We've arrived in Naples for the first time and off to a very bad start. We were scammed the moment we arrived by a taxi driver. Taxi driver scams are common throughout the world, we just didn't expect it in Italy on our very first day. It left us with a very bad first impression of Naples, Italy.
We continue the video and try to put the bad beginning behind us by exploring the city.
We walk around the city and right away enjoy the vibe. It's a little gritty but also pretty, there are lots of people and lots of good food. We walk down Christmas alley which has Christmas items for sale all year long
To cheer ourselves up we stop to get an Aperol spritz right on the street that you can take away.
We walk around some more and because it's so hot we stop for an iced coffee to cool down on one of the main pedestrian streets Via Benedetto Croce.
Our very cute apartment that we rented is very near so we do a tour of the one bedroom loft.
Book the apartment here: www.booking.co...
Lastly we head out again to get a bite to eat. We were just in Sicily which is famous for Arancini, and Naples has a similar street food but instead it's fried pasta called frittatina, we found it at a place called Passione di Sofi.
Afterwards we head to Piazza Bellini where you'll find lots of people hanging out and some old ruins.

I’ve visited all of Italy many times but this summer I had a few days before my flight out of Rome and after staying on an island in the Bay of Naples, I decided to spend 3 days and 2 nights in Napoli. Hands down one of the best cities I’ve ever been to. The city is 100% unscripted and raw. By that I mean, other cities have big budgets and corporate sponsors to make the place pretty, or host events, or create a downtown or tourist center and pretty little attractions for tourists to feel comfortable spending their money. Napoli has none of that. Only its pure and holistically natural and real raw beauty. Behind the grime, decaying facades and graffitied up walls, you can see the beauty and opulence this city once had dating back 100’s of years. Some cities will build buildings and settings to emulate the past architecture and craftsmanship but often time it feels a bit phony. Napoli is the real deal. You will experience unimaginable and unspoiled beauty, next to deteriorating infrastructure, next to a hipster bar, followed by terrible smells and uncollected garbage, young kids riding scooters, old timers chilling in the piazza, some of the best foods you’ll ever have, high end Michelin star restaurants, an awesome marina with mega yachts, hotels that turn-of-the-century heads of states slept in. Some streets are beautifully paved while others have gaping holes and no plan or ever being repaired. Napoli city has many sections that are all interconnected. The quartieiri spagnolo is old and super run down but full of life and energy, old Napoli has the grit, grime and teeming with awesome locals looking for you to try their homemade wine and mozzarella and to stay for dinner. Chaia is a beautiful section with tons of high end shopping where you’d think you’re in Paris. Napoli is a mixed bag of realness and yes if you find yourself by the train station something could happen to you (stay away from that area if you can). Napoli is a city that the country of Italy, corporations, media, influencers have all turned their backs on. Media and some people will post how terrible the city is and they will compare it to a 3rd world country. It’s far from 3rd world. This was a New York City, London, etc of its day. It’s a beautiful city with thousands of years of history that has been neglected. Some people say that Napoli should be “cleaned it up” and turned into a Disney Land…..i say no way….Napoli is wonderful just the way it is. I personally wouldn’t change a thing. It’s not a place for the feeble minded or for those who are afraid to venture outside of your comfort zone. Napoli isn’t a tourist attraction with cute mascots running around. One of a few cities left that hasn’t been bought and cheaply manufactured for tourist dollars

One way to avoid getting scammed by taxis is if you know how much the price should be, negotiate beforehand with the driver (& record on your phone in case he tries to extort you later). Don't count on the meter always being accurate.

I ran into a similar scam a few weeks ago in Munich. My sister and I were following the route on our phones and knew the second he took a wrong turn. We asked where he was going and he said ‘no problem, this is the way!’ At the next red light we got out and walked away. He was clearly driving us around the city in the wrong direction. A few choice words may have been used as well.

Thank you for making a fun video and for understanding the edginess of the town, its definitely not for everybody! I m British and i dont like bloggers dumping on Naples, we have to remember we are guests. I think the reason Naples is safe is because there is a big presence of Mafia spies, and also Tourist Police. There are repercussions for locals who cause trouble to tourists. A handy tip not to get scammed is to agree the price before the trip and then to TAKE A PHOTOGRAPH of the registration plate. I m a 63 yr old lady, i travel alone and i ve learnt everything the hard way!

Hi guys! That red object you saw on the stalls of Via San Gregorio Armeno is called "cornicell" or "horn". It is a lucky talisman. It descends from ancient traditions that were based on the male phallus as a symbol of fertility and consequently of luck. However, Naples is rich in history and a single day is not enough.

Oh no! That’s terrible! We got scammed this year too in a different way in Valencia, Spain. Super friendly taxi driver (also!) and offered to change a 50Euro bill... we didn’t notice that he gave us, as change, a ripped 20Euro bill (with the numbers ripped off) and in Spain, no one will accept a ripped bill, not even a regular banks especially when numbers aren’t there. Lucky us, we were heading to Barcelona, where the only place that could fix the issue was in the Bank of Spain, where you can’t just go to the cashier, but you needed an appt. So lucky that we got an appt the same day and got our 20Euro back! 😅 lesson learned for us, to check all change we are given back!

Sorry guys, but this video is really nonsense, as this situation may happen everywhere. Of course that's not nice but to make just a video on this with such a title only to get some more views, knowing that only from a personal experience you may give a bad and wrong opinion about a place to a lot of people that's really wrong. Next time try asking how much this will cost you or an approximate fare while entering the Taxi. If you go to a place with a wrong opinion, please pay attention and act clever and try to have a positive attitude otherwise you will only attract shits on you. Just to make things clear, I am not Neapolitan, was several times there and did not experience any "scam" overthere or at least not more than any other place I did visit. Just tired of catchy titles which give a bad/wrong/, offensive idea and only meant to get some more views!😑

As you said, a ride to the center should have cost around €15.

In Naples live some of the best artist of scam. It is "famous" for that! 🙂 Once in Cairo the taxi driver convinced me to rent a flat he knew about near the airport.... He kept driving around that same suburb where the flat was until I gave up to his insistent request. It was late at night and me and my friend had just landed in Egypt with our two mountain bikes with big bags. We tied them on the taxi roof and another adventure was about to began. We finished in that spacious,( it must have had 5 or six rooms), and sparsely refurbished apartment. In India I have always paid the local people tariffs for everything (perché sono italinoooo 😁 From Turin in Piedmont...

Were you taken advantage of for 10 euros/dollars, maybe, yes, maybe. Was it a nightmare? NIGHTMARE FIRST DAY IN NAPLES Italy. IS IT SAFE? Your words... But you were enjoying the city, you loved your spritz; the architecture was cool; you were happy with your room and the air con and it was bright and you said it was affordable. Piazza Bellini was pretty cool - your words..... The city felt pretty safe to you for one day's trip. Talking about the scam as an isolated incident and making a 'nightmare' out of the headline of your utube post are too different things. I love Canadians y'all but this is quite misleading. Some may say your caption was 'click bait'. Some may say you 'scammed us'. 'Is Naples, Italy safe?' as a caption would still have attracted viewers and kept you honest. Thanks guys.

So sad to hear you got scammed! But in Italy we say that those who go to Naples cry twice: when they arrive and when they leave. That means that many outsiders experience unpleasant things when they first arrive, but later on as you get to know the city and its people you are going to feel very sad when you have to leave. So hopefully the rest of your stay will make up for the bad start! Fun fact: in a 14th century italian literary work titled "Decameron" one can read a tale about a merchant from Perugia who comes for the first time to Naples for business, but ends up getting scammed BADLY...I guess certain things never change :) Now about the red sort of chili-like trinkets you saw on the streets: they are good luck charms, they originate from ancient roman amulets which were actually...penis shaped amulets! They symbolized fertility and hence, in an agricultural society, good luck. However, with the coming of christianity and the changing of morals, these amulets were changed into these chili-thingies that you can see today. So yes, the place is full of lowkey penis amulets! :) Enjoy your trip and thanks for bringing us the videos!

I don't get it. You guys sound happy about what you have seen and still you decided to go for a quite "aggressive" title for the video. Il looks to me a kind of eye-catching title just to capture people's attention playing on a cliche that we, as Neapolitans, fight every day. I find it quite offensive.

I speak Italian, my mom is from Lisbon and dad was from Marseille and also speak fluent Portuguese, Spanish and French. Thanks for the tip! Cuzz no taxi dude is gonna scam me! So sorry this happened. As fascinating as Naples can be, it does have a reputation for things like this not saying it can't happen in other cities. I'm not sure if it happens much anymore but there used to be some incidents called " 'a scippa" which means " the grab or snatch" in the dialect, a guy on a moped would drive by and snatch your purse if you were off gard and not wearing it safely. It depends on when and where you are in certain areas. When I would take the train to nearby Palermo from the small town my family is from, my relatives would use an expression "open your eyes " in the city which means keep your eyes peeled for possible thieves. Over all, I still feel safer in major Italian cities than in I do in many major American cities unfortunately.

Naples is insane. When I was a merchant seaman I was in the military sealift command’s Mediterranean pre-positioning squadron during the late ‘80s, the Gulf War, and then afterwards for a period. Naples was the only place we regularly visited where you get drunk taxi cab drivers who expect you to buy them another drink before taking you where you want to go. But this one elderly guy could obviously function driving while somewhat intoxicated so we figured “what the hell, if we can steer ships after a few belts why shouldn’t he be able to drive a car”? So we indulged him and just put up with it. After all, we were even more intoxicated than he was.

it is not a scam, just common knowledge that anywhere in the world taxi will overcharge you. You can either accept it because of the convenience of taking a taxi, or find an alternative. Metro in Napoli is only 1,30€...Airport and stations are the most expensive places to grab a taxi. Just ask before how much it will cost and expect to pay more than normal. If you accept to overpay enter the car, if not walk

My wife and I almost fell for the taxi scam in Rome, in 2015. We got off the train at Termini and were approached and asked if we needed a taxi and I said sure. As we were walking to the non taxi black sedan, I just happened to see several people standing in line at the cab stand. I quickly said no thank you and headed for the cab stand, where the taxi driver charged a fair price. I have heard taxi scam stories where you are taken to the middle of no where and had to give the driver everything you have or get out of the car.

Research the taxi regulations and pricing structure so that you know what to expect. Pre-book if possible or call a taxi (Operator will help you if you don't speak Italian). I use Taxi Napoli. If you need a ride from the airport to your hotel, don't use the airport taxi stand if possible. In my opinion, you stand a higher chance of being treated as a tourist. Pre-book and you'll know the price ahead of time and the driver will meet you outside of customs. Italians are extremely friendly but it's a business. If you plan to stay in Naples and find a driver that you like, ask for their number. Tipping is not the norm. If you plan to use the service again or visit the establishment again, then a little tip will go a long way. Enjoy your adventures.

Also while drinking Aperol all of sudden somebody dressed like a hare krishna appeared out of nowhere on the main street 🤔. Weird moments. You may also have noticed similarities between Naples and Catania in that pavements in both cities are often black, made of lavic stones, whose materials come from their respective volcanoes, Vesuvio and Etna.

We spent a month in Italy based out of Bologna and travelled by Frecciarossa to Napoli. We typically take Uber, but as you pointed out, that was not an option. Once we met our taxi driver at the train station, we gave him the address of our hotel and immediately asked about the fare before we entered the taxi. He asked whether we wanted a flat rate or metered. We agreed on a flat rate thinking if we chose the metered rate he would simply drive us in circles. It was still higher than it should have been, especially since the return trip back to the station was much lower, but at least we knew in advance.

I recall in Amman Jordan (in 1986) negotiating an exact price fare with a taxi driver going from downtown Amman to an airport hotel 20 minutes away for my wife and myself. I never take a taxi without knowing the approximate fare ahead of time. At the destination I gave him $20 in dinars for the negotiated $5 trip. He said there was no change to give me. I asked him why since we should get back $15. He said $5 was what he charged for a daytime trip and he charged $20 at night. Since it was nighttime when we got into his cab (and when we negotiated the price) he said the pre-negotiated price did not apply. Grrrr!

New to your channel, I’m enjoying your posts. Way back in 2004 I was in Italy with my Mom and we were heading inland on Sicily to visit my Great Grandfather’s gravesite in Agira. We got to the closest town with accommodation being Enna. It’s a hilltop city and once we got there we got off the bus (from Palermo) at the bottom of the hill. A man came by in a car and offered us a ride up. This was his business, a driver. It took less than two minutes to drive us to the top and his fee seemed ridiculous for the short drive. We paid it and chalked it up to us being easy targets. The next morning we asked the hotel concierge for recommendations on how to get to Agira and he had “just the guy”. It turned out to be the same guy from the day before! We had already mentioned how we got ripped off the day before to the concierge. So when he discovered, this was the fellow that did that, he said something to him he negotiated a rate to Agira. We ended up having a great visit to the war cemetery that day. And we learned a lesson!

Literally just got to Naples….. Train station taxi…. Supposed to be 15 minute journey (4 miles), they say 30€ … sheet on back says half of that but I thought whatever…. I usually tip them anyway and I’m tired. The guy literally takes me to the complete other end of the town! Even though I tell him several times no wrong way! He kept smiling in his mirror at me aswell ‘oh no it’s fine’ Get him to eventually pull over by physically opening the door at 30 mph. Take my luggage out the back seat from the boot, get out the car and he comes up to my face….. I’m a good guy but I throttled him and slammed him onto his bonnet, dished out a couple right hands and he was bleeding everywhere (for my safety) some locals come and break it up, police come and all put me in the back of my car for my safety, the police after asking me questions let me go and say ‘we are sorry about that’ They know how the taxi drivers are scumbags, the taxi driver before the police come was even offering to take me to where I wanted to go for €40!! I begrudgingly had to pay him €25 For him taking me an hour away from my destination… why was he taking me out the city… really suspect….. Then had to take 2 trains and a bus to get to my destination. This has happened in other Italian cities too.

Hi Guys what a lovely video ! surely a part of the taxi scam it seems you enjoyed Napoli! It s a unique city difficult to compare it with other cities in Italy ! I am from North Italy but for work reasons in the 90's I moved to Napoli and ended up living there for 7 years. I fell in love with this city. and still I am in love even though live in London now., Bur i go occasionally to visit good friends there. About the scam things yes it used to happen quiet often when i used to live there ( to me in 7 years only once but then nothing at all ) but now not that much even though it can still happen of course if you are not careful. Taxi I never took one because of the same reason that happen to you. From Capo di chino airport alway always get a bus to take you central Napoli , easy and cheap. For the rest of course as any busy city , mind the occasional pick pockets ( it happens in London too ) but otherwise Napoli is an intense city like a living theatre full of things happening, to explore, it s smells, colours, noise, people, food, liveliness, architecture, exaggerated curious interaction and manners, and a sense of pride for Napolitans, etc. Basically it s a city which surely won t pass as boring. it s a feast for your eyes. I strongly recommend visiting Napoli and the surrounding coast like Sorrento, Amalfi, Positano, Capri, Ischia, Ponza etc. The is a famous Napolitan quote saying: SEE NAPOLI THEN DIE ( because of its overall uniqueness and beauty ) I still miss it a lot sometimes.

Naples is a big city and there are lots of surrounding towns that blend in so much, you don't even realize when you cross the city borders into the neighboring towns. The taxis when they cross those borders can legitimately double the fare, even though the trip can be just of a few minutes, then they can also add night, Sunday and/or holiday differentials legitimately, making even a small trip very expensive. Unfortunately the customers are not aware of these regulations and the taxi meters only indicate the basic fare., on top of that then you get the ones that scam the customers, in many cases it would be cheaper to rent a car if you are spending a few days in Naples, i.e. if you don't mind putting up with the heavy traffic.

I also got scammed by a "taxi" back in June. I thought I knew who the legit taxis would be based on an article I read. When I landed at the airport I was so tired and I just wanted to get my Airbnb. I asked the first "taxi" driver that approached me at the airport how much it would be and I think he told me 50 Euros. At the point I knew it was expensive but I did not care, I just wanted to get to my Airbnb. When I got to my Airbnb he then changed the price by a significant increase. I was pissed but just paid it because I felt like what else was I to do. Needless to say, when I was leaving and got a taxi back to the airport, I made sure I got a legit taxi. Literally my taxi was only 15 Euros going back to the airport which was the same distance just with a legit taxi service. I kept the phone number for that taxi company so I have it for next time. I will not get scammed again!

Naples is TERRIBLE when it comes to getting around. At the airport the tourism counter says they have flat rates from the airport to downtown/cruise port. The agent said pay no more than 10 Euro. We get to the taxi stand and they want 50 Euro. We argue ... argue ... its stressful and intense. My wife and I in a sea of aggressive taxi drivers. Finally, they agree on 30 Euros ... 20 over the flat fee. They keep trying to put our bags in the car. Finally, we getting the cab and this guy acts pissed off and drives like a crazy person. Same thing to our hotel from the cruise port. The hotel says on the phone, don't pay more than 15 (even though it should be 7). Loud, scary, aggressive negotiating and finally we agree on 20. The Naples tourism board should know we ... and it sounds like you ... will NEVER come back to Naples again because from the first second in the country, its scamming and stress. No thanks. Until they work on their taxi drivers' system of scamming, we will NEVER go back to that city. Too stressful.

You got in a taxi that was in a line up of taxis as I’m sure you were in a line up of people waiting to take said taxis. You didn’t ask for a firm price. You chose to take a taxi vs public transit or walking the 30 minutes and you paid what you paid. If you are delightfully traveling from country to country and city to city and using taxis surely you have a slush fund for your transportation costs. You paid more than you thought you should have based on a comparison that was solely in your head. The negotiated 20 Euros plus tip you paid to not have to walk seems fair. 🤷‍♀️

I'm not sure this was a scam, and taht is why. Few days ago I was in Naples area, the last night we've slept close to the airport (exactly 9 minutes drive distance) and for being sure I reach out to the hotel asking how much a taxi to the airport would cost... I was told 35€. We ended up prolonging the car rental, since it was much easier, more comfortable and less expensive. Unfortunately in Italy taxies fares from airports and train stations are built up starting from fixed costs building blocks (e.g. 15 € if you are picked or dropped at the station or 25 € if you're picked or dropped at the airport). Now, I believe that a definitive answer can be given by someone living in Naples, knowing the local taxi fares system.
