i think what makes abandoned buildings so scary is how it used to have a heyday, and was a place full of people and now it's all torn down and vandalized because there is currently nobody to keep it alive. and to correlate this with the fear of the unknown, in some or a few cases it isn't known why the building shut down and it is up to you to either imagine or find out the reason as to why the place ceased to run

The early treatments for mental illness were pretty brutal, even up into the 1940's and 1950's. I'm sure there were many deaths, and the families never claimed the bodies. Families abandoned members they couldn't care for at these kind of facilities. It's sad, our oldest state asylum has so many graves of unclaimed bodies. They spent their entire lives institutionalized. The hospital even grew its own animals and gardens to feed patients. Now there's laws requiring patient consent before undergoing experiments, but if a person is deeply disturbed or in a dissociative/psychotic state, how they can give proper informed consent. That's always bothered me about "modern" mental hospitals.
@Velo10103 жыл бұрын
I’m not a researcher or doctor nor a historian, but I’m going to say that I think back in the early to mid 1900’s a lot of mental Heath treatments were experimental. Originally known as “Athol,” the large stone structure on the property was designed by Baltimore architect, T. Buckler Ghequier, the grandson of Robert Carey Long, Sr. (1760-1833), as a home for Charles Joseph Baker. Dr. Alfred T. Gundry acquired the property after Baker’s death and his family continued to operate the facility as a women’s sanitarium from the early 1900s through the late 1980s. Psychiatrist Dr. Sheldon Glass around 1988 and expanded the facility as a psychiatric hospital. The hospital facility closed in 1998 and the building has remained vacant up through the present. During the redevelopment of Uplands, Baltimore Heritage secured a commitment from Baltimore Housing to avoid any demolition. Unfortunately, continued neglect with no active plans for redevelopment places the building at significant risk of deterioration.

That's honestly the least concerning actually black mold is much more dangerous for the body and if you got lead or asbestos signs in your body it's all and fair dangerous if you don't check yourself or get test quickly to be cleared off it.

Asbestos is harmless unless attempting to alter it. Only asbestos dust is harmful. People can have asbestos in their house and be fine until they attempt a remodel. Many people still have asbestos in their houses today

God Killer I worked in a building with a black mold problem, everyone was sick there. It gets in the air, all of the clothing we sold, and the cardboard boxes that products were in. It seems to penetrate everything that can soak up any moisture. The lead paint is a problem if you eat it, and the asbestos gets airborne if you drill into a wall or something to create dust. Those are fine as long as they're contained, many buildings still have lead paint and asbestos. I agree the mold is the worst!

I have read somewhere on the internet, cats when they get sick, tend to go away from public spots and die alone in quiet places. Once I have found a dead or two cats in our old house we bought decades ago in a village. Hence, there is no wonder, no mystery, no ghost killing cats... If there are ghosts I guess they have better things to do.

The issue is legality, since it was private property, if nobody can make contact with the owner or their lawyer, there is nothing anyone else can do. Judging by the rate of decay, the cost to renovate would be more than the place is worth. True the artisan manner of the decoration is priceless to the eye and those whom appreciate the craftsmanship; but I defer to the first part of this reply comment.

I agree to a point, I am employed at a homeless shelter and roughly about 75% of the residents here do not clean up after themselves or complain/argue with us in reference to cleaning, I mean really nasty people. The shelter was clean and pretty at one time, but now not so much. Basically. I guess what I'm getting at is that building would most likely look and smell unpleasant, due to the homeless not taking responsibility for themselves.

Jason McIndoe not everyone is created the same. Depression does a fkd up things to our psyche. The place should give them an addres and they’d have to work in order to stay.
