Night Tour of SHIMBASHI, Tokyo

Shimbashi is an area in south-east Tokyo with a major station, bars & restaurants. Take a walk around Shimbashi, Shiodome & Ginza with me at night and see what there is!
Shinbashi is popular with Jpaanese salary-men in the evening as a place to go out. I found it a convenient area to stay in Tokyo, with a well-connected station on the Yamanote Line. You can easily walk to Shiodome and Ginza, and it's close to Tokyo Station for the shinkansen. In the video you can see some of the food and places to eat, hotels, a small shrine, a vending machine restaurant, designer shops in Ginza and the beautiful winter illuminations at Caretta shopping mall in Shiodome.

Hope you can catch some illuminations! There are some amazing-looking ones outside of Tokyo - on this trip we'd spent enough time on the train to want to do another long journey after going to Hokkaido and back!

I was just in Shimbashi today on my way to Odaiba. My first time in Japan and I love it! The scale and magnitude of Tokyo is hard to describe to anyone. For me I would say 40 Seattle's as that is where I live. Will definitely come back.

Thanks, glad you found my videos helpful! ☺️ For otakus I'd recommend Osaka, especially Denden Town! It's a modern, busy city, whereas Kyoto is historic and beautiful. But they're only 15 - 30 mins apart on the train, so you can easily visit them both! I'd probably say stay in Osaka because everything's open later. Enjoy your Japlanning!!

I stayed at the Hibiya City Hotel. There are quite a few restaurants around (look on Google Maps!). I enjoyed Osaka Okonomiyaki Tomokunchi (okonomiyaki - my fav!) and Kyushu Jangara in Ginza - mainly for the vegetarian ramen but Phil enjoyed the regular meat ramen too. Quirky little place (you might have to queue to get in - that's always a sign that it's good!)

..The intro of this video is funny..😁 I can't believe tattoos are still considered taboo in Japan given the beauty and uniqueness of their style and designs, anyway it's still better to have it as an underground subculture rather than a mainstream one, although it would be a hassle if you got one.. ..I see a lot of girly bars ( maybe? ) as well..😘

I think you're right about the girly bars! Yes - I think it must be obvious who's yakuza and who just has tattoos... but as an outsider I guess it's part of the culture we can't fully understand.

You could definitely rent a room by yourself, no problem about that (I'm sure lots of people do that!) but I don't think there are shared rooms for random people. I don't know if it's true but I heard sometimes drunk people will wander into different rooms sometimes...?! :-)

Great video! :) Questions. I’ll be traveling to Tokyo/Osaka in May with my GF. We tend to prioritize food/drinks/nightlife over sightseeing so we are trying to base ourselves in areas that are the liveliest and stays open the latest. If you subtract travel days, we will have 9 full days to enjoy Japan. We will be splitting our trip into 3 day chunks. 3 days in Tokyo, 3 days in Osaka and back to Tokyo for the remaining 3 days. Our home base for the first leg of our trip will be in Shibuya. For the last leg of our trip in Tokyo, we are thinking about either staying in Shinjuku or around the Ginza/Shimbashi area. Since Shinjuku is so close to Shibuya (on the west side), would you even recommend staying in both areas on one trip? Just a side not: We do plan on doing some things on the East Side like DisneySea, Odaiba, Tsukiji, etc so Ginza/Shimbashi would make those trips more convenient but convenience isn’t the most important thing to me because of how easy it is to get around Tokyo. With that said, Is Shimbashi a good alternative to Shinjuku for nightlife? How would you split up the trip? Thanks!

If you like lively areas, you'll love Shinjuku. There's so much going on and I'd say it's the largest, liveliest area. Lots of arcades, bars, restaurants, shops, etc. My fav place to stay! I'd definitely stay there if that's what you like! Shibuya is a similar vibe but on a smaller scale. There's a lot going on around the station/crossing area but it fades off away from that. I'd say the size of Shinjuku is like several Shibuyas. It's like Times Square on every corner. Most places in Tokyo are open late, and nowhere central really feels like you're "out in the sticks". However Shimbashi is much more laidback than Shinjuku/Shibuya. There are lots of restaurants and bars, & you can walk to the bright lights of Ginza but I missed the arcades. Going back to Shinjuku after staying in Shimbashi felt like a bit of a shock because it was so crazy and busy! The location of Shimbashi's more convenient for Odaiba/Tsukiji, etc. Ikebukuro is also a lively place but the location's not that convenient as it's up in the corner. From Shinjuku you can get across the city on the JR Chuo line, much quicker than the metro. Hope that helps!

You should have showed the Giant Ghibli Clock located in or around the Shidome area. I remember getting off at Shidome in my first time in Tokyo and accidentally ran into that clock, I geeked out big time being a fan of Hayao Miyazakis work. Also, I have been to the Kagaya bar in Shimbashi. To say the least its entertaining and its definitely different from any bar you'll ever go to, possibly anywhere in the world. At the same time, I can also say its not a "must see" and you can definitely skip it if you have other things you rather see and do. I'm absolutely fine with crass humor and outlandish antics but I think the novelty wears off really quick and it just gets rather obnoxious. Definitely a tourist trap and a place Japanese locals would bring their foreign friends who are visiting Tokyo for the first time. Shimbashi isn't that much of an interesting area for me in Tokyo. Though, I did happen one lonely night going out to that exact bar that was above the Echo Kareoke that you featured. I met some random locals and actually headed down to do some kareoke in Echo! Ended up being a very fun night in Shimbashi. Thanks for your videos as always!

It makes sense to have a bar next to karaoke - it's a good combination! What you said about the Kagaya Bar fits with the impression I got from the videos I've seen about it - not sure if I'm brave enough to go! :-) Actually the Studio Ghibli clock was in my previous video - I hopped off the train to visit it on the way to Odaiba!

Mostly I'd only heard it for onsen. I think most hotels and capsule hotels are fine with tattoos (they probably wouldn't even know you had them necessarily).

@@cakeswithfaces Agreed, and do you know why it is there and not where it was originally? Don't you think the Apple Store in Marunouchi is perhaps closer to Shimbashi? Buy my point is, you tag your vid as 'Night Tour of Shimbashi' and should contain your vision to what is actually in Shimbashi.
