This film reminds me of the 1980 film Ordinary People. A teenaged family member is killed in a horrific accident, leaving the parents and surviving sibling to cope. The surviving sibling struggles with a lot after the accident and keeps her emotions inside for a long time, but she is finally able to let them out. Thora Birch played a bereaved sibling in this movie just as well as Timothy Hutton did in Ordinary People. I do, however, like the mother in this film a lot better. Rebecca DeMornay's character in Night Ride Home is a lot nicer than Mary Tyler Moore's was in Ordinary People. Nora in Night Ride Home did not love her son more than she loved her daughter. She just had trouble with mother-daughter relationships, because her relationship with her own mother (Ellyn Burnstyn) wasn't that great. Her initial reactions to her son's death--depression, not wanting anything that reminded her of the tragedy, feelings of guilt, and wanting to die---were normal for a grieving mother. She did, however, prove to be there for her daughter when she put her arm around her and told her she could talk to her about her feelings anytime she needed to and when she hugged her daughter close when she was crying in bed. The family in Night Ride Home ended up getting back together to work through the tragedy. Mary Tyler Moore's character in Ordinary People, Beth Jarrett, was horrible. She loved her deceased son more than she loved her surviving son, and she never showed her surviving son any affection. Beth in Ordinary People ended up walking out on her family at the end of the movie. I just couldn't stand Mary Tyler Moore's character in Ordinary People. Rebecca DeMornay's character in this film may not be perfect, but she clearly loves both of her children.

@@bermiragates7355 ya when i saw that scene, i was like please don't do what i think your about to do. luckily she only smacked him on the rear and fired off a shot. it ain't the horse, it's never the animal, but because he was thrown from a horse from riding recklessly on it i might add, that's how he got thrown in the first place. a horse ain't nothing to play around with, if you learn to respect the animal it'll go a long way to ensure your survival. horses are very sensitive, but like any animal they will warm up to you, but you can't be an idiot that's how accidents happen. it was the sisters idea to race, but neither of them were thinking or using there head, and as they got close to a creek that horse just stopped on it's own. as someone who has rode on a horse, not race, but I've rode a few at my uncles farm, but when you learn to ride you also learn how to slow the horse or make him stop. you never want the horse to make that decision, because if he decides to stop and you ain't holding on right, you might fall off or get thrown. now maybe they have done it before, but all it can take is one mistake and your life can be over. Christopher Reeves will always be Superman to me, but the actor is not superman in real life, and unfortunately he had a bad accident and got stepped on. he loved horses to, but i bet that day he probably wished he didn't have him. he managed to stay alive as long as he could've, that's a real superman right there, but the only thing your trying to fight in that state is time.

Is it too much to ask that she would remember that she still has a living child who still needs to feel like she’s needed and loved? And to hate the horse that he was riding when he got thrown off. The horse didn’t do it on purpose. It reminds me of when my sweet little dog does something that displeases me, and I get mad at him. He doesn’t understand why I’m mad at him but his eyes are hurt and they just keep asking me to forgive him, although he doesn’t understand what he had done to make me mad at him. When I finally look back at him and pet him and apologize for having been mad at him for something that he thinks he must have done wrong, although he doesn’t know what it was and doesn’t understand, he’s the happiest little guy that you’ve ever seen.

Simon was riding recklessly and the horse just stopped at the waters edge . Horse could just as easily have broken its leg landing in the rocky creek. Stupid accident but definitely not the horse’s fault.
@Rose-xy5pe8 ай бұрын
I thought the part where she said that them losing Simon wasn’t the same as her losing him was very cruel. Insisting that she was a special case because she gave birth to him, as if she’s implying that his own father, sister, and grandmother didn’t love him as much as she did.
@klassicalmuzik2 жыл бұрын
I wonder how this film was titled “Night Ride Home”. I thought maybe “ride home” symbolizes how the destination of Simon’s last ride was back “home” to heaven. But I think there’s more to the title than that?
@scottw67042 ай бұрын
One of Burstyn's lines as she's talking to De Mornay is how she didn't feel prepared to help (shortly after the accident), and how De Mornay had never gone to her to help. Burstyn mentions the feeling of panic during this revelation during the "Night Ride Home". So it might be as simple as that.

man why is it the best movies and stories are always the one's not watched or read by the masses, i had no idea how this movie might go coming into it. but when i saw Thora Birch name as a credit, i knew it was gonna be something deep and heavy, and boy did they deliver on that. this had me glued from start to finish, if yall didn't shed a tear a few times you ain't human. Thora is incredible, one of the most underrated actors, but everybody in this especially Keith Carradine did a fantastic job. all that from a horse, but that's the thing, there's no words that can explain a death like that. they were going too fast, and if you don't know how to slow the horse down you can get thrown over. it's not the animals fault, but a death like that, that happens so suddenly, everybody suffers from it. the worse part is when a sibling is in the middle, because she's going through it to, and it's gonna be even harder on them because she was there. the most painful part was the funeral, watching that was so sad and depressing. I've dealt with a few of those in my family, but nothing can compare to losing a sibling. that's the kinda death that can tear a family apart, and the cause might not even be anyone's fault all the time. sometimes it can be, but it's not always so. they seem just like a normal family, but before there son died, the last thing his dad said to him was, im not angry im just disappointed. you know that had to sting, the mom blamed herself for teaching him how to ride, but we also learned from her mom was that she showed her son more love than Thora. so she had no idea how she was feeling and dealing with it, she blamed herself for wanting to race him, but it's nobody's fault. i don't think a helmet would mean much, maybe protect the head, but a horse can throw you pretty hard. so landing on your back in very shallow water with rocks at the bottom wouldn't be very good. but what a movie, i wish there more, but i can only handle so much.

Just accept the guilt and do right next time. Hopefully there will be a next time. All blame lay at the feet of both sister and mother and NOT the horse. If you as a parent want to overrule the other parent then you must also stand and take the consequences. No self pity parties! No empathy! I feel for the poor dad and young farmhand. They are the reel victims here. The daughter-at least she realizes her fault in it all. As for the grandmother-totally uncalled for criticism on the father. It was her daughter whom not even she herself could handle or control, fault. I hate how the wife keeps trying to make the dad feel responsible for her being an idiot and disrespectful wife. Disobedient to her marriage vows. What a selfish woman forcing her family to move cause if her stupidity and then not harming and causing a family break up! I hate people like this. They're the one always causing heartache and others must pay. So not on but I'm not allowed to say what se should have done cause it's not comment friendly. I absolutely love the honesty and resourcefulness of the secretary. He should have listened to her. Moral of the story- don't be selfish, self centred nor a misandtrist. Stand together as parents. Another very important thing NEVER have a favourite child!
