You have given an old lady a reason to smile, to awww, to wow! This is super. I was a huge collector my self until 2017. I still have a few but lots you hold up I’ve never seen or ones I had found myself! Your beaches are incredible! Keep combing💞💞💞

Hi girls! I made it! So many pretty shells today, it's great to see so many cones and horse conchs, scallops, too! I'm so happy for you, Sharmon! Hearing you say that you love the sounds of shells in the waves made me think of the only time I ever made it to Sanibel, fifty years ago. I had finagled a ride down the coast from Pensacola and only was allowed five minutes before we had to head north again. I dumped all the contents from my army surplus rucksack and sprinted down to the water. The shells sounded like wind chimes as they rolled in the waves and I scooped great handfuls into my rucksack and carried it, dripping seawater, back to the car where my friend was waiting rather impatiently. I made so many pretty things from all those shells. So glad you were given some lovely shells not common to your area! I used to trade shells from many places as a child. My collection was prodigious by the time I gave it to my niece! Not going yo say how often I have kicked myself for doing that! Oh well, I have started a new collection and am happy with what I have been given or bought. One day, I hope, I can collect some shells of my own. Much love to all from Rebecca, the Lost Mermaid ❤

I wish I had been able to see Sanibel all those years ago. I can only imagine what it must have looked like - especially before the causeway was being built and you could only get to the island by ferry. I've seen photos and they just make me drool. I'm glad you were able to experience it - even for a very short while ❤️

One day last April the most amazing shell on Keewaydin was you favorite Sharmon, the Florida Fighting Conch. The variety of colors, the shine factor and the multitude just blew me away. I took the Keewaydin Shuttle last April hoping for some gorgeous shells. Honestly we found a better variety on Kice and South Marco. Once I realized the cones, olives and whelks were scarce I focused on the Florida Fighting Conch. I left with a huge bag of them in all shapes, colors and patterns. I am so happy I did, I have a beautiful tall cylinder vase in my NH window that reminds me of SWF. Thank you for your videos.

What a great walk! That huge alphabet cone is so special. I do watch the SiS channel and it’ll be fun to compare the finds! As for the coral, you did touch on the reason why stony coral is illegal to collect-it’s difficult to tell if it was washed up or if someone chiseled it from a formation where it provides reef habitat. And because people are jerks sometimes, everyone has to be punished. I like that you mentioned ‘over-collecting’, which is a discussion some shell collectors are having. I personally believe what you do is the ethical way to collect and share. The shells typically found in beach stores or online often involve the killing of the animals and is just sad to me.
@SWFBeachLife
@SWFBeachLife 3 ай бұрын
I LOVE looking at the shell shops but I never buy for that very reason. It makes me sad to think all those animals are killed for their shells. But I thank you so much for your kind words! 🙏🏼 And yes, with the coral I'm thinking it's like feathers - you can't tell if you found it or had to kill something for it so it's all illegal. Fine by me if it helps protect our reefs!!!

I gasped when I saw you pick up those big cone shells! Here in Australia, we are all warned from childhood by our dads yelling at us, NEVER to pick up cone shells, as they have a harpoon inside their shell, that can shoot out - up to a metre long - and sting you very painfully - sometimes they can even kill you with their sting! Are your cone shells stingless in America? Lucky you, if they are! Ours look very similar to yours. They are beautiful shells, but even if they are empty here in Oz, often the lethal blue ringed octopus will be hiding inside - it's a tiny octopus that can kill you within 10 minutes if you are bitten - its bite is 10 times more poisonous than cyanide! My Dad always told me - this is Australia, always watch your back and carry a big stick, because something's trying to bite you on the bum! I was intrigued to hear that part of that beach you were combing, was privately owned. Australians do not tolerate private beaches, no matter how wealthy the landowner is - the beach is free and belongs to every citizen, so I heartily disapprove of private beaches. It's like claiming you own a patch of the sky!

Here in the states you can't own any of the beach that gets wet by the tide, so those people own beach front property, but they can't stop people from walking along the beach. I agree - no beaches should be private! There are some areas that I have a really hard time accessing the beach and have to walk a few miles to get to the "good" spots. 🤷‍♀️ And your country has all the dangerous critters! Our cones do sting, but the poison is more like a bee sting - nothing like your cones or that deadly octopus. If I were to ever beachcomb in Australia I would wear gloves for sure! That being said, your country has some GORGEOUS shells!

Hi , I see you always at the beach collecting shells. I have the same hobby, just last week I was at Jensen Beach Florida and had the opportunity to collect some shells. But your shells are very fascinating. Please give us an idea to where I can go to collect shells like yours. My name is Alan, looking forward on sunday for your new video.

Sharmon is there a book that you particularly recommend for shell identification? And pretty pictures 😁 I love your commentary and how well you know your subject! ❤ Its such a pleasurable escape watching you. Greetings from land bound Windsor in England

If I were to tell people to purchase one book to ID their Florida shells, it would be this one: amzn.to/3aqkmO0 There are other books by the same authors for other state shells, but for Florida, this book has been like a "bible" for me! What I didn't know about identifying shells is that not all shells live all over the world. There are certain areas that certain species will live, so it's important to know where your shell came from when you are trying to ID it. I have loved this journey learning about the beach, the animals and especially the seashells!

I have done private shelling tours from Marco to the 10K Islands, but have never done the Hemingway Shuttle. I'm going to Marco for work in June and I think it's time I finally give it a try! Do you have the best luck shelling down the left or right side of the beach? I'm kinda bummed we're going in the summer when shelling isn't the best, but I think I'll still give it a try!

I had a heart break today, I was going through my shells, I have a giant clear ginger jar that I keep them all in and I havent looked through them in a while, so I did, I get to the bottom where all the small shells are, I grab a handfull and one has a tiny piece of shell in it so I get my tweezers to delicately remove the stuck shell, wait a min....is that.......? yeah..... it was a tiny little hermit crab!!! Ohhh! I was so sad, its little pincher claw was trying to cover the shell opening and it must have died like that.........Im still not over it.
