Tarja is a lyric singer, but in this song in particular I prefer tarja, because it takes me to epico, a medieval style voice, floor is beautiful, powerful, incredible voice, but I like the lyric, the opera Rock so I prefer tarja, but floor this is great in the nightwish band, I follow both careers tarja solo band, as the nightwish band without fights or comparisons.

I think the fans cried because it's was just so overwhelming good for them, captivating. No words can really say it, but you know the feeling when something is so beautiful you can't help but cry - like 'can there be something this good'? You're said yourself this is so epic. And they knew the song very likely by heart (saw the same fans singing Phantom of the Opera) - so when you're anticipating something awesome to come, you get giddy: tears might surprise you then too. You know - 'the suspense is killing me' feeling.

Hi Jim! It#s a great song. Tarja is my favourite singer from Nightwish too because she has that more operatic sounding voice which was there signature when they started. The person who replaced her Annette, had a nice voice but it was too poppy and different the voice range required for Nightwish. Floor Jansen was a real find she also has a great voice and with a lot of fans she is now the favourite and very much loved by the fans. Although my favourite is still Tarja I'm happy the fans have a new favourite because Tarja is a tough act to follow, when Annette was in the band everyone complained and said they preferred Tarja. With Floor they have an equal (some fans may even say better than Tarja). Anyway the fans are happy and Nightwish can carry on at full strength.

I believe also the last concert of the tour and sadly Tarja's last show. As they handed her notice that they were sacking her after the show. I'm not going into the reasons why, that's another story entirely. Let#s just say as far as the music was concerned they ended on a high.

Hi Jim...thanks a MILLION for bringing Tarja to the unwashed masses...we are not worthy!!!.... I was dragged by my girlfriend to one of her concerts in 2003 when they were on tour in Canada and was expecting something entirely different than what i witnessed...From the moment she appeared on the stage the atmosphere in the concert hall changed ...people began to have all types of unusual reactions...some were crying others entered a trance, a grown woman in front of me nearly fainted,...so i grabbed her thinking she was about to fall...she slapped me and ....well suffice it to say the she did not care for my attempt at chivalry, buT that did not do enough to spoil the mood...so for the next hour and forty minutes i was riveted to my seat...and i generally prefer the heavier stuff like slayer, symphony x, anthrax, pantara etc..Her voice reverberated brilliantly and was so poignant without overwhelming the ears...stupendous, i tell you, this recording doesn't due her any justice... to approximate what i heard in that concert hall, you should listen to her in the "wishes to eternity ,dvd"...at any rate greetings from the U.S., and judging by your accent, i assume you are British......

@@faiffull3532 he suffered from terrible insomnia and it was affected his life. He stepped back and his friend Kai took over until he could return, however, he has since officially resigned from his drumming position as of this year. He is still involved with Nightwish, but he is now in the background. (and he is back to sleeping properly from what I have heard, he just doesn't want to risk a relapse by getting back into the late nights and such.) Even with his exhaustion he always played like a beast, just like Bryan above said.

It's not that the song is sad, it's just that the atmosphere is so powerful when you are there watching them play this song live! I still get chills every time I hear this song, and while I agree with some of the other commenters that Floor's live version is better, I still love the song with Tarja's vocals, seeing as she is the one who originally sang it on the studio version. This song will always be my all time favourite!!

although at the time, Floor did an admirable job in her version still using her classical voice mixed with metallic splendor its important to know that the acoustics and recording background was very different from the 2005 recording with Tarja and that accounts for most of the different sound quality...to see Tarja trully shine you need to hear her in all her marvellous glory in the from wishes to eternity concert ...with little accompaniment she sounds astounding (swanheart,dead boys poem and walking in the air)

Agreed! This song, Phantom of the Opera, shows just how great Tarja really is, as does her own cover of it from ACT I. In fact, her ACT I performance is even more impressive because she's 6 months pregnant with her daughter, Naomi. Anyway, this song requires a vocalist with a powerful head voice, not just a rock singer who can yell and scream and it really shows Tarja's abilities. He should also check out some of the older Nightwish stuff from Wishes to Eternity, like Pharaoh sails to Orion. Some people feel that was truly Nightwish greatest Era. In that song Tarja is joined by Taipo Wilska, who also has a very unique and powerful voice and is a stark contrast to Tarja's. In those early days the music was more edgy and less compromised. Back then when Tarja was accompanied by male vocalist, they also had unique voices and were not just bass players who looked metal and also happened to sing a bit.

Reading comments can be the funniest thing. I personally prefer Tarja's voice to Floor's. I feel like she is telling of an epic journey. Floor's voice is just kind of nice I guess but I don't feel anything really. Check your facts man, Tarja was not the previous singer to Floor, she was the ORIGINAL singer, they had Anette Olzon replace her originally, then Floor replaced Anette! And also, I'll give my input on the whole Floor vs Tarja debate. While I have HUGE respect for Floor and I think she is a fantastic singer, from a purely technical standpoint she may even be slightly better than Tarja... I will still always prefer Tarja because she is the original, she was, and always will be the essence of Nightwish in my book, sure Tuomas is a huge part of it too, but they would NEVER have made it to the heights they have without Tarjas incredible talent! And finally, I encourage ANY Nightwish fan, past or present, from Team Tarja or Team Floor, to check out Tarja Turunens solo work if you haven't already! She has done some amazing work since getting kicked from Nightwish!

Great comment, but technically Tarja as master of one thing, is on a whole different level to Floor who is jack of all trades, but master of none. Still, some (mostly new converts) prefer Floor's versatility and brighter sharper sound to Tarja's intentional inflexibility from her strengths. Starting from Century Child, Tarja also started to sing in a non operatic style a bit more on e.g. Feel For You. And is pretty amazing at it tbh

But yea, master of none of the rest but still damn good at them Also this song (Ghost Love Score) is a perfect example of a bad song for Tarja while being great for Floor. Just listening to this version i can tell Tarja has to take a breath, sometimes twice, in a sentence, and even once on a hanging note. Floor can bash out the whole thing in one and hold the end longer, much longer. Her full power annunciation isn't as clear as Tarja, Tarja you can nearly always understand (for the first time listening with no subs). But Floors versatility suits this song way better than Tarja, the different styles make a much better story of the song, an evolution of the voice to suit that part of the song. Now....... Supremacy..... is Tarjas.... all of it.... just.... yea.... It really depends on the song. Tarja just wouldnt be able for poet and the pendulum for example. Ghost love score got straight up robbed by Floor. Nemo is Tarjas (tho floors is quite good), Romanticide is Floors, I wish i had an Angel is Marcos :D i mean Tarjas haha.

I wish we could finally put this Tarja vs Floor crap to rest. It's getting old and boring. I know NW from the beginning, from the early days, when almost nobody knew them. Seen them live for the first time in 1998 in Kitee, the final gig of their first tour. We traveled across half of Europe to see them and did never regret a minute. We had a blast. I can't believe that was more than 20 years ago. Tarja was just a cute young girl, a bit over 20 back then, but she had an enormous voice, huge and powerful, a bit rough around the edges, because this was before she got formal classical vocal training, but she was amazing nonetheless. She had so much energy on stage, you could almost feel it in the audience and at the same time, she appeared a bit shy and sometimes even awkward, probably a result of relatively little stage experience at that time. The whole band radiated energy, you knew from the first note they had as much a blast in playing as we had in viewing. They had a lot of fun and those gigs in their early days were very special, almost magical moments. A lot of things happened since those early days, but they are still around kicking ass and playing good music. The band is definitely better than ever before, now they're all in their early 40s and experienced musicians and Floor has contributed a lot to their current style. I've all respect for Floor, she must have been working incredibly hard to sing Stargazers, which is known to be one of the most demanding vocal parts in Nightwish's history, with such finesse. But because of my long history with Nightwish and quite a few of those magical moments, Tarja will always have a special place in my heart, because without her, Nightwish might not have been able to rise to international fame. It was Tarja and her remarkable vocal talents who made Nightwish a very special experience. Nightwish is not about Tarja OR Floor, it's about BOTH of them. They both contributed a lot to the band's success and they both are successful, because they are good. Comparing them directly doesn't lead us anywhere except into endless and pointless fan battles, because they are very different singers. There is no need to build Teams for either of them.

Nothing wrong with listening to the songs from the Tarja-era, she is a huge part of Nightwish' history after all, the only thing that bugs me is when people (in the comments) start comparing Tarja and Floor because they are two very different singers and brings their own "flavour" to their singing. That being said, like many others here are saying it wouldn't hurt to check out Floor's version of this song too, if only to see how she makes the song her own and to hear a different take on the same song. Tarja was the original singer. Between her and Floor is Anete Olzon (Dark Passion Play and Imaginaerum albums). Tarja Turunen is a trained opera singer. In fact, part of the reason why she was kicked out of Nightwish is because from a certain point she started spending way more attention to her opera career than to Nightwish, pushing back rehearsals and on one occasion even a Nightwish date in favour of a performance with the Finish Opera. She has far less presence on the stage (in my opinion) than Floor Jansen. I have something strange going on, in that, when I hear the older songs with Tarja singing, I prefer those versions, But, when I hear the same songs with Floor on vocals, I prefer her versions. Beats me... Saying one is better over the other is more a question of taste, really, as they have completely different timbres. Overall, I think Floor has a much stronger voice. Again, that's my opinion.

Back in the day, when Nightwish maintained their own official forums on their own website, the crying girls explained that it was a little annoying and embarrassing that the DVD editing made it seem as if they did non-stop crying the whole time. They were in the front row of the very first rock show that ever sold out Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, and since it was the last show of the tour being filmed for a DVD, the band was in pretty fine form -- even though Tarja, for example, was singing with the flu. A Nightwish show is an experience, as you've picked up on already. I was in my 30s the first time I saw them live and in my 40s the last time, and I still cried both times. By the way, Tarja Turunen is not an opera singer as some are wont to say. Her vocal education includes classical chamber singing and artsong, but to the best of my knowledge she's never been trained in operatic projection (over the orchestra). Hence, she uses amplification when singing her traditional repertoire live. She's exceptional at what she does, but what she does is not opera.

According to what I've heard, Tarja had the flu during this show. In my opinion, you can definitely hear it a bit in her voice. I'm not really sure where I stand in the Nightwish singer debates. I think Floor is great for them now. She can do the operatic style of Tarja decently well as well as the more pop style of Annette while bringing her own flavor to the delivery. Tarja is fantastic in the studio albums, but in my opinion, she is typically hit or miss in live shows. Tarja in her best live performance is probably better than Floor at her best live performance, but Floor in an average live performance is probably better than Tarja in an average live performance.

Tarja's parts in the albums are heavily edited especially on Century Child and Once. Live she misses a lot of notes and no actual power but forcing. Floor doesn't have any of these problems and she is so much better singer in general and especially better performer.

@@mikkolaine4883 Tarja has a magnificently extensive chest and head voice range...i have never heard her miss a note .and i have been listening to her for over 20 years and been to a number of her concerts with and without nightwish...i believe you are referring to her exclusively classical vocal approach which in faster songs sounds a bit expedited as she is pronouncing the words in fast succession,...that does sound a bit awkward but she compensates for it by extending her vibratos...Floor cant hit Tarja's highs and so she doen't even try..she excels in metallic escalations which is not Tarja's forte...performance wise, you should see her utter acrobatics on stage during kinslayer, wishmaster, end of all hope, and numerous other performances....Floor has a more forceful style while Tarja prefers a more elegant approach...thats all but they both work hard at it...

I prefer the ending with Floor ( just the ending) but I love Tarja the most. Yes, Tarja was the first singer. Anette was the weakest singer for NW in my opinion. Kinda funny that many pronouce Tarjas name wrong. Its "Tarya" (; cant wait for your reaction to "Phantom of the opera end of era concert" Its my personal fav performance of Tarja because she shows all of her vocal power. And yes, Floor is great for NW, they have a new cooler sound now but I prefer the classic mystic Nightwish. When u compear Tarjas and Floors Phantom of the Opera, you know what I mean. Tarja is a fav for many many people but many also prefer Floor. I personally dont listen to NW that often with Floor because Tarja was just special for me because she has this dark color to her voice but stays delicate and elegant..I cant describe it...sorry english is not my motherlanguage. Anette was horrible...just a good pop singer but not for a Metal band, but u can check her out if u want to. I also totally recomend the band " Within Temptation" songs like " Mother Earth" "Angels" "Stand my Ground" "The Howling" "The Promise" and many more :p

That "dark mystical voice" is actually pure lack of skills and power. Like here it's very easily hearable. She has to push the classic vocals. Floor does it much more lifeful, pure and free. I haven't listened to this performance in a long time and now I almost skipped it after hearing the notes that I've heard Floor making them in a so outstanding way. Tarja is not even close.

I even played in a band with her sister for a while, who also has a great voice.. It's just that Tarja's operavoice combined with her presence and accent makes it like winter is coming...

The truth is Nightwish died the night of that final show in Hartwell Arena in 2005. The Nightwish that exist now is a different band and is a mere shell of it's former self. I think it's obvious that even Tuomas now realizes this. Why else would he be releasing a new "old" album mostly made up of old recordings of Tarja? Also notice how now he's focusing on his new project, Auri, which is probably what Nightwish would have been without Tarja. Tuomas, himself, admitted on the End of Innocence DVD, that it was Tarja's vocal style that turned what was original an acoustic folk music project into a concept of a metal band. The original plan was 2 guys and a girl (Tuomas, Emppu, and Tarja) recording a folk style acoustic project. It's very interesting to note the similarity between this and Tuomas new Auri project, an acoustic folk music project with 2 guys and a girl (Tuomas, Troy, and Johanna).
