About 5 years ago now, I went to see a Nightwish show in Seattle, WA. I arrived in line outside the venue, just like everyone else. Eventually, a staff member from the event was scoping the line, asking if anyone would like to purchase a VIP ticket, as they had extras available. I asked how much they were, and she said, "We're selling them for $100." I didn't have a lot of money, but I knew I'd regret it if I didn't. So I jumped on the chance immediately. I had not expected to have that kind of opportunity that day. I had only expected to see them play, as I had a couple times before. I never expected to meet my favorite band! So I waved goodbye to the people around me, while lightheartedly declaring myself "upgraded". When I finished paying my way, I was inside the venue. I jumped in VIP line to meet the band, who where situated behind a large table in front of the stage. The table was a considerable distance away from where the line was formed. One by one, people were escorted to the table to sign autographs, and greet the band members. The whole thing was done at an incredibly awkward, monotonous pace. The encounter was very brief for each fan. Each fan worked their way from left to right at the table, working their way through each band member. Then, the fan would pose behind the band for a photo. Then, the fan was escorted away, much in the same way they were brought to the table. Eventually, it was my turn. I nervously walked up to the table and greeted every member of Nightwish from left to right: Marco, then Kai, Troy, Floor, Emppu, and finally, Tuomas. Of course, I thoroughly thanked every one of them for the music, and every emotion I've experienced because of them, for so many years. I got everyone's autograph on my ticket stub, and also on a provided program given to VIP members. Then I positioned myself behind both Floor Jansen and Troy Donockley. I couldn't believe I was right next to my heroes! I leaned in for the photo, like every other fan had done before me. I couldn't believe it! This was beyond amazing! But something was missing. All the while, the whole experience seemed far too robotic...too mundane for everyone sitting at that table, including myself. It didn't seem real enough. I needed to do something. So I did. The escort man approached me, as he did everyone else after their photo was taken. But I was not done yet. I may never be able to do this again, I thought, and it meant too damn much to me. After all, I never thought I would ever get this chance! So, I approached Tuomas once more. He turned around from the table, with an expression of surprise on his face. I then said, "Tuomas, I need to thank you again. Can I give you a hug?" He didn't even say a word. He stood straight up out of his chair, extended his hand, and embraced me as though I were not a stranger. My right palm in his, he heartily slapped his left hand on my back as though he'd known me for years. Needless to say, there are not many times in my life that can even begin to rival this moment.

Those who are disappointed either aren't listening properly, or aren't the Nightwish fans they think they are - especially those who seem to want them to continue to plough the same furrow for their amusement alone. A band that doesn't grow creatively atrophies and dies.

my fav comment that Tuomos said about floor was when he was in an interview, i can not remember the question, (this is not word for word to what he said, but, it is pretty close) he said something aboutwanting to play the nightwish back catalogue with floor, play more of their older stuff, but, it depends on if it can go with her singing style, and then gives a little laugh as to say, i will just throw the phone book at her coz she eill nail it haha, i LOVED that comment he said about her :)

I have a request: I would Love to see Tuomas create a video that shows him building and playing a song. You can glimpse him working on various computers, synths, sequencers etc. on behind-the-scenes videos. There are a few seconds of him playing during concerts, but little that I could show someone interested in composing and playing. It would be great to see what equipment he uses and how all this is all done.
@kataratify
@kataratify 2 жыл бұрын
I know this comment is a year old but you can see a little bit of him working on songs from the Maan Mainiot documentary. He's stated in past interviews that he doesn't actually use any computers at all minus the ones that are in the Korg keyboards themselves. Hes stated that he's using the Korg Karma or Oasis and the good old trusty N364 (which i think is the one he's using in the documentary). So for a while the demos were on floppy disks... He's mentioned that the basic drum tracks he records one drum hit on the keyboard at a time and then quantizes them using the tools inside the keyboard.

a raw demo without all the nuances he has in his head, must be very different from what we hear on the album or live. hoping they can get a feel for where he wants to go, must be excruciating to wait for their responses. i've toyed with being a writer for most of my life, but never completed anything other than a very short story. part of why may be my fear of nobody liking it.

Then we have true musical geniuses like Tuomas Holopainen and Thomas Bergersen. They are storytellers with their own visions of mankind and the universe we inhabit. Thank God for such individuals as there for they are islands of beauty and sanity in a sea of madness.

You find him in Kitee and typically in July there is so called KIMAF festival when international fans and NW army members have a summit seeing the band members, covering songs in concerts etc. Go to local cafe or to sauna and begin a chat with him. One thing is so great in him is that he is humble and easy to contact easy going person not acting like a Megastar above average people.

Strange, isn't it? Thanks for the great interview. If I'm correct Richard Dawkins said evolution is a blind mechanism. I do not agree with that. I'm pretty sure it's something more than that. In a way evolution itself is a creation. But from what? A (awareness) creation force that once originate. But in the end, who really has all the answers and maybe we don't even need them. Just live the good life as much as possible. Craw give gifts that they made powerfulmind.co/crow-family-bring-him-presents/ And this fish makes geomatric circles on the sea bottom: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eGqUpaKwrramb68 And several animals make nests in a way that is not only functional. And birds making their own feather extensions for its tail, its their own idea. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZKWnWiuoayko7c And dolphins bored out of their mind making bubble art, but in the wild they also come up with group choreographed swim dances kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5iTdoF9ppx0kM0 And if we dont look at art from a human perspective maybe we see here beavers giving a true expression of their beaverness kzbin.info/www/bejne/n6qxcmloe9d-eac (its functional but they had too much food there anyway and still they built their own lake just because they can and feel like it. I think for a beaver this landscape-architecture besides a home might also be a piece of art. And pass their vibe and style to the next generation.

7:23 exactely, for me that thought is comforting too - and I feel it even more through the music. I knew he was thinking the same by listening to his songs.

A real, real artist, in every sense...born on first X-mas day. He was expected, in 1976 and chose the right day to come to our planet ;-} - I, kind of, get the same feeling of late Robin Williams, when watching and hearing this fine-tuned human...it's good!

brilliant mind and composer....i just dont agree so much with worshiping science, science just doesnt give answers on the most important questions...i wish tuomas will study theology some day as much as he studies biology and other theories...education on theology will give him many aswers, he will see that God is not some mambo jambo stuff....thank you for the music Tuomas, love you!

@Marcus Aurelius people dont understand that science changes... What once was science today is not. For example. Late 19 early 20 century rascism was scientific narrativ, that some races are stronger, brtter, more valuable... Today thats wrong
