Love you guys. I’m surprised Tully isn’t included in this convo! Similar content (burned out mom finding more balance) even a mermaid metaphor. I’m a gay guy and Tully is one of my top movies; the humanity is so rich.

Such a great pick up. What a great movie that was!

Since one of you is giving it a 7.8, I'm taking that as a sign that this may be the end of the six-year Amy Adams slump. I'm buying a ticket . . .

As a non-married, non parent, I agree with Alonso for sure. I felt like it could be used for birth control at times! Not something I'm privy to and I too felt like I bet I wasn't alone.

Only interested due to two elements: Adams is always a delight. And "Can You Ever Forgive Me?" is a criminally overlooked piece of excellence, where (in my opinion) should've won the Oscar in both the Actress and Supporting Actor category. Been anticipating Heller's work ever since.

Same for A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood which pulled off the incredible trick of creating an updated Mr. Rogers lesson for adults, free of cynicism in an infinitely more cynical world. She's a fantastic director.

Along with the Nightbitch novel, there were recent books (Soldier Sailor and And Then She Fell) that covered the same territory minus the canine aspect. I don't think you have to be a father or mother to realize that being a mother is a difficult job. I'm happily not a parent and I know that. If a man doesn't know how hard it is to be a mother, it's because he doesn't want to know.

Marielle Heller is a fantastic director. I will watch anything she does.

Having neither read the novel nor paid much attention to advance word, am taking your conjoined word on this one. Hmmm....I think I might have seen this already, in A.R. Gurney's "Sylvia," yet do love both Ms. Adams and Ms. Heller, so will give it a shot. HEY! Amy Adams as Erma Bombeck. Now, there's an idea. Thanks as ever, Christy and Alonso. ❤❤❤❤

Definitely felt the don't give up on your dreams message especially as someone who wants to make a career in film but I thought the movie was fine.

My problems with the movie are the exact same as the book. It hammers the point home to an exhausting degree. It’s something that needs to be told, but I got it at the 40 minute mark. Amy Adams really holds it all together for me.

Do moms who are going through this stuff in real life want to see it in a movie or do they want to see some escapism?

I can’t wait to see it on Sunday…. I love Amy Adams. I have 4 cats, I know animals are different than kids, but they require the same love, respect, and affection as kids do.

I recommended a copy of Alonso's book to somebody at the bookstore yesterday, and she was delighted & bought it! I've also read NIGHTBITCH, which I didn't love, but I do look forward to seeing as a film. My problem was more with the annoying sentence structure the author employed (so many questions) rather than the text's central ideas, so I'm hopeful that transforming it to a visual medium might help. Generally, I prefer the books, but in this case I feel like I may prefer the film. Looking forward to it either way.

This reminded me of that Marianna Palka movie "Bitch" from 2017, which had an identical premise and was also not very good.
@RykComerford9 күн бұрын
Beat me to it. Marianna Palka's movie came out years before Rachel Yoder's book this movie is based on. Can't help but wonder if someone borrowed/stole an idea.

Is this a remake? I remember another movie about a mom turning into a dog? But I could not remember the specific title. This is not on top of my list, but I might catch this…

Read the book instead. The book is far grittier, far more surreal, and far more complex. The book is far, far better.
@tlovehater6 күн бұрын
I might actually do that, I usually either read the book or watch the movie, almost never both.
@patrickkevin18699 күн бұрын
The essence of the novel is definitely in this film. The pain Adams character holds at not being able to express herself as an artist and the sacrifice that Mothers/caregivers make to raise children then being turned on its head by this real (or metaphorical) metamorphosis is what make it worth a watch. Plus it’s fabulously hilarious at times, the audience I saw it with ate it up 🤍

Saw this film a couple months back at a festival, I dislike being too harsh, but I’m sorry, this was probably the worst film I saw this year.

I'm with you on this Christy, I saw this at a festival and this novel by Rachel Yoder was considered an unfilmable book and Marielle Heller has officially delivered the proof.

Alonso tried his best to talk up this movie, but I think Christy's number was pretty on spot...get it....see spot run, just not to see this movie! Ha!

Terrible. Cliched sentiment repeated over and over about a woman's career being stunted by motherhood. I wouldn't mind if it was wrapped around an interesting story, but there's hardly a storyline. Christy is a mom, not Alonso, so listen to her 😉
