Their live performances are more epic than the album versions. They often add something or try out something new that works for the song. I've been listening to their new album the last couple days (since it came out) and it's not an easy listen for the first time. Tuomas is really on some next level shit with this album. I am curious though what you think of it. I recommend Music, Pan and Tribal.

It’s not just that. The live versions are actually better than the album versions. That’s partly because Floor’s stage presence and her interpretations of the songs are better than Tarja’s interpretations and stage presence, but also because the live versions are a lot more energetic than the studio versions. Nightwish is just one of the best live bands I know.

@@treintje1001 I'd agree with that. The studio albums have their place too however. A lot of the finer details and more "magical" components to the songs typically get drowned out during live performances but are more evenly balanced or showcased alongside the other facets of the band in the studio albums (vocals, drums, guitars, etc.). That being said, I'm typically more in the mood for the live versions featuring Floor :). I have to be in a pretty chill mood to prefer the studio versions. (Floors vocals in the studio versions sound like they're taken down from 100% intensity and prowess to 60% at best).

They are not bad in a studio in any way, but in live performances you can see emotions of every band member, their interaction with each other and the crowd, their excitement and overall them enjoying every note they play or sing. That's why I prefer live versions -- especially for Nightwish who can play live anything more than perfectly. For the next song I can suggest Storytime from Wacken 2013, for a little bit of a contrast to the last two tracks. ;)

I also think Floor Jansen, the 6'1" Viking Metal Goddess, is singing their older stuff. That Wacken concert was from earlier in her career with Nightwish and I like her interpretation better. I like Nightwish's first two singers,, but Floor has incredible singing talent, range and stage presence. Their studio albums are all amazing. There are two reasons why people mostly suggest the live versions: First, Floor was only with the band since 2013 so many of their older songs were originally sung by their previous singers, so live is the only way to hear those songs sung by Floor. The other reason, as others have said, is that they are simply out of this world live. The quality of their live production and their stage presence makes it very worthwhile to view the live performances over the studio recording, and that's the hallmark of not only a great band, but great musicians.

Great reaction. Btw, I think that you answered your question yourself there. Nightwish are extremely good live as a touring band, and the energy they bring into their performances - combined with an excellent sound and visual production - elevate their work even more. You get to hear the music, see the band, watch the crowd and enjoy the lights and fireworks..that makes an excellent base for a FIRST reaction, especially when compared to just listening an audio track from the album...so people tend to recommend those videos first. The Waken 13 show is one of the first fully produced appearances with Floor. None of the songs she is singing are studio recorded or written for her. they are a mix of songs from the past 2 vocalists. Floor joined the band mid tour and learned the set list in approximately 2 days. The Waken concert is about 10 months after she was asked to fill in on the tour and i believe it was after this show they asked her to stay on as a permanent member in the band. This is why this show is so well liked aside from it being so good. You should watch the documentary about this tour. Nightwish's recorded material is more focused on musicality with a lot of emphasis on the keyboards and vocals. Sometimes the guitar is a support instrument and not way up in the mix for the studio recordings. Remember Nightwish is about the music, the lyrics, and the vocals. However in the live performances they do put the guitar a little heavier in the mix and because the strings and keyboards are lighter sounding they tend to be more supportive of the music except for on the intros or softer sections. This is why we always say to watch the live shows for a heavier sound and more energy and the charisma and stage presence of Floor. Also Floor tends to add some things vocally that do not appear on the studio recordings, just to add the WOW effect live. Nightwish music runs the gamut from very heavy to celtic folk music. Lyrically Tuomas composes with the style of a poet using myriad metaphors and imagery to tell the story. He also makes references to many other Nightwish songs, like Led Zeppelin used to do in the day. You may be too young to remember Led Zep? I think you like the heavier stuff, so maybe check out "Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean" live from Buenos Aires 2018. You will be able to see their new drummer, Kai Hahto formerly of the band, Wintersun. He kicks ass on this song. They're great live, yes, but also many of these songs were (vocally) transformed by Floor when she joined, and that treatment doesn't exist in the original recordings with the prior singers.

If you like Floor growling you definately should check out her previous band REVAMP most of their songs have her growling in them DISTAIN (live at grass pop) is a good one to start with or the song I CAN BECOME is a good one I just discovered last week If you want heavy NIGHTWISH then the song GHOST RIVER is a good one she does growl in it though it's not as noticeable (mainly on the lyric "believe as we scream") but if you dont necessarily need the growl but want heavy WEAK FANTASY is good But you most definitely need to checked out THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH(its a long one about 24mins) and also a most definitely POET AND THE PENDULUM(not until you look deeper into band and its history with their original singer)

Usually I find growling annoying, but here it fits the music. I like to compare it to the cowbell. Sprinkled in at appropriate times, it fits perfectly. If it becomes a dominant part of the music, it just sounds silly. PS, the letter "Ø" is pronounced as the letter "U" in the word "butt".
