NIGHT LIGHTS - chasing Tasmania's Southern Lights, the Aurora Australis.

A time lapse movie of highlights from my past six years chasing the Aurora Australis or Southern Lights in Tasmania.
I have been fortunate to witness 65 aurora events during this time, and have spent countless hours under the spectacular southern night sky. Sometimes solo, sometimes with friends, but always in awe.

It seems like the southern lights have more vibrant reds and in general more color than the northern lights. But I know nothing more than what I see on videos of both events. In any case, I really enjoyed your work.

Because you are looking at them more from a distance rather than them being overhead and looking up through them, you do tend to see more colours from the higher altitude lights, rather than just the lower level greens.

Thank you for this. You have had many many hours of night viewing to compile this clip. I have only ever seen a mild version of the aurora australis when visiting Tasmania. A lot of people don’t even know of it’s existence. Good job 👍

Hey Felicia, I’m pleased you liked it. The blue light is caused by bioluminescence, plankton in the water that glow blue when disturbed by the breaking waves.

I have sent a couple of people to look at your video , one said thank you and called the video "exquisite" . The poor Southern Lights are so over looked . I can't believe how many people don't even know about them but the Northern Lights are on their bucket list I find that odd . Anyway have a great day !

I wish there was an active camera to actually view the southern lights online like you can the Northern lights, I mean get real time views not sped up like this. This video is amazing though (I am on my husband's youtube account).

There have been real-time all-sky cameras at Cressy and one is currently under development at Campania. www.sws.bom.gov.au/Aurora/2/1 Potentially you could see aurora real-time from the Mt Wellington or Cradle Mountain webcams too I guess, but the quality would be pretty poor.

No, no manipulation to the colours, the camera is just far more sensitive to the colours than the naked eye is.

Yes, yes it does. We get quite a bit of bioluminescence, it’s pretty special to see under the aurora, and a mind bending experience to kayak in it after dark.

Hey Tim, auroras can happen any time of year, historically they tend to peak around the equinoxes, but in Tassie viewing is often more dependent on the terrestrial weather (cloud cover) and moon phase. In summer it doesn't get dark until quite late, but by February the nights should be starting to lengthen again. The local aurora FB group is a good guide to when chances may be good to catch one.

Exactly the same phenomenon, just at the other end of the planet.

Aurora can occur at any time of the year, but at present the sun is extremely quiet (maybe 2 Aurora’s in the past 12months) so it’s never guaranteed. Then you have cloud cover, moonlight and whether it occurs during the hours of darkness to add to the complexity.

Absolutely. You can see all the form, structure and movement, just not the colour.
