of your videos. You say in your intro that you only know of three domestic overnight sailings within the British Isles but I think there is one from Douglas IOM to Heysham nr Lancaster. Also you might like to add to your bucket list the railway line ( via Newton le Willows) the first inter city passenger railway in the world 1830. You can get a day rover ticket for the Merseyside area which s tarts at Newton le Willows and lets you use the trains, undergound, buses, and Ferry.

Used that ferry myself a bit over ten years ago. Great way to make the trip and arrive in Aberdeen in the morning, with a full day to enjoy the city. Though I did book a cabin, which resulted in my sharing it with someone who had already boarded at Lerwick, Shetlands. Didn't eat on the ship, though. I had boarded coming straight from a big event where I had eaten aplenty, and with arriving in Aberdeen at 7:30, figured there'd be time aplenty for finding some inexpensive place for a decent breakfast on land.
