I am on vacation in Kauai as I type this comment. In my travels I noticed this island in the distance. Curiosity got the best of me so I researched. So glad I did! What a fascinating history and story. The fact that this family and the native residence have worked and fought diligently to preserve the culture and the natural existence of this island is a class act by any humans I've ever heard of. Thanks for sharing this story.

Good example of how great it can be to have no government interfering in your life.

I'm so happy for this. Why does America need Niihau?

Beautyful! No government there! Wish was same for Maui! Maybe one day things will change!

One visit to Hawaii, you'll be hooked. A totally different vibe and feel. I feel the king knew his people would face the outside world eventually. Glad to see the Hawaiians holding onto their culture. Local areas of the islands are the most beautiful. Forget the resorts, support the locals. Although the resorts do support the locals, pennies to the dollar.

It felt like another US state to me. Totally spoilt. Our car window and every cars window in a car park was smashed when we came back from a remote hike. Lots of drugs there.

Everything privately owned is cared for better than government owned. This is a glaring example . Look at how poorly Oahu is managed…..it’s a complete dump. I know, I live on Oahu.

@@philwilson4937 I know this is super random, but I remember being in a house up in the hills of Santa Monica-it was Aka’s cousins house-and we were watching rough cuts of your Niihau documentary! We were up in California (Aka, my brother, and I) as we we’re taking back my brothers boat back from San Pedro Harbor to Kona. It was 1991!
