18 minutes in and I’ve had to stop what I’m doing to skip commercials 3 times already. I’m torn between helping you get the bag and cleaning my house… sigh so many commercials

I havent finished the segment about hazing yet but im at the 41:01 mark and the conversation so far is frustrating for me for these reasons: I go to VCU in Virginia and there was a hazing incident that garnered national attention because a white freshman died. And that is amongst whatever other cases from one calendar year that are related to the topic. Also i cant imagine how this could possibly be a bad thing? I understand that laws in america are most often used the most severely on the most vulnerable so there is lots of risk for these laws to be weaponized onto black orgs period BUT i dont think tha fact alone needs to control how WE think and discuss the concept. There were far too many stories within my first year or so on campus of very horific and disturbing situations within the d9 orgs. It always troubled me how young we were and how much harm was being perpetuated on each other ESPECIALLY on a pwi campus. And it wasnt always particularly hazing but also other behaviors like physical and s@xual assault that would be swept away. Behaviors that would be seen as inappropriate through any lens but especially through the lens of supposed black excellence. And this is without beginning to unpack the homophobia, classism, misogny, etc. A lot of this behavior was deemed acceptable because of the lack of accountability for these actions. This is why this conversation disturbs me most because this is another scenario of poweful ppl/institutions being given excuses for harm. And i can understand imagining this law as random but any law can be looked at this way without proper context. The explanation around biden having this as a policy priority since he was under Obama allows for a track record around this decision that could reasonably explain that this is something that biden wanted to deliver on for his 'legacy' before his career is over. That doesn't make the policy automatically good but it also doesn't mean that their aren't problems in black greek orgs. If something touted as good harms young black ppl why continue to hold it up especially without critique. As a young black person outside of the greek orgs responses like silence and excuses whe it comes to these orgs kinda scare me and make yall look brainwashed or in the sunken place or something. Maybe theres something outsiders are all missing but it doesnt look good
