Hiram Bullock was a killer player. Died way to young RIP Hiram.

I saw him do a clinic at Berklee with Kenwood Dennard and one of the school's bass instructors (it being more than a decade after Jaco had been murdered). The storytelling would have been enough reason to be there, but then they started playing!!!!! Kenwood could barely hear at that point (something like 75% loss in one ear, and 85% in the other - his monitors had to be LOUD), but man he could still play, and even almost deaf, he knew how to LISTEN. Some of the most responsive improvisation between three players I've heard.

Looks like Michelle there on background vocals. Great episode, forgot Metheny was also on that episode. Two of my favorite live performers on one show, saw them both multiple times! And Sanborn played on A Wizard, A True Star (Zen Archer).

Ok but the Michelob commercials 😆 It’s so bizarre to think that was once an effective way to sell cheap beer. And probably still is.

this was such a fantastic program back then. too bad the video quality is only 480p...and i also have to add that the 'h.m.s. pinafore' song "never mind the why and wherefore" bit was spot on - GOD, WHAT FUN...WHAT TALENT!!!

I was living just outside of Denver when I first saw this progrum, around 1988-89. Loved it and stayed up every Saturday night to watch. And play John Denver songs on my geetar. Thank God for KZbin because I remember her on the same show as the Chii Peppers and Hank Crawford. I don't think she was in on the jam at the end though.

Watch Freddie Green's hands during the Count Basie bit. NO ONE gets Freddie Green comping right. There is nothing boring about playing nothing but quarter notes, if you play them like that!!!!!!!

I wonder if part of that approach is because the amplification was not like it is today so it was much more of a physical act to be heard at all in the context of a big band

I watched this when it originally aired. Where is the Modern Jazz Quartet? They performed "Django" before Pat Metheny.
@betagemslostmedia60711 ай бұрын
As you can see, this is the complete episode and Modern Jazz Quartet are not mentioned in the opening - you're thinking of a different episode, it looks like someone else has uploaded part of it - kzbin.info/www/bejne/lXmxZKGJateIhNU
