For those who don't know, the larger Koi like the first one netted usually go out to larger ponds in the summer. There they enjoy swimming all summer long and then are gently rounded up in those mostly drained ponds later in the late summer / fall again and put back inside the fish houses. It's too cold during the winter for them to survive outside. So they spend part of the year outside in nice ponds. They (the fish owners) treat their fish like part pets but also as part livestock to breed and sell. I don't know if they eat any of them as they're too valuable as decorative pond fish for Koi Ponds. This comment is for anyone who thinks all of the Koi are left in the smaller fish house tanks their whole lives

Those koi have been highly selected , they are culled when very young . Most are put to sleep permanently at this point. Believe me , those left will all sell.

People I know in the uk use the meds that you use to sedate koi at a higher dosage so they never wake up. However I imagine at this scale of industry it involves throwing them in a bucket with no water. I guess that's not what you want to hear but there you have it !

not really. that's a basic tank for juveniles. they separate them when they get bigger.

Yea, after most of them die of confined spaces or suffocation. That is not a "basic tank". I could say cramming seven babies into one tiny cradle is a basic cradle and I'll separate them one they're old enough.
