Night-time at the homestead and orphanage with baby elephant, Phabeni 🐘

Nights at the HERD homestead have a different kind of beauty. With the elephants peacefully eating under the lights and the distant laughter of the carers, it is one of many reasons why we love the bushveld ✨
Baby Phabeni has a small nap before Adine arrives, but is eager to enjoy playtime with Adine and Liverson once awake. Lammie and Spotty stay close by as Adine softly sings a lullaby to encourage Phabeni to sleep. While Liverson prepares his early evening bottle, Adine shares some thoughts about Phabeni and the connection they share compared to that with Khanyisa. After an interesting milk bottle feeding, Adine spends more time with Phabeni before he heads back to bed, but all in his own time. Phabeni is such a special elephant, and we love to see his bubbly personality shine through!

I used to sing slowed down beatles songs to my niece. She liked the melodies and fell asleep when nothing else worked. Lek, from Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai Thailand sings her ellies to sleep with Que Sera Sera by Doris Day and even the adult ellies fall to sleep. Seeing you with Phabeni is so heartwarming. Your kindness and love for him is his strength.

I think we've got a Future Head Bull right here, he sure likes to be in charge!! I notice, during bottle time, that he REALLY likes to be in charge. Pulling back, hence pulling his carers around, is one of the ways he tells himself he's in charge. One time I noticed, I think it was Liverson, feeding him in the bush and when Phabeni pulled back Liverson pulled the bottle from his mouth rather than chase him among the allomothers legs. As SOON as he removed the nipple from Phabeni's mouth, the little booger grabbed Liversons hand and pulled it to him. I think he doesn't want to be given his bottles, I think he wants to take them. And I think he like a bit of a game😆 I was also speculating on the diarrhea thing at around 4 months (according to your update). I do believe by the time the orphans have aged up to 4 months-ish they have met with their adoptive mothers. I wonder if part of the diarrhea is emotional stress/turmoil because they now know there's a herd waiting for them, a mother, and they just want to be with them. They want 'Mother's Milk' even if there is none. I know my son used to get the back door trots any time he was feeling particularly stressed. I'm also wondering when the infants gut biome kicks in on their own without much assistance from eating 'shit shakes' or droppings from the older elephants? Could that 4 month mark be a shift in their digestive maturity?

I would imagine it is very hard to go home at night. Adine and the Carers are all so devoted to the elephant and HERD. Phabeni is just a little spinning top...so funny to see him all tuckered out and sleepy. Adine gets right down in the hay with him. Little Spotty and Lammie are such a good companions.
