So good to see you found a method that you can make some progress with! But here's yet ANOTHER suggestion!!! You gave many friends who truly care for you, and you have many friends who you have cared for and helped out on numerous occasions. Sooooo, how about inviting a whole bunch of friends over for a Paper Party!!! Each can bring their steamers and scrapers and some perhaps ladders, but all can bring their love! You could have 3 or 4 working together in each room upstairs, and have a contest of it between the teams! Food could be brought along to keep everyone's energy up, and a simple hearty supper provided for everyone at the end of the day! It may be amazing how much could be accomplished and I know that many of them have had experience with wallpaper! I would love to come join in as well, but there's hundreds of miles plus an Ocean between us!!!

Loving all the positivity here. I'm with them all, honestly! But as a long time viewer...Chateau DIY days...it seems that your heart just isn't in it anymore. Life goes on, yes, and you do what you have to do, but with all your comments lately about "looking at" other projects, I keep thinking that you'd be happier letting this place, and its memories go, and putting your heart and soul into a smaller home...not necessarily a big chateau...that you can truly make your own. My own humble opinion, mind you all, shared by others based on previous comments. I want to see the happy Phil back, and I hope that once your momentum gets going that you'll find the joy once again either here at Chateau du Bailleul or elsewhere!

I don't know much about renovating a chateau in France, but here in Canada, when there's mold on the walls, the contractors tear down the gyprock because it's compromised. They simply put in new gyprock. Also, maybe it's because it's a video, but some rooms & hallways seem particularly small. I'd knock down the extra walls that were put up when it was converted into a hotel.

My experience of hanging and removing wallpaper is to remove the vinyl sheet first without poking holes in it the best you can do. And instead of a spray bottle I used a bucket of warm water and vinegar and applied it with a sponge and start at the top so the water runs down the wall and soaks that while you are using the steamer. It always seemed like when you perforated it that it doesn’t absorb as well. I’ve removed a lot of wallpaper and was hired frequently because it’s such a stressful job. So just have patience and know it’s not going to be a quick job,but a very rewarding one when accomplished 🙈. I like the comment about put on some of your favorite music and a glass of wine or a hot toddy and try to make it bearable. The best of luck to you,I wish I could come and help you! ☺️

In the US, you would have to call in professional mold remediators before you could sell the buildings. They would come in suits with respirators, bags with seals, and no one could be there, just like when they take out asbestos. To kill the mold, spray it with a mixture of thyme essential oil with linool and distilled water. It won’t take away the stain but it will kill the mold down to the roots. You also need massive air purifiers running. Chances are good that the mold has permeated all your belongings, including furniture, books, carpeting, wood furniture. Anything porous. You need to take a mold toxin test yourself but you can get a good quick test by using a computer and going to the VCS test by Schumaker on line. It’s cheap, pretty accurate and highly informative. If you test positive, follow up with an integrative doctor who can tell you how to get the mold out of your body. It is a toxic poison.

Love what you’re doing. I was thinking about what you were saying about the difficulty of adding insulation. If you focused on installing only the exterior walls this would make that task much easier than insulating all the walls. You could carefully remove the architectural details from the inside of the one outer wall, stud it, insulate it and run any pipes through it. Add more power outlets if you like. The reinstall the paneling and plaster boards over the new studs. This will allow you to deal with damp, route pipes etc. and insulate. I’d do one room at a time.

Phil thanks for letting us know which you found the most useful to take the wallpaper off, have you found your favourite music to work to yet l bet you have a lovely singing voice. Looking on the bright side at least you now what as caused the problem my issue in the kitchen is the paint which was especially made for kitchens is peeling off and the new plaster is like sand is falling off, at seventy and with Fibromyalgia l am not able to do much the house is 1908 and it is mostly on the internal wall. It’s difficult to find some who will be honest to identify the problem my thoughts so far are new damp cause needed, the plaster should have been lime one, the paint looks the same as the top sheets of vinyl. I don’t think you will have time to read this that’s ok it was ment to make you feel better about your walls. See you soon sending big huggles from Lynda you can do this Phil

Wallpaper glue based on cellulose is the ideal feeding ground for fungus. You will have to wash the walls well with alcohol to kill all the spores in the wall, before doing anything like painting. You would need proper advice about what kind of breathable paint you should use. Wishing you a lot of stamina... had my own experience with mouly walls.

If you're going to continue spraying (I'm not sure if you've given up on that) I'd suggest getting a sprayer that you pump up with pressure, like the ones people use in the garden. You could cover a larger area quicker and your hand wouldn't get tired. :)

Phil, like many others been there done that. What I found worked for me was the angle that you pull the paper off the wall. Try a sort of zig, zag method when pulling, start left or right and pull up at a 45 degree when over the half way point across the strip change the directio and go the other way, also when applying the water start at the top with your spray and let gravity help take the water down, I always soaked mine 2 or 3 times before I scraped. Hope this helps. You wil have mastered it and be an expert by the time you finish, lol.
