Fabulous work, as a always. You are far too humble. A technical note: The infantryman's rank insignia (if he's a technical sergeant, now known as a sergeant first class) should be three chevrons and two rockers, if a staff sergeant, three chevrons and one rocker. There is no device of any kind in the space between the bottom chevron and the top rocker. The patch on the figure appears to have something in that space that should be blank and it makes it look like there are four chevrons. (It also makes it look like there are two rockers, but one or two rockers are OK). Also, you've indicated you're not through with them, but they will need dirt, grease stains, water stains, and other marks on their clothing and also dirt on their hands and faces. Soldiers get into a remarkable number of substances that make them dirty in nearly uncountable ways. (Ask me how I know.) But I must repeat: fabulous work. You are a genius. With more experience I will be surprised that your figures aren't walking around and chatting with each other.

Uncle Night Shift: I am not good at miniature painting! Everyone in the comments: You are great at miniature painting! Nice job with them, they look really nice and I was about to try that first black then white on highlighted parts before applying thin basecoat, but I think I will go for this approach presented by you. Would really like to see you make some WH40K miniatures, for example new Heavy Intercessors or Aggressors (or go old school with some Terminators), which are basically little walking tanks, and I think their armor can't really chip and rust, but who cares? A more military approach would be interesting to see with all those effects (although I am in love with my reddish brown painted Blood Ravens).

Just as a collector of these things, and a fellow modeller: the jacket color of the waving infantryman is way outside the range of the OD7 green introduced with that uniform. Even faded it won't hit those tones. But it's a great example of the many shade variations the earlier uniforms in OD2 could come out of the manufacturers and/or fade to. Stellar work as always though, I know figs aren't easy. Dad made me cut my teeth on them early so I wouldn't have reservations about doing them later after nothing but AFV's, light vehicles, and planes.

Here are some awesome links to items about US Uniforms (and equipment) by one of the vendors we get reproductions from (working from his extensive originals collection). He also worked around 2015 with research done by members of the 100th Infantry Division Reenactment group on the US East Coast who, through their research (at the US Quartermaster's Corps Museum, and other archives) got access to spec documents and original preserved swatches that completely turned the arguments of what color the M1941 Field Jacket was on it's head as we learned they were what was termed "Olive Drab #2" (OD2) rather than the previously thought "khaki" or other OD shades (there truly were 50 Shades of Olive Drab between vehicle paints, equipment paints, and uniform/equipment dyes), of course between variation in manufacturer's processes and fading and staining from use the colors will shift considerably (and you'll see many examples items in a entire palette of shades of the "same color"). Things for your research collection! Part of the research findings into the M1941 Field Jacket's true specified color are given here: www.90thidpg.us/Equipment/Reviews/ATFM412015/index.html His argument way back when against "everything US was khaki," except the US Army did use a khaki color, which is what we think of when someone says "khaki." www.atthefront.com/category-s/471.htm HBT Uniforms (like the coveralls the tank crewman is wearing), nominally the greener OD7, but also a huge shade variation. blog.atthefront.com/wwii-army-hbt-uniforms/ The 1943 Field Jacket (like the infantryman is wearing) blog.atthefront.com/the-field-jacket/ US Rank Insignia (first is an example of 1930's brown wool felt cutouts stitched onto black/navy wool felt backings, these were rarely worn, what follows is a photo of the later version which included embroidered insignia on wool felt, embroidered insignia on rayon twill, and rayon embroidered insignia on rayon twill which is the lightest of the group in color, also includes the pre-1942 First Sergeant insignia before the rank was moved up a grade on the pay scale) www.flyingtigerantiques.com/mm5/graphics/00000001/sgtstrpolvwool30sobv_540x595.jpg i.pinimg.com/originals/48/08/78/480878f07a6a13882598d501c4fe2c39.jpg Happy painting! I'm going to disagree with you about this not being a tutorial as I have to say this is the best tutorial on KZbin for painting small figures...blows all the "pros" away. I am in the process of painting some 1/35 US tank figures (bravo6 brand) from the movie Fury with Brad Pitt. Now I've watched a lot of figure painting tutorials over the past few days (as I've never painted a figure this small) n most just look like they are way over painting, even the "pros"...these figures r sooo small so I figure (haha) less is more right. Again your info is second to none, it's so informative. Your video format is perfect and so clear n crisp. Perfectly shot. I am going to watch this over n over the next few days. Thank you so much for the time n effort you have put into this video...the best tutorial out there.

Excellent work, sir! A couple of observations from someone who knows nothing about painting figures, but who is fairly well versed in weaponry and field gear. The M1 Garand rifle which your GI is carrying, believe it or not, generally had a bit of shine on the wood stock. It is not the flat, oiled wood you'd see for instance on a German Mauser. Also, the metal parts, including the barrel, gas tube, receiver and butt-plate, are almost always worn to virtually bare metal (with subtle darkening on details) rather than the factory blackening or bluing. On the clothing, I'd consider adding some subtle highlighting to suggest wear areas at the knees, upper thighs and elbows too (take a look at your own jeans and you'll get the idea). As always, your work continues to amaze me, and thanks so much for sharing. Steve

Well done! My only recommendation would've been to swap the colors of the jackets. The GI is wearing what's called a M43 jacket which was a very dark green, and the color you ended up choosing would've been the perfect color for the two m41 field jackets on the tankers.

Amazing, as always! For the “little mistakes” you talk of, if you need to point those out to the viewers for them to see the mistakes, then you shouldn't worry to much about it. Even professional artist make little mistakes all the time, but they just acknowledge that most people will never see them and the rare ones that do probably won't be mad about it. Great Job Uncle Night Shift! One thing to note about US Infantry weapons... the phosphate coating on the metal isn't black. It's a shade of of greenish-black. Modern weapons tend to be black-er, but still have a slight green tint. I have handled several WWII era weapons that were dark OD green, like a new uniform, just... darker.

Someone who is obviously very talented with models doing something outside their wheelhouse like figures is really interesting. Plus the final result is great. Especially since I end up watching a bunch of very skilled 40k mini painters on here, so it's neat to see the different methods and approaches. Now to somehow get Night Shift to do a Baneblade in his style and I'll die happy. :P Also re: white for eyes. If you look at say a photo of a group of people realistically the amount of the whites of their eyes you see is incredibly minimal and usually gets blended down due to the surrounding colours/details. Whites for eyes can work on models but honestly I've seen 'quality' models where the whites (though technically very well done) still just made the eyes look cartoony and out of place.

Well, you did a great work! Your airbrush skill are finally very useful! Just two tips. 1- you can use the finally red wash even on the lower lip. 2- maybe not in this scale but keep in mind that soldier can't shave themselves every day. Maybe a little umber wash on the cheeks an the chin could help. 3- eyebrows, ther aren't under chemio therapy 🤞 4- round objects like button, rank and pockets cannot have the same shadow all around. Try to keep the upper shadow more thin as possible. Ok they are 4 tips but that's because I really like your work!

A whole lot better than I've been able to accomplish. When I paint a figure I try to imagine him in the real world. For example: is he new to the environment, with brand new uniform. Has he been wearing his uniform for some time, faded, dirty, tears, etc? I also believe the rank insignia is incorrect for the tankers. The commander would probably be a staff sergeant E6 The rest of the crew would be E3 or E2 unless they were new replacements, then E1. Check out the crew of "Fury." A very well-done video.

I may have made this suggestion on the last vid you did with figures, but look into Games Workshop's Contrast line of paint. They make painting non-metallic surfaces easier. My go-to mix for European skin tones is: -Base: Wraithbone [its a warm eggshell beige, any equivalent you prefer will do] -Contrast: Guilliman flesh [for tanned northern caucasian skin] or Skeleton horde [for mediterranean or other olive skintones], this should apply in a fairly consistent coat, load the brush, cover the buff/wraithbone in a single pass and don't touch it until dry. Contrasts are formulated to flow into recesses and stick to raised surfaces, kinda like a mix between a filter and pinwash -highlight: a gentle drybrush in eldar flesh dry. This is a chunky, almost pure pigment designed specifically for drybrushing -Shade: a gentle pinwash in reichlander fleshshade [a warm brown/umber, also amazing on yellow metallics like gold medals] or agrax earthshade [a darker sepia tone, also good on red metallics like brass or copper buttons]. The base and shade paints can be substituted for paints you are more comfortable with, the important ones are the contrast and dry. Guilliman flesh contrast [especially with reichlander fleshshade] is also good for those stowage bags, while skeleton horde is good for faded wood.

Excellent, I've a lot to learn😆 trouble now as I'm getting older I'm shaking more. I've had to train my breathing by holding my breath, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.

This is excellent ! Just a tip: check out Shep Paine's method of "cutting off" hands from arms method. Shep used to cut off the hands and really "wrap" fingers and hands around things being held(in this case the figurine holding the gun). After you "wrap" the fingers around the object you fit them back to the arms, you can always use putty to fit any gaps! it really looks very realistic. Hard to believe this is "beginner's" work :) !

Looking good! Now I expect to see that diorama you mentioned... haha. Btw, if you haven't done so already I highly recommend checking out Vince Venturella's channel- the guy is a figure/mini painting jedi. He does mostly brush work, but I think there's a lot of usefulness in it nonetheless if you are interested in doing more 'living' subjects. For instance, a lot of his wisdom on texture/light/surfaces/contrast is immensely helpful.

Please yes more figure painting! Your video's great amd easier to follow than other's and no joke I think thses are some of the best I've seen! That tanker you wanted to redo the jacket I think is the best one too! Just something about it I think that one! I've bought a good few from scale 75 war front resin figures! I've got a cool rommel he was hard to get! There like old power rangers trying to get a certain one lol so when rommel came in I snapped up 2!

when it comes to these blue tac alternatives, I recommend UHU patafix, it doesn't disturb the paintjob (I've tried it with s75, Army Painter, AK 3rd gen and Vallejo).

Looks great! For the diarama, I suggest placing something into Joe’s hand - a rolled map, a flat satchel, etc. the wave being the point of focus feels a bit bland. Awesome paintwork, loved it 👍
