Toumas said this about harvest in the latest Metal Hammer magazine... "It's a song about laughing at death, The lyric is pretty grim and dark, but the music is cheerful and you have this long dance section in the middle. In this song you're dancing before death; You're smiling at ths scythe"

I like his voice a lot, perfectly blends with the music A few years ago I developed a phenomenon known as synesthesia, which means, that some senses are more linked: I hear something and get a special taste in my mouth for example with a saxophone I get the taste of nougat in my mouth and with Troy I taste golden caramel. Thank you, Tuomas

It is also about make your life meaningful, so when your time comes you will be able to face death in the eyes and smile at his scythe knowing you lived to the fullest, inspired the next generation and didnt wasted your time as zombie, a walking dead corpse ("Arrive alive"). And if you have to do the ultimate sacrifice, make sure it is worth it. I'm so glad that Tuomas didn't chose the same path as Chester Bennington when he faced his world crumbling. Respect!

You're the first I've seen to actually go into depth about the meaning of the song, let alone hit the nail on the head with the symbolisms. I knew the song had a deeper meaning than on the surface (I mean it is Tuomas after all) but I know very little about religion, so I'd never even have scratched the surface of the meaning. For that sir, you have earned a sub. Shame on the 4 people who disliked this video.... That said, a lot of people are calling the last two songs singles. They're technically not as they're part of the new album, I think they're just 'teasers' for the album in April. Can't wait to hear it all live.

Some people want more of the same, all else is heresy. Amazing how Tuomas has evolved from the hard times of The Poet and the Pendulum to the hope and joy of Harvest. Nightwise is the shared story we are all invited to feel, the good, the bad (the singers drama) and the wonderful.

With NW you have to accept the unexpected, in a way like songs from Queen from days of Night of the Oera and day at the races, you never know what kind song is next. A very folky song, I guess more radio oriented but I guess it fills the slot in the coming CD. Still there is a lot of stuff going on to keep things interesting. Once again NW master the way to boaden their sound to include everything to keep them falling in what excpected to be another typical NW sound, still sounding NW. Tuomas is a great songwriter/composer and the band understand to do what makes a song great. In lyrics, world class as always as you get to hear or story inbeddedd in a song. One other thing, like Elan, it is neat to have a few songs on a light side along the epic stuff like Ghost Love Story, The Poet, and The Greatest Show... At first I thought including flutes and pipes did not fit in NW but it works and it is a bold move to have Troy on the lead vocals considering the fact that Floor and Marko are really outsanding vocalists and Troy is doing a great job as it makes the song more personal, almost humble. It will be interesting to see how the new album will sound like and where the next album after it will take us!

Bill Attercliffe, perhaps that’s how it is. I must’ve interpreted it wrong because of how the seasons also have a code (something they follow) which is quaternary (consisting of four units: spring, summer, autumn, and winter), and the mention of a rose being a symbol of how the beautiful dies (seasons marking the lifecycles of some plants). Thanks, though. It’s good to know the correct interpretation.

Well there's something poetic with a picture of every single human as a single strand of grain, that eventually will be harvested. It's up to us what we do with this time and what we want to pass on to the next generation, before our inevitable death. I also agree that we should arrive at the harvest alive... so many people seem to have forgotten how to acctually live.

My take on this one is quite similar as yours: We as individuals travel through life, building experiences, knowledge, self awareness and identifying the role we have on other people lives and the world around us. In history, harvest was always a celebration of a human and nature relationship. Never ending circle of joy and misery of life and death. So this song is all about the pace of life itself and us evolving towards our very own HARVEST. Really liked your reaction and thoughtful comments. Regards, L.

Nightwish meets Jethro Tull! But not first time. I knew this Celtic Hymn is coming, but still it's a little surprise. You are right, that it's opposite to Noise. Troy's voice suits this kind of folk song very well and the harmonies are perfect. Your text analysis is very deep and complex. If you're right, I can't say and does it matter in the end. Great job and thanks!

Great reaction. Type of song that requires more than one hearing as it's so different to Noise that it throws the listener off initially. Coupled with the fact that Troy takes over the lead vocals also adds to the initial confusion. Once it's heard a few times a true appreciation of the song materializes. All songs are open to personal interpretations but I doubt that Tuomas is advocating a journey towards God as both him and Troy are very openly secular. In fact from comments made by the majority of the band after the release of Endless Forms, they gave the impression that all of them were secular. Still like I stated earlier, songs are open to personal interpretations and you can give whatever meaning you wish to any song. If you haven't seen the interview with Tuomas and Troy expressing their secularism here's the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kHvYiH-hidynfNU

Tuomas has really shaken up the Nightwish business strategy with this album - a double album with a complete orchestral work on one disc, and now releasing singles in consecutive months. This song is a Trojan horse - on the face of it you're getting a Celtic folk pastoral, but the lyrics conseal some pretty stinging rebukes about religion and other human practices. The lush harmonies really grab you. The Troygasm takes a while, but I was soon taken over by the customary goosebumps. 🤘 "They'll find the pretty words, and tame flocks to herd." Could either be a critique of the way religions control people looking for answers, or maybe populist politicians offering simplistic solutions to those they have persuaded to their cause, or even the anti-science Flat Earth brigade.

@@bridgetmccracken1381 I don't hate people who are religious, as long as they don't use it to judge others. I question why they believe, given the lack of evidence. That method does not work for me. Tuomas isn't religious, so I based my assessment on that.

Maybe my expectations were too high but this song is quite a disappointment. It gets slightly better once the instrumental part starts, but still.... meh. IMO, the song itself is not among the best 50 NW songs. Besides that, it also feels almost like Troy is singing only because the others felt he deserves a bigger role in the band - not because his singing actually makes the song better. Troy is a fine singer, but he ain't Marko and he sure ain't Floor. The comparison is probably unfair, but its hard to avoid given the band has awesome singers like Marko and Floor. Or maybe I'll just need to hear it a few (dozen) times before I'll get it.

@@sarahhagedorn4996 No, I've nothing against trying. But I'd keep those kinds of experiments in studio, not release them. I mean, if someone else in the band can do it way better, why in heck should they settle for less? I always thought NW is all about doing what the music requires, not what it takes to keep the egos satisfied. Its a sad, sad thing if that has changed. Besides, Troy has talents the others cannot match. Why don't let him shine on those even more, if they deem his contribution/role too limited?
@peruru2476

For me it definitely got better the more I listened to it and now it's stuck in my head, which is annoying. But I also feel like a version with Floor or a combination of the two would sound great and I would actually enjoy it more. Like Troy being lead on the verses and Floor on the choruses, especially the last ones, because I feel they are kinda bland. Troy's voice in those choruses is not really strong enough and quite monotonous and the harmonies get drowned by the music. So Floor's voice or even just some ad-libs or an increase in volume of her high harmonies, which sound lovely, might have made that part a bit more interesting for me. That being said, I don't think Marco's vocals would have fit the song as a lead. And it will be quite interesting to see live, because up until now Troy hasn't really convinced me with his live lead vocals (i.e. The Carpenter and the beginning of My Walden). And I really do like Troy. He seems to be a great and funny guy, I just prefer him playing his instruments, especially the pipes and the e-bow...I really do love the sound of that.
@esakoivuniemi
@esakoivuniemi 4 жыл бұрын
@@peruru2476 Its the lack of dynamics and lack of power, especially in the chorus, that bothers me too. Troy has quite nice tone in his voice, IMO, but he lacks the skill that would make his singing interesting, dynamic and expressive. (BTW, Noise too had the vocals mixed too low in volume to my taste).
