You have just been introduced to our Valkyrie queen FLOOR JANSEN. She is from The Netherlands (now living in Sweden with her family, Hannes Von Dahl, drummer from Sabaton, and their daughter Freja) She has a range out of this world and can more or less sing anything she wants to. Sadly Jukka is no longer with the band. Well he is still with the band but not as a drummer. More at the side. He sufferes from insomnia and has a bad back so he had to step down after this tour when they were making a new album. He asked his good friend Kai Hahto to fill in because he always hoped that he would come back at some point. But he coulden't so Kai became a full time member. He is also an amazing drummer.

Well you remember the band but you just experienced the 6' 1" Valkyrie Goddess of Metal, a/k/a the Dutch Siren Floor Jansen!!! This Wacken concert was one of the best LIVE performances by the band ever and that says a lot. Jukka has retired due to health reasons but is now the manager of the group. He choose Kai from Wintersun to replace (he is a beast you won't believe) and they now have Troy a Folk Metal specialist who plays 6 or 7 instruments (including bagpipes). Floor can sing anything and if you check out her solo stuff from Beste Zangers 2019, a Dutch TV show where weekly she sang different genres in different languages, each a stunning emotional roller-coaster. Welcome back to the NW ranks and I am sure the army will be here soon with all kinds of recommendations. Floor has brought back so many of the old Tarja fans and millions of new ones to the band, Tuomas says she is the last singer for this band there will be no more Nightwish without Floor.

@@SongsandThongs btw Floor was well known in Europe with her previous bands : AfterForever & ReVamp, after Tarja left, Floor was asked to replace her but was unable to say yes,so then came Anette who had a more pop style of vocals she did 2 albums,so finally in 2012 NW asked Floor to step in mid tour,she had 48hours to learn the setlist, by the time of the Wacken 2013 she perfected her interpretations of the songs and cemented her permanence in the band.

@@nicod1361 They didn't ask Floor to join after Tarja (although they'd have liked to), as they already knew she was too busy, so they auditioned for an alternative instead. in 2012, when that reached a point where it wasn't working out with Anette, they unanimously agreed that there was only one person capable of taking over the role mid-tour and on short notice (48 hours), so on 29th September they called Floor (who was at her sister Irene's wedding in The Netherlands at the time)from Salt Lake City and put it to her. Within hours, she was on a plane, met up with them late on the 30th at Salt Lake City and first sung with them the following day in Seattle on 1st October 2012 after a single run through the setlist with them. At that time, the setlist didn't include "Ghost Love Score". Floor remembered having liked the song from when she'd heard it when opening for them on four dates of a previous tour eight years earlier, so by 10th October, she had re-written the ending to better suit her vocals, to such effect that she was able to persuade them to include the new version in the setlist for Austin TX, a change which became permanent.

It's always great to watch other Nightwish fans of the old days discover Floor! 😊 While I've admired Floor since her After Forever days, I still got overwhelmed when I first heard/saw her in Nightwish for the first time. In my case, it was the 2012 Buenos Aires performance of this song. It's a performance that I find interesting for several reasons. First, Floor had been filling in for Anette for just a few weeks when it was recorded, yet delivered a superb performance of a song that wasn't written for her. The ending is something she added herself shortly after she stepped in as a temporary replacement. Second, the Argentinian crowd went nuts, but they seem to do that on a regular basis over there. 😁 And finally, the crowd was chanting Floor's name at the end of the performance. I can only imagine how tremendous that must have felt to Floor, who had recently battled a burn-out that almost ended her musical career! So, I assume that we can expect more Nightwish in this channel from now on? 😀 [Edit: Oh, and it was nice to hear some comments regarding Emppu's pinch harmonics! I've watched plenty of reactions/analyses to "Ghost Love Score" and this is the first I've seen where this has been mentioned at all!]

Emppu is one of the most tasteful and unsung guitarists out there. Over time he has pulled back on overt flashiness and focused on providing the subtle and magnificent elements that make Nightwish... well... Nightwish. The guy carries the load of both rhythm as well as those flourishes that cut through and provide the "lead" touches he is known for. And I'm right with you on Jukka on drums. One of my all-time favorites.

Welcome back to Nightwish, and welcome to Floor Jansen, our Valkyrie Goddess. While it's true that, like you, many of the original Nightwish fans turned away from the band when original singer Tarja Turunen was replaced by Annette Olzen, I've never heard of a Tarja fan who wasn't drawn back by Floor. To me, it's like this: Tarja was what the band was; Annette wasn't quite that; but Floor is what what they can be. She has no limitations, so Tuomas is free to write whatever he wants without fear of exceeding his singer's capabilities. Floor has only made two Nightwish albums so far, but unlike Annette's two albums, nobody is turning away. Floor has captured new fans, brought back the old fans, and widened the band's range and scope beyond what anyone could've imagined. I look forward to watching your reactions to Floor-era Nightwish - now that you've come back.

The funny part here: Phantom of the Opera was off their album Century Child, which was 2002. This song, Ghost Love Score, was off of "Once", which was in 2004, IIRC. That was Tarja's last studio album with the band, so Ghost Love Score is actually a Tarja song. Floor took it and made it her own. Annette came in for 2 albums: Dark Passion Play (which has The Poet and the Pendulum, Bye Bye Beautiful, and The Islander), and Imaginaerum, which was her last album. Floor came into the band mid-tour, and had to learn the entire setlist within 48 hours. In fact, there's a documentary about this that Nightwish produced, called "Please Learn the Setlist in 48 Hours". It covers that journey from that tour all the way up to this actual show. As for Jukka, he left, but didn't leave. He quit touring as an actual member of the band, due to severe insomnia. His drum tech (who was also the drummer for Wintersun), took over, and that was at Jukka's request, as he knew that Kai was the only person that could fill that role. Jukka now manages the business side of Nightwish.

I have to say that I'm a hardcore Tarja fan from the beginning because she was THE voice that made the difference to other bands in that genre back in the days. Anette was ok, ehm well .. more a kind of musical singer and not really fitting the band and the music. But don't get me wrong, she is an amazing singer! Floor is a total game changer: She glued the band together like no one before, she has the skills to perform every NW song even from the beginning and not sounding like a Tarja copy, she has her own vibes and that makes it special. Comparing Floor and Tarja is totally pointless, even if they sing the same song (there is a Ghost Love Score song by Tarja also: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j4CndIBoa6-Lhbs ). Regarding Emppu: I'm so with you Harry, especially the solo ... he has the sense and musicality to not "overshred" it. I'll politely disagree and offer my opinion that Anette fit in with the albums that were recorded with her. DPP was a bit of a struggle, but at least in the studio she did an amazing job.

@@ciflores0 I don't want to discuss this, because there are always discussions about that and people tend to compare all NW singers, and that is totally pointless. At the end it is also about personal preferences. I like Anette, she is an awesome singer, but for my personal preference, and I'm biased because I started with NW from the very first beginning, Anette was so totally out of that "normal" range NW was used to and popular for. I think it was some sort of "ignorance" from a hardcore fan and they've lost tons of "fans" that days. Don't get me wrong, this is no Anette-Bashing at all! But NW is raising fans again like hell since Floor is in the game, including me. I totally agree, Anette did an amazing job, not even in the studio. She kept the band from not drown into nothing.

"Where has this voice been all my life" - well, "After Forever" from 1997-2009, then with "ReVamp" (2009-2016) and with "Ayreon" (and "Star One") on several records/lives since 2000 - with Nightwish since october 2012. Remember that on this Wacken performance she was still new to the band and the audience, who eventually bought the tickets basically to see Nightwish with Anette Olzon. Floor replaced her in the middle of the tour and really didn't have a lot of time to learn and adapt the songs. This Wacken gig was a true turn point - not only she completely knocked down and convinced even the hard core fans, but also you can feel the motivation of the band growing from song to song with this exceptional performance. And all this under pressure - new to the band, not yet alot of experience/rehearsals with the band, an audience being here for another singer, AND the pressure of a live DVD production under all this circumstances! However, the reason he left is that he suffered from a three-year running battle with insomnia, a lot of the time only getting two or three hours of sleep a night. On the flip side, before COVID, around a year ago, he went to a few shows in Europe, and played Last Ride of the Day on the kit. How is it that there's been so many Ghost Love Score reactions and you're the only one that's mentioned Emppu's (guitarist) bit at the end there! Definitely would like to see you talk about this stuff more 'cause us non-musicians have NO idea and reaction channels like yours give us a chance to learn. Also, Ghost Love Score was originally sung by Tarja and was in the same album as Planet Hell, haha! Maybe it didn't stick out to you as much as Planet Hell did at the time. It's actually a song from Tarja's era. I love Tarja's version. But Floor added to it some versitality and very challenging vocal acrobatics at the end. :-) She said in an interview that she never wanted to sound like Anette or Tarja, she wanted to take these songs and make it her own, but still give a lot of respect to the original version. It's a very, very hard task and I think that in most cases she does the job perfectly. Her own take doesn't spoil or hurt the original versions of the songs and it's also not just a copy. She's able to add something new and personal and still not to change it too much. Very, very talented woman. And also (maybe out of topic), but she's so damn beautiful and has so great stage presence. You can't love her, I don't think it's possible. :-)

Juuka grooving on his TAMA double-base set, Emppu driving the rhythm in his signature ESP EV-1, Marco giving us epic base lines in his Warwick Buzzard, Tuomas sharing his genius on his KORGs and Floor leading the crowd like a modern-day 6-foot 1-inch Valkyrie and seducing like a siren. They are all at the top of the talent tree. Each one alone could lead a band into greatness let alone all five of them. One of the best live performances of all time. The band was created around Tarja's wonderful operatic vocal style, the combination of that and the metal music was something interesting. Tarja out, Anette in with a more pop friendly sound - not bad but just not enough it seemed to handle many of the older songs but the two records she was on (Dark Passion Play and Imaginaerum) were pretty strong. Floor came from a somewhat symphonic metal/metal background with after Forever and ReVamp, being academy trained and versed in that style made her a perfect choice for NW and they could really open the catalog and play anything they wanted. There are still tunes that Tarja (and Anette) really shined on but Floor can handle them all in her own style.

I know that many of us soldiers in the nightwish army love nightwish and respect them for who they are and what they do. The talent, composition, and max level music is worth every minute spent listening to them.
