This is THE phantom for me. Nothing beats Marko as the phantom for me. I did not care much about the album version though( i don`t care about musicals either), but this version and some few other live versions made this into a classic. Goosebumps every time.

One of their crew members put Jack Sparrow on the keyboard stand before one gig and Tuomas noticed during the gig that it was there. It became band inside joke during the Once world tour. Since that tour he's had all kinds of decorations on the keyboard stand.

Thanks!! Amazing rendition of the song!! The matching outfits with the mics is a Tarja thing. Tarja did it on that concert and on the ONCE tour before that. Everytime I see footage from this show, it makes my eyes tear up because I know I will never get to see Nightsih with this line up live, Tarja is and forever will be my #1 metal goddess, she is so fantastic I have no words! I do like Floor as well, but I seriously belive that Nightwish as a band in the form they exist today, would not exist without Tarja. Im sure Tuomas would still have started a band and probably made it quite successfull too since he's such a genius, but I don't think it would sound anything like Nightwish without Tarjas contribution! I remember seeing Tarja solo live for the first but hopefully not last time back in 2016, I seriously thought I was going to faint, it was an otherworldly experience!

What’s even more impressive about this duet is that it’s not a music video or recording but I live performance and they sound incredible. Also, Tarja was sick during this tour which makes me respect and admire her even more. It was absolutely incredible.

For me, the star of this song is Marko, i love Tarja and her performance a great deal, but it is Marko who pushes it from great to epic and then some. Also, his voice is made to sing together strong female vocals, his voice always fits the other voices, and his skill is on par with any of the singers he performed with. Final thought, "The Phantom of the Opera" as a musical, already has a bit of a rock vibe to it, i would not be the slightest bit surprised that when Andrew Lloyd Webber heard this rendition for the first time, he smiled and thought something like "i knew the song had this hidden in it", after all, this is his favorite version of the song.. a non-musical theater version.

I'd liked it for years, and it felt like it was finally time to cover it. It just so happened that after we'd recorded the song, I heard that a band called Dreams of Sanity had already covered it before us. But then again, does it really matter?" Marco had a central role in Phantom of the Opera, too. "Perhaps I'm guilty of some over-interpretation", Marco laughs. "I was listening to the musical version of the song and I was like, 'Okay, there's no way I'm up for that, but maybe I could sing it as a raving loony." Someone on our forum made a big deal about it, like, 'Why do people always assume that the Phantom is a crazy lunatic? He's in love! Why can't you interpret him in a way that would show his sensitivity?' But of course - the guy's just lurking masked in the sewers. Surely he's not mad, he's just in love!"

Great reaction! Love this performance. From the End of an Era concert. The band fired Tarja right after this concert via an open letter. The matching outfits, microphone and stand was a thing for this concert and they changed as her outfits changed color throughout the concert. Yes that is a Captain Jack Sparrow figure on his stand. Tuomas does look a lot like Captain Jack and is also a big fan of movie soundtracks and especially Hans Zimmer so it makes sense. Marko totally steals the show for me on this one. Tarja is great however I do think there are other songs that better showcase her voice. The Siren, Bless the Child, Planet Hell, Nemo, Wish I had an Angel, Sleeping Sun (love the 2005 music video), and Forever Yours are some of my favorite Tarja performances. Now you need to checkout Floor and Henk Poort's performance of this song. Henk is a famous musical theater star in the Netherlands and was the very first Phantom in the Dutch production of the show. My favorite performance is from the Dutch singing show Beste Zangers in 2019. They use the Nightwish arrangement but more rock and less metal and Floor is using a very musical theater style of singing. There is also a live performance with Nightwish in Amsterdam. When Floor asked Henk to sing Phantom with her on the show he agreed with the request that they sing it with Nightwish the next time they were in Amsterdam. Pandemic delayed that performance until 2022 but it was magical. They kept it a secret so the fans were unsure if they would do it and when it starts the fans go nuts. Floor is more operatic in her singing and she holds that final note for over 10 seconds.

This version introduced me to the Nightwish name back when it came out. I loved it!! I didn't follow them after that, sadly. My Mom did have one their CD's. I rediscovered them last year when i watched a compilation of reactions to GSL. That was my first reaction video i ever watched. I asked my Mom: Was it Nightwish that you loved? Yes it was. I have been obsessed with Nightwish and Floor since then. This is my favorite version. It's like my first love. 😊

It is Jack Sparrow on the keyboard stand. I believe it came from a fan, and the crew is responsible for it being there. 2005 concert in Helsinki (End of an Era DVD), Tarja's last Nightwish show, the guys knew but she didn't. She was fired after the concert after 9 years and 5 albums, but has gone on to a long and successful solo career. Tarja had several outfits in this 18 song set, the mic and mic stand were matched with each one. Andrew Lloyd Weber has seen this version, and he loved it. Song #5 on the night, try the next song, "The Siren". Also from this concert, Marko sang lead on the cover/tribute of Pink Floyd's "High Hopes".

Re:Yellow Dress - Tarja often had multiple costumes (2-3) together with matching mic/stand at many concerts, and they pulled out ALL the stops for the End of an Era concert since that was destined for a DVD release. This is from the End of an Era DVD, the final stop on the Once tour and the plan was always that this would be made into a DVD so they pulled out all the stops. IIRC Tarja uses something like 6-7 costumes and slightly smaller number of mics and mic-stands for this specific concert. The End of an Era DVD is easily findable as a HD remaster on KZbin) so if someone cared it wouldn't be hard to count. The End of an Era DVD is also infamous for some really janky & dated video effects on some tracks (flames around the picture, strange zoom), most modern version has these toned down as much as possible but there's limits. Fortunately it doesn't hurt it too much, it's just weird given how **** good the quality is for a 2005 concert recording.

Jon Lord, keyboardist of Deep Purple, made a concerto and even the band played with the london symphonic orchestra in the 70's (there is an album). Scorpions did one double album in 92 with an orchestra too.

The band Savatage (a direct precursor to Trans-Siberian Orchestra) were kings of the rock opera, if you've never checked them out. Songs like "Chance", "Not What You See", "The Hourglass", "Gutter Ballet", and "When the Crowds are Gone" are great examples. Not to mention, their entire album, "Streets: A Rock Opera". The albums "Dead Winter Dead" and "The Wake of Magellan" were also story-based concept albums / rock operas. Incredible works.

This is the classic lineup with the first singer Tarja and a GREAT cover of Phantom of the Opera. I love this one. I do recommend that You also listen to the more recent version performed with Floor in 2022 together with Henk Poort (the Dutch Phantom on stage). Interesting that you’ve picked a Tarja version of Phantom, personally I think this is the best for what it is! They started with her...as a founding member and her voice with music and lyrics by Tuomas made the foundation for the whole NW concept. They still have done more albums with her than with the substitute singers together until 2023. Marco and Tarja also act the roles of this classic so well. The color of the mic is speciality of this very concert which is one of the ever best there has been. See it totally and note it changes.

I’ve seen the Phantom of the Opera several times and even got to play in the pit orchestra for a run and this version of this part of the musical is my favourite. I do like Floor and Henks version but this one I really love because of Marko. You nailed it on the Jack Sparrow doll. Since you love rock operas so much, you should explore its birthplace. I recommend The Who, A Quick One (While He's Away), live at the rolling stone rock n roll circus. You will get see one of the most notorious live acts of all time and the birth of rock opera in one shot!

As fair as I know, the first rock opera was A Quick One While He's Away, from 1966. There is a live version from The Rolling Stones Satanic Circus which aired on the BBC. It's very raucous but you may want to give a listen

Great reaction. :) If you like when band mixing different music genres together, I really recommend Visual Kei, it's japanese movement as music, fashion etc. In Visual Kei music most bands are rock and metal, but you can find there almost everything, pop, electronic music, jazz, enka (type of traditional japanese music) and many many more, even in one band's discography you can find many different genres and styles, even in one song, but there are some typical theatrical elements for Visual Kei, in clean vocals, behavior etc. I really recommend band The Gazette, amazing band, definitely my favourite band ever.

i know i am late on this reaction, i hope you see this. one thing you notice at start of video, Jukka the drummer, grabs his head. He was in the midst of a migraine headache and he was in pain. There is a recent video release of Tarja and Marko reuniting after 20 years, they do Phantom of the Opera. It is worth watching as it’s awesome.

I have some difficulty watching this amazing performance at times knowing that right after this show Tarja was fired from the band. If she had any clue that was going to happen it didn't show in her performance and the rest of the band who did know gave it their all as well. There is an old saying that the show must go on and on that night Nightwish lived up to that for sure.
