So, the Keyboardist: Our Metal Mozart Tuomas Holopainen (founder, leader, keyboardist, songwriter and the main composer for Nightwish) Tuomas the keyboardist writes about 95% of Nightwish songs, music and lyrics. He also composes the music for the backing track they use. It is recorded in London with musicians from The London Philharmonics. Pip Williams helps with the orchestration. There are two London based choirs too on the backing track, the other one is a children's choir. And of course with a synth you can do a lot. Now the song: This song is an absolute banger 🤘😎🤘. Kai's drumming on this is just crazy ( Kai Hahto "The Human Metronome", or in my book Kai "The Machine Gun" Hahto )!!! In one interview Tuomas/Marko said that Floor has a lungs of a dolphin (That long note is 💥)!!! Plus, she holds the last note (A4) of Nightwish - Ad Astra for 17 seconds (10/6/2022 Sweden Festival). Tuomas (keys), pronounced Too-ohmas. He writes most of the music and lyrics for Nightwish. This one is a taste of Nightwish fantasy musical theater. Marko is the role of the devil/evil entity. Floor is the innocence and purity of the Lady in White/Mermaid. She was resisting Marko's amorous attempts to capture, control, and possess Floor's mermaid character who represents all that is good. She escapes his clutches to swim and live free. This is why the ending lines and music have a feel of redemption and hope.

Top 5 Nightwish performance for me. I love this one so much. Even by Floor's lofty standards, she is extra special here. Add the theatrics between her and Marko, Kai and Tuomas going absolutely ham on their instruments, and Emppu being Emppu, and this one is really special. Only negative is it's too short! I think it was cool that you picked up on mermaid vibes before even knowing the lyrics! 🧜‍♂

@@rkempo Partially agree, yes their music has evolved a lot as Tuomas's taste in music has changed, but it does not mean they have gotten better in everyone's opinion, since not all like how dramatically their music has changed. Also you do realize apart from Tuomas and Emppu all the members are different? I personally don't think this song in particular (and 2-3 other songs from this era) is even close to how good the original is, simply because the style and tone of the original does not match well with Marko and to lesser extent Floor. Marko has too pretty voice for this song, while Floor sings her part too harsly, changing the dynamic of the song and the extreme contrast it relies between the angelic vs demonic duet, which just isn't there with Floor and Marko (in some songs people often even mistake their voices since they can sing so close to each other if they want, yours is an empty hope is the most common one this happens). It is still a great song, but just not at the level and style the og version is, which a lot of og Nightwish fans rank as top 3 Nightwish songs of all time Also Emppu used to be a lot better guitarist in his early career, but had a pretty big drop during Anette era (lack of drive?), but has luckily regained most of his skill since Floor joined, but isn't quite at the level he used to be, but ofc age also factors in as well, playing guitar at that level is physically quite demanding as well. And for singers it is much worse, age and strain often has a massive detrimental effect on singers which gets worse and worse with age, not the opposite. Singers of this caliber have to go extreme lengths of vocal tuning and training not to have their voice deteriorate. Tarja is an amazing example of this and has talked in length on to what lengths she has to go to maintain her voice, and while I have never heard Floor (she is also a lot younger than Tarja) go over her routines on how she upkeeps it, her voice techniques are at such insanely high level she shouldn't have any problems with it either Just listen to singers who had a hit single career 30-40 years ago, and 75% of them can't sing for s**t anymore

For me this is one of their best performances, I guess Its every man for themselves, I respect yours, I certainly respect you lengthy detail as to why its not for you. For me this is their ultimate performance, I can't compare anything to this. With that said. Nightwish is Nightwish, I have been here 20+ years myself, I respect all the performers all the same. I just happen to like this a little more than the rest.

As others have said, Tuomas is the heart and soul of Nightwish. His songs, interpreted by this group of extremely talented musicians, make this band what it is. Tuomas is also a part of another band, called Auri. That band has a different, and lovely, sound. A good starting place for Auri might be the Official Music Video for the song "Night 13".

The Night 13 video is very cinematic and is a deep, impactful portrayal of someone coming to terms with an end to a life well lived. There is a "making of" video for how the song video was produced, which is also worth viewing. Pearl diving is a lighter entry into the Auri sound with Tuomas, Troy and Tuomas's wife Johanna.

Looks like the 2018 ‘Decades’ tour, celebrating 20 years of Nightwish, and I saw the St. Louis part of the North American tour. It featured a lot of deep cuts that they don’t play live that often, and this was a very early song. On the topic of Floor and growing, you’ll be shocked at what she can do. @@DenisBelo : Nope. The sound balance is actually better because of the size of the venue, and I'll explain why. It has to do with acoustics. A growl, being a very low-level sound, should barely be audible. Otherwise, it sounds like a fry scream (listen to Tonight We Ride by Unleash the Archers), which not only isn't a growl, but doesn't even have a lot of power behind it. This is what Wembley or Mexico City does, in terms of how Floor's growling sounds. To be completely honest, at that point, Helle Bogdanova or Angela Gossow (ex-Archenemy) sound as if they have more power to push a growl to keep the sound level consistent. But with the Nightwish Cruise, because the audience is so close to the stage, thus so close to the speakers, not only do you get a growl without nearly the amount of distortion other sounds could mix with, but the audience acts almost as a sound filter and sound insulation to get the better sound quality. And, Nightwish Cruise is also the only performance that Marko's laughing is actually in time at the end.

Great reaction! It's interesting you brought up the "Little Mermaid" vibe. Tuomas writes his songs essentially from his upbringing. As a child he was heavily influenced by Disney classics. In his video biography he returned to his childhood home where his parents still live. His parents you could argue "preserved" his childhood bedroom and it's packed with Disney memorabilia from books, videos and toys. I think many of his songs "tap" into that such as "Dark Chest of Wonders", "Storytime", "Last Ride of the Day", "Ghost River" to name a few. As he grew, he had strong interests in biology, evolution and oceanography. Many of his songs have those elements in his writing and compositions as well. Initially, Tuomas' music started out as traditional folk story telling (you can see that with Troy Donelky's (sp) contributions with the Irish Bagpipes). Storytelling is a key element in NW music. And that makes it all the more fascinating in a Symphonic Metal genre.

I think that often people have a mistaken idea of what a Mermaid is, because the Mermaids mithologically speaking are not like the "Little Mermaid", but are creatures that sing to the sailors to confuse and seduct them, and when the sailors are possesed by the songs the Mermaids eats them.

This song was created before Marko joined the band. The original recording features a male vocalist that in my opinion was very uninteresting. Floor may still be divisive to the elder fanbase, but Marko made a definite improvement.

I will add that Floor can do some serious death metal growls. Tuomas is not a big fan so only one Nightwish song does she get to use it. Yours is an Empty Hope live from Wembley is my favorite performance although Mexico City is pretty good. Floor did alot more growling in her previous band ReVamp. Another band from Finland. This song is special. it's symphonic metal. Wintersun - Sons Of Winter And Stars (TIME I Live Rehearsals At Sonic Pump Studios) REMASTER But before you listen to the song, read the lyrics. Because they're hard to hear. But they are interesting, even though they are difficult to interpret. They have a Nightwish drummer in their band :D And he gave fire here! P.S. I can tell you from experience that this is not an easy song to sing and to play. it's very long. We done it at the rehearsal and sweated :) We play covers of songs by different bands just as a hobby (nothing special.. yet) And we play at local clubs.

If the song is called Devil and the deep dark ocean, then it's not really hard to figure out that Marco is probably the devil. And since you've correctly recognized mermaid vibes, it's also not hard to guess in connection with the ocean in the title that Floor is the mermaid here. The devil falls in love with the siren, but she doesn't like him at all. That's the short version.

You can love the outfit but you can't have it. Royal Black Couture promised never to make a copy. In the original version this was unremarkable in performance, though the genius was obvious. This performance brought it up to my top 5 (joint 4 with Dead Boy's Poem from the same concert, which you will love). This one is the Devil (Marco) trying to seduce the Mermaid to his watery realm but she's not up for that at all. If you liked the vocal gymnastics here, try Slaying the Dreamer from this, the best Nightwish concert I have (33 now). The pyrotechnics Floor and Marco display are phenomenal.
