Just tried this method tonight and it worked! All had males attached to them so I know thew were mated. I’m glad I stumbled upon this video!

@riverrat31014 жыл бұрын
i use a black light too and just last night i caught 9 tetramorium immigrans queens. here in usa, mid-june is also the time of year to catch acorn ant queens. both these species fly between 2 am and daylight, so you have to be up pretty late to catch them. or should i say, pretty early.

Nice! Yeah, I will definitely be out in the mornings here soon. Still not quite warm enough in the mornings in my opinion for large flights, but small ones have been happening

How many of these ended up being fertile since you weren’t able to visualize them mating and they still had their wings?
@baksbackyard2 жыл бұрын
Around 40% ended up being fertile, I think I gave away 5 or 6 queens with workers from this batch and a couple that just had larvae/pupae that I was fairly confident were viable

Is a black light the same as a UV light
@baksbackyard3 жыл бұрын
Yes, a blacklight for ants should emit between 420nm-490nm wavelengths of light which is in the UV spectrum

awesome video! how many of these queens were fertile?
@baksbackyard4 жыл бұрын
5 of the queens have laid so far!
@ideali5t4 жыл бұрын
Hey....how do I determine if it's a male or a female? Should I just catch, wait, then release if it doesn't lay?
@cozicrafting21094 жыл бұрын
Idealist If it is a male, then the antennae will not have an elbow curve, but will be strait. Also, males have really small heads and pointy gasters.

queens will be much bigger
