Finally somebody who applies non-mammalian sexual dimorphism to non-mammalian mythical creatures. Edit: yeah OK not all species of bird/lizard have the females be bigger than males. I guess I'd go off the example of large bird-of-prey species. Still tired of seeing the overused "males are bigger and more badass than females" thing on mythical creatures that don't have to apply to this, despite being modelled after mammals or birds.

@@gorgoaku4444 I disagree, it was wise that they have used a combination of both. Avian sexual dimorphism varies depending on the category of bird. For example, with birds of prey the females are most commonly the larger of the species. This is often due to the strength and intimidation they need to defend their young. For both mammals and birds alike, the females body is more practical while the males are built solely for mating. Animals such as the peacock is a great example of this. You could apply the same evolutionary theory to lizards, for most reptile species the females may not be larger than males, however their bodys are still more practical, often being dull in colour compared to males to better hide their eggs though it isn't nearly as clear as avian sexual dimorphism the concept still carries across. The creator has likely combined both lizard and avian sexual dimorphism to get the most realistic and practical examples for nightfury's as of course lizards don't have the ability to fly, this would completely alter the direction of evolution compared to normal lizards. Sorely basing a nightfury's sexual dimorphism from lizards would be innacurate. The attempt at an evolutionary realistic stages of life for nightfury's is actually incredibly accurate. 👌 P.S. sorry for the long answer, I love talking about animals especially the evolution of animals 😅

It would actually be the opposite. Torn wings make it less able to fly, and breaking scales weaken its defenses. Its ear nubs and tendrils will probably help it sense danger faster.

To put it into some perspective; the first time we see Toothlesss, when he's about 15 probably, his plasma blasts are powerful enough to destroy siege equipment in one shot and stagger the Red Death and the Screaming Death (which has the hardest scales of any dragon). In the second movie, Toothless is 20 and his plasma blasts are now able to destroy seastacks. When supercharged by the Alpha display, they actually blowed off the Bewilderbeast's left tusks. If we follow the logic that Toothless's plasma blasts continue to get more and more powerful, and this `Ancient stage` is what happenes when he's over 200 years old, his blasts could be able to level modern buildings, or at least cause severe damage to it, in a single shot. When fully charged... oh boy. I'm confident in comparing it to actual bombs. Not nukes or the MOAB, that would be disgustingly overpowered. Then again, this entire stage screams overpowered.

@@chadpeterson5698 honestly, I doubt he even encountered an Ancient Night Fury. As the video stated, not many furies reached this stage. You'd need siege equipment to penetrate those scales, and there's no way in heck it's going to stay still long enough for you to zero in. Even then, you would need a modern bunker to resist one of those blasts. I don't see one guy soloing one of these things. This isn't Elden Ring. But you're right, it is impressive. Horrible, but impressive.

Also the point of night furies was that they were black and attacked at night when Berk was already on fire and a haze of smoke covered the sky. And that they were supremely precise and deadly. No one had ever so much as gotten more than a glimpse of one more detailed than a fast-moving, vaguely dragon-like silhouette against the night sky. No one knew exactly what they looked like.

Not a Titan wing, it’s more likely that Night Furies possess naturally long lifespans, and most dragons in general likely live for at least a century or two, barring dragons like the Terrible Terrors and Slitherwings, which likely have much shorter lifespans around a few decades long. Toothless had managed to attain an Alpha status, making him the king of the dragons. Trust me, if he became a Titanwing, he’d look drastically different, and be twice as large as a Firewyrm Queen. He’d likely need to be an ancient before becoming a Titanwing in the first place.

@@firetrap6706 At some point in the life of a dragon, they can undergo a metamorphosis, growing much larger in size and becoming much more powerful, having more baseline shots to fire before they run out, and attaining new markings along their skin. There haven’t been many confirmed Titanwings through the runtime of HTTYD, I think around twelve or so? However most dragons tend not to live long enough to undergo such a transformation. Those that do are old, and incredibly dangerous.

Even though a dragon would undoubtedly live longer than any human, I find it considerably unlikely that a dragon of that size, even one as powerful and willful as Toothless, would be able to live long enough to make it to present day. Even if, by some miracle, he was able to live that long, I doubt he would be of much help to anyone at that point, sad as it might be.

Yoooooo props for making the females larger in size, I was pretty annoyed whenever the HTTYD 3 came out and the light fury being smoother and smaller. She looked very fragile which wouldn’t be a good thing for the “Light” Fury. It was supposed to appeal to younger audiences though so I can’t blame the character designers. Either way this looks amazing! Also a question, would the females live longer or shorter depending on their size? The Ancient looks pretty big and I can imagine the Female looking bigger than the Male, but you did mention that some Night Fury’s don’t live longer than the Mature Age (I think) which I still question if the males would live longer? It's always weird that people make the female dragons bigger and tougher when lizards are often the opposite, males tend to be be bigger and tougher while females are smaller. @@audzollma1352 I doubt it, i'm pretty sure that you have to be born as a titan dragon to be a titan, toothless is probably just a normal nightfury, if he was a titan, his description would basically be a overpowered oc's description lol. (I don't hate overpowered ocs.)

For Many reptiles the females are larger. So i think itd make more sense for a female night fury to be larger im not to sure about size with axolotls tho (night furys were inspired by them as well)

@@Lolamy i believe night furies are more personality of a cat rather than have the same dymorphism than them, toothless was confirmed a "usless reptile" so i feel it would make more sense to have them have reptile dymorphism with some axolotl mixed in

Nah I see night-furies taking more from salt-water crocs with the males being much larger than the females. Not to mention them being literal mythical creatures.

How interesting, the sexual dimorphism is quite strange but possible. Because we never saw a female nightfury but yet again we could also make the guess to say it would be something similar to the close relatives the Lightfurys. I am always happy to see such beautiful art of my favorite franchise which allows for a more dynamic and unique way to fill in gaps of knowledge we don’t know.

I dont think it would have kept growing more ear nubs. Animals bodies don't tend to grow things if it doesn't need it. All those nubs would make it less aerodynamic.
