For everyone saying it's not sad, this songs about a girl who's dad is cheating on her mom, her mom is an alcoholic and her brother is addicted to marijuana but her family has to pretend everything's perfect. If you're a fan of Melanie Martinez, you'll know all of her songs tell the story of s girl named crybaby and her seriously fucked up life. Eventually, her mom murders her dad, crybaby is kidnapped, she poisons her kidnapper with milk and cookies, she watches loads of plastic surgery which totally messes up her brain and turns her into a psychopath and then she realises she's insane. So yea..... Not sad (or insanely creepy) at all!!

So, interesting story. I first heard this version before I heard the original, and since the video doesn't have any visuals, my interpretation of the lyrics was actually way different. Instead of the dolls singing to the little girl, I thought it was the other way around; and surprisingly the song still works this way. The little girl is mad at her family because they're constantly arguing (which is what goes down in the kitchen) about her father's infidelity and her brother's drug addiction; which causes her to try to escape from this by going somewhere quiet (the attic) and playing with her dolls. The song is her venting out to those dolls while pretending to be fine when her parents aknowledge her.

The dolls are a metaphor for the family. The dollhouse is the family's house. When the girl looks away, they start playing for real, which is a metaphor for showing their true faces: the son was smoking cannabis, the father was sleeping with someone else instead of their mother, and the mother was alcoholic, I believe, since 'mom, wake up, dad's with a slut' but she doesn't react. The family also treats the girl like none of this is happening, since: 'Pictures, pictures, smile for the pictures, pose with your brother, won't you be a good sister?' The girl sees things that nobody else sees (what her family does), and the kitchen is basically the house/family/etc.

This creepily captures my feelings when my parent was an alcoholic. My family was messed up and i had to care for my sibling, while being terrified my parent would not survive. I find this as a perfect song for Five Nights At Freddys! Like the story would be like: "Places, places get in your places" Can be when the night is over and they are going back to their original spot. "I see things that nobody else sees" Is the night guard talking about his hallucinations. "Open the walls, play with your Dolls" Can be when they are opening the place and use the animatronics. "When you walk away, is when we really play" Can be when the place turns to night, they start moving. "Don't let them see what goes down in the kitchen" is where Golden Freddy hides. "Everyone thinks that were perfect" All the kids think that the animatronics are innocent and harmless. "Please don't let them look through the curtains" Foxy, hiding behind stage after the bite of 87. "well be a perfect family" When they stuff the night guard in the suit and makes him 'join them'.

This is how i found out about melanie. I was listening to a playlist of a bunch of nightcore songs that nightcore reality did and this one came up. (btw this happened when i was in 5th grade im in 7th now) and i really liked it, so the next day i went to school and in class i was singing it, and my friend next to me was like, "Hey, you like melanie martinez?" I said "Hmm? i dont know, i just know this song, is that the person who made it?" and she said yeah. I then told her that i really loved that song, so she suggested me to listen to sippy cup next and i did. From that point on i started to not just like melanie and her music, but the love it! i looked up her album listened to it, and look melanie up and learned more about her. Today i am like one of her biggest fans, i know all her songs, basically ever unrealsed song, and i went to her concert in October. I cried my heart out just knowing that i actually got to see and hear her live. I love melanie soooo much, and looking back at this is just so weird lol. I went from knowing nothing to everything.

This is my interpretation of the song. It's like Toy Story if it was dark, morbid movie. The little boy/girl comes out & plays with their toys in this situation with dolls. The boy/girl start to create this ideal family where everything is "perfect." To put this part in real life prespective: It's like those people & families who act really proper on the outside. They have this "perfect" image that people admire because of how great & ordered they make it seem like their lives are going, as if they encounter no problems. Getting back into the Toy Story aspect of this; "When you leave that's when we REALLY play." The boy/girl stops playing with their dolls & so the objects transform/come to life and starts doing things that the child wouldn't approve of. For instance Buzz lightyear starts doing drugs and Ken sleeps with other girls besides Barbie which in turn, turns Barbie into an alcoholic. It's a facade. In the public eye the family seems appealing but once they're behind closed doors they get into all sorts of detrimental things. More so I think it's to communicate how we shouldn't envy other people's lives. People do so on a daily basis & off of limited observation come to terms that someone else has it better than them and how they would switch lives in an instant if they could. I think this song is telling us to be careful and weary of becoming too envious of things we don't fully understand. I feel like the person who is singing, is singing from the child's POV. The child sees what's going on & is unhappy so she begins to build her/his idea of a "perfect" family which inclines them to play with their dolls to get a gripe of something they don't have.

+Gangabamba It's more about how children have very little control over family life, and that when things spiral out of control or when the parents are horrible/full of shit that the child has no one to talk to and ends up coping with various defence mechanisms. In this case the singer's character is equating being a doll with pretending to be nice all the time and that she is living a perfect life - just like a child playing with dolls or figures would do, as after all they act out their fantasies and very few people have personal problems in their fantasies. In the end the song is about how children suffer and can be emotionally damaged by troubled homes. I have some personal experience with this as my birth mother is a narcissist and has no doubt caused immeasurable mental scarring to myself and my 3 siblings.

When you think about it this song is about a schizophrenic girl with a cheating father, alcoholic mother, and a drug abusing brother. The family acts perfect for the crowd but in reality it's all going to hell. Her parents are constantly fighting, her brother takes drugs to avoid it, and she is seeing things that she likes to call dolls.
