Looks fun! That “top shell” you showed at the beginning is called a wavy turban!

It must be so exciting to go shelling where everything is new to you! I have 4 of the California sand dollars framed on my wall and 4 more that I made into Christmas ornaments, all gifted to me during an international beachcombing mail swap.

You're a champ Julie! What a great hunt and so many different shells! I thought maybe...maybe one of the shells was an Alternate Tellin? But like Jamie, I've never truly hunted the Pacific Ocean. Great video Ladies...thank you all for taking us with you!

I lived in Santa Cruz for the last 25 years. You’re not gonna find Sand dollars on that beach and if you did, they would be the size of grains of sand considering how much traffic that Beach gets. Go up the coast north to Davenport. You may even find some of those old glass floats.

Loved this one featuring CA finds. As a little kid, we lived in CA and Santa Cruz was the closest beach but we normally went to the Aptos Beaches (thinking 15 minutes further south). Since I was just a little kid, I mainly found what was on the beach and were mostly the purple dwarf olives. Also found a few clams, black turbans, limpets, a beat up wavy turban, and my little black (palm sized) abalone - last shell I found in Monterrey a month before we moved. The CA sand dollars I have were all gifted by my aunts. Been on the east coast for a LONG time now and mostly shell in the Carolinas (great shelling, hope you get there). Spent one full afternoon/night in Long Beach, CA, before boarding a cruise ship and hit a beach and wow, unbelievable! I could have easily filled 2 gallon bags but kept it to a quart since I had to smuggle onto the cruise ship in my pockets. If you ever get to Southern CA, I'd be happy to let you know which beach and where to look. Someone passed that onto me and it did not disappoint. Such a variety too. Same if you ever get to NC. I really enjoy your videos - ya'll would be so fun to go shelling with!!!

Thank you soooo much for watching. Yes! If we had more time we would have tried other beaches in the area. It was a work trip so I was super happy that we were able to get a little beach time in. I shelled NC out banks OBX when I was like 19 and the cool color clam shells and keyhole sand dollars were amazing. I keep saying I want to go back! That would be a fun video! Southern CA would be great too! If I am ever in the area or heading that way I will let you know! Thanks again for watching and the fun comment!!

Hi Jamie. Fun adventure on a new and quite different beach. You know I was drooling over that sand dollar😜! I love the Cali Rock Scallops, so beautiful. I had a friend who lived on the Pacific coast who had a huge Abalone farm. I use to wire wrap pendants for them out of the pieces they cut. They sent me an Abalone larger than the one you were holding and I treasure it along with many smaller ones. Thanks for taking us with you!

The only place I have found abalone is Carmel California, Northern part of the state. The ones I found were not huge but I did have luck there. You guys are having so much fun!

I’m surprised you were surprised at the finding the California mussel. They are very common here on the California coast. I usually pass them by. 😊

10:20 Crassadoma gigantea... I had a hinged one, mint condition, perfectly cleaned (chocolate brown on top), fantastic sculpture with swirly radial ridges. 167 mm tall, dived at Santa Cruz at 70 m depth. I cost me a good amount. I gave it away with the rest of my collection. I have kept the large 160 mm Megastaea turbanica though, the 137 mm Megastraea undosa is gone as well. I have sent you a photo on the other social media. I remember I had a lot of Spondylus shells from Santa Cruz, but that was Isla Santa Cruz in the Gulf Of California, Mexico. At 12:14 that might be a Crassadoma gigantea as well, the juvenile shell still looks like a genuine scallop.

Sorry about your friend getting wet, but I have been admiring her shoes. The rough pittock looks a lot like our Atlantic clam in SC. And those mussels are larger and heavier/thicker than ours also.

I wish you could have gone to Stinson Beach north of San Francisco, across the Golden Gate Bridge into Marin County, and across the mountain. One end of Stinson Beach has sand dollars by the gazillions and the other end where it has fine gravel has tons of sea glass. There are also sea urchins and other types of shells. I was glad to hear you had fun. I hope your friend who fell is okay. And, of course, I knew you at least had your feet wet! lol

Hi Jamie. I grew up in southern California, and I remember frequently looking for those big California mussels. They are so pretty. I now live in SW Washington state. If you want to find sand dollars on the west coast, I would recommend shelling in NW Oregon or along the coast in Washington (although mid to northern Washington beaches are better in my opinion.) on some beaches you can find agates as well as shells. If you come far enough north, especially near the San Juan Islands, you might be able to find a Lewis moon snail shell. They are huge. In my opinion, not as colorful as those gorgeous blue ones you find in the NE. You also might find some really large clam shells. Geoducks live up that way. Of course, the west coast shellers have to contend with a powerful pounding surf which often breaks the shells. Hope that the next Calif. trip allows you the chance to come north and explore our beaches. Thanks for sharing.

The iridescent inner surface is common to many bivalves. It’s called nacre. Here is Florida we seen it often inside pen shells
