In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm returning to Nightwish and listening to two versions of their cover of Phantom of the Opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber. I first listened to their cover in episode 86 two years ago. Now, I'm reminding myself of this live version featuring Tarja Turunen before listening to the band's new release of the song featuring vocals by Floor Jansen and veteran stage actor/singer Henk Poort. I loved hearing both versions, especially noting the contrasts in vocal color and delivery. I hope you enjoy!

I heard Tarja's version first and while I absolutely love Floor and her vocal range, Tarja and Marko's version hits better to me because of how their voices blend together. I enjoyed listening to both, don't get me wrong at all.

The new version with Floor and Henk was my introduction to Nightwish just over a month ago. I was so blown away that I devoured their entire discography in a week. Since then I've come to appreciate all eras of the band and the strengths that each member has brought to the table over the years. I'm 54 and never thought I would have a "new" favorite band at my age. I've never been happier to be proven wrong.

God, I miss Marko... His deranged phantom was incredible. I had the luck of seeing this song live on that tour almost 20 years ago in Buenos Aires. I don't know why they didn't play this song more often on subsequent tours, it's a bop.

My understanding is that there was so much chemistry between Tarja and Marko on this song and then kicking Tarja right after this performance that Marko didn't want to perform it with anyone else, respecting the trust Tarja put to him. But now it was not Marko who sung the role of the Phantom and by freak accident Marko was no longer even in the band, so there were no obstacles for a momentary return of a classic.

@@JariJuslin I'll have to agree. I think Marco with his style probably did give us the best Phantom. But I also like Diego Valdez from Act I. Tarja was just so good, and you were so blown away that sometimes it was easy to overlook the male vocalist. But in hindsight, I see the Tarja and Marco really did work well together. Another song where this is apparent is Everdream. Anyway, the contrast between their different style and sound adds something. This was also the case with Tapio Wilska and Tarja on Pharaoh sails to Orion.

Tarja's voice has more resonance and vibrato and is just better suited for songs like this. Tarja is classically trained. Floor is more of a rock/metal singer. Floor is certainly a good singer but on songs like this she's kinda out of her element.

@@mdnblues Sorry, but Floor IS NOT an opera singer. That's simply not true. If you believe it, you need to go back and do more research. Floor studied "musical theater" at a rock academy. That's NOT classical training. And Floor has never been an Opera singer. Even Tarja, isn't actually an opera singer but she has much more classical training than Floor. Tarja studied at the Sibelius Academy in Finland, and went on to Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe in Germany. Also Tarja has released classical albums. Anyway, one can easily tell just by listening to the difference in their performances here.

Both versions are amazing in their own ways! Tarja and Marko have a more ghostly, haunting version, whereas Floor and Henk sing what sounds more traditional. I could listen to both on repeat!

I guess I am biased because I have classical vocal training myself, but I miss Tarja's color and vowels. Her classical style transition through dipthongs is always nice to hear. I also love the height in her sound, even at the top of her range. I still think Floor is awesome though, don't get me wrong.

Tarja also had quite a heavy finnish accent which affects a bit how she sings things in english. In general I do like Floor more in Nightwish, but I think I like the Tarja's and Marcos version still better. Both are good though. I don't mind that Henk doesn't try to sing the same way than Marco. He has done this musical so many times and is great in what he does and chose to go with more of his style, but learned to add that rock grittyness in Beste Zangers which was new thing for him.

Yes, Floor is a great singer, no doubt. But she's definitely a rock/metal singer and that's her strength. However, on songs like this, Tarja's classical skills shine through like a laser beam and her voice explodes like a supernova. And yes, I know the song in question here is from a play and not an opera. However, the character, being depicted by the song is an Opera singer. So, the songs should be rendered as such.

He talked about this a long time ago, it's called relative pitch and apparently it's something you can learn. Relative, because he'll have to listen to a note beforehand to sort of get calibrated.

@@keithharris3734 I appreciate your comment. It reminds me that not everyone who is obsessed with Floor needs to put Tarja down (and vice versa). It was Tarja’s voice doing the metal that attracted me to Nightwish in the 1st place. But Floor has her own tone, her own style. That’s why I do like the multiple versions of some songs. I don’t know why I’m so protective of Tarja, I’ve only known about this band for a year. Things are always evolving, but perhaps I’m familiar with what it’s like to throw away and disrespect the old when the new comes along. One may prefer the new, but foundations are important. Anyway, thanks again. The comment means a lot to me.

Thank you, Doug! It is precisely this NW with Tarja performance that caught my ear and made me a NW fan when I first saw the video back in 2000. So this was a good memory for me. Tarja, Anette and Floor have contributed to NW in their own way. I am really enjoying my NW journey with Floor as vocalist. She has such a great range and tons of colours. When Phantom was set to come to Toronto I was working on theatre props and our company had the task of beading the chandelier. If you had nothing on the go, you were separating the beads or measuring length of fishing line or beading. We also did the boat and I myself personally made a whip. Great times with Kate Bush playing in the background. Then I was fortunate enough to see Phantom portrayed by Paul Stanley. Great job too!

I start to feal like a broken record by now since I cant listen to Nightwish anymore without missing Marcos voice together with Floor. Sure Floor is amazing, really insane! But for me it was the combination of the two voices that made their music so epic. I love both versions. Tarja seems to bring a slightly dark tone and is more operatic. While Floor is just naturally brighter in tone and feels a bit more modern. I prefer Tarja's approach to the final ascending portion, because on first listen I was not sure why Floor decided to do three of the same notes before hitting the final note. However, I feel the way Floor nails and holds the final note is better. So yes, they both bring something unique and amazing to the performance. I do however agree with many people here in preferring Marco's vocals, because it fits so well with what Nightwish is doing with the song.

Unfortunately I was a toddler 18 years ago and couldn't see Nightwish live, but I was able to experience this brilliant performance of Nightwish with Henk live on stage.

Doug-Love what you do here. Did you know the song was originally recorded by Sarah Brightman and Steve Harley, which became a UK hit single music video in 1986, prior to the musical. Sarah and Andrew were married to each other at the time. In its theatrical debut, it was sung by Brightman and Michael Crawford in their roles as Christine Daaé and the Phantom. Some say they were both the best. I saw Michael perform as the Phantom in Los Angeles in the late 80's and 3 other times with others in the part. The part of Christine was written for Sarah Brightman. Dale Kristien is well known for her record-breaking four-and-one-half years in the role of 'Christine Daae' in The Phantom of the Opera. Ms. Kristien first played Christine opposite the original Phantom, Michael Crawford, on Broadway and they both premiered the Andrew Lloyd Webber show in Los Angeles-I saw here in the part 4 times-she was fantastic. in 2004 floor with her former band ( after forever ) was the preshow of nightwish. nightwish performd the fantom back then and of course we were there up front. last jan. 2023 we were at the nightwish concert when they performd the famtom again. we are so happy we were at the fornt to see it all happen.

Henk is one of the artists who are the the base at the mordern musical productions in the Netherlands. This started with les miserable in 1991 and since then musicals in the Netherlands are a pretty big thing. And I think “soldaat van oranje” is the musical 2.0 at this moment.

The line in the song, which goes something like "but it's me they'll hear" is opposite on these 2 versions - Marco sings that line in the 2005 version and then Floor sings it today - the Floor/Henk version sounds more correct - what do you think?

First version with Tarja is more some kind of relic of 90' symphonic metal band spirit IMHO : more raw material and seems more instinctive, more experimental in a certain way. Floor version is very well produced and overall, more clean and controlled (I do not speak about singing obviously). Impossible for me to say which version I prefer as I really love equally both for totally different reasons :)

I do like the first much more, but it has nothing to do about the singing. For vocals both are great, but for the band and the mix the original has energy and heavyness which is missing in the new one. Very few seem to give any focus for the sound of the band.

Instead of many I have to say that in this case I like the Tarja/Marco rendition best. The contrast and harmony in the two duets are clearly different. The first one has tension, rawness and schwung.The rendition with Floor/Henk sounds a little bit tired or maybe old fashioned (can I say that? Yes I can). All high notes are very impressive but Tarja and marco are giving it all, creating extra artistic and emotional layers in their performance. Floor is very talented and well trained but that doesn't always gives the best result. And Henk is Henk, a fine singer and nice person.

Ironically, these were consecutive performances of this song… just 17 years apart. Only having Tuomas and Emppu in common. There were no performances in between by Nightwish.

Doug, Tuomas said that they rehearsal the song just one day before this presentation, so they went directly to what they knew, after 17 years, with barely rehearsing it, I think it came out well.

I only made it through junior high playing a musical instrument (worse yet, it was trombone :P) but I watch your videos realizing I missed out on a complex and beautiful art/science by not pursuing it further. They've already written quite a bit of original music, and have a number of great music videos, but up until now, the live performance videos would not have been conducive to your level of analysis. Love love love Floor but just cannot get into newer Nightwish. The departure of Marko was the final nail in the coffin for me. Such an integral part of the sound, and his equally incredible yet contrasting vocals in Phantom of the Opera are the ultimate example of that.

Yeah, the neonightwish is still a good band, and Floor is surely a talented rock/metal singer, but the old Nightwish was just something else.Tarja and her rich full bodied powerful operatic voice combined wonderfully with Marcos and just created a unique special contrast. Also Tarja and Tapio Wilska worked well together in Pharaoh sails to Orion. Anyway, the new stuff just aint the same.

I agree, I can't get into the new era of NW either, while I like Floor from After Forever and I liked her performance of Poet and the Pendulum, but Tarja's voice combined with power metal was why I loved NW. Now I mainly listen to Tarja's solo, her music is much more interesting to me now.

Interesting they chose not to have Henk do the vocal climb matching Floor's, the way Marco did with Tarja, sticking to the BZ approach (presumably closer to how it was done in the show). Would've been curious to see where that BZ arrangement differed from these NW versions...

Yeah all cool but for me the version of 2005 with Tarja and Marko is like high on the Olymp, while all the rest (including the original by Sarah) fall short by a big measure.

I like this "then & now" back-to-back comparison. It might be interesting to do this on other songs from other bands, and examine how they evolve and modify over time, especially when the performers face inevitable aging ; do they adapt and compensate as the voice winds down, or do they somehow just get more powerful?

I was waiting for Marko's "all right!" in the end, but no. I love both performances, but Marko is the best Fantom ever, girls both are more than awesome, just different. Henk is cool, but come on, Marko did the best impersonation I think with his greetiness and darkness there, and scream of cource)

Not sure if anyone else has said it, and I don’t have time at the moment to search all the comments, but the main motif of “Phantom…” is suspiciously close to Pink Floyd’s “Echoes” - so much so, even Roger Waters has referred to it as “…probably actionable….”

Henk was the Dutch Phantom in the musical. I prefer the version with Floor. Floor can do more with het voice though both are great singers.
