Event venues will usually math up the final bill two weeks beforehand when they have a good idea of how much staff/equipment they need for it. My guess is Niji got handed the bill yesterday and realized they'd lose less money cancelling than going through with it. No consideration for the hit cancelling another event will have on their reputation, of course. They don't care about screwing the few remaining fans dedicated enough to go to this concert. the whole branch is toast.

The safety thing is a nice public reason to cancel something, but I guarantee you: they were hemorrhaging capital to host a concert that had only 7% capacity so to pre-emptively save face and triage some of those equipment costs, it was nixed. Logistics don't lie. Anyone latching onto the safety thing as a primary driver for cancellation has never organized an event before.

I don't know that I feel any pity for people who bought AX tickets just to attend the concert. At this point, it would have been a bigger surprise for the concert to happen without any issue. Niji has a rough time keeping any schedule or promise to EN fans. The Niji Colors concert was all the warning anyone should have needed to avoid paying money for these concerts. Not only was it delayed a year, but they didn't even use that year to make it better; they actually spent time and money making it worse. So yeah, I don't feel any pity at all for anyone spending money on Niji products anymore. Y'all have had plenty of warning that they don't care about you, they just want your money.

Nijisanji piggybacking on Anime Expo was just because they were too cheap, lazy or incompetent to organize it themselves. As a person who has been going to the concerts/music performances since 2017, I can say the only ones that basically almost or do sell out were the Love Live/Idol ones. The entire arena is packed. When I attended musical guests that featured m-flo, May'n, etc, tons of seats are empty. I think some of the reasons behind this is 1. It costs money on top of an already expensive badge to get into AX and 2. There's just so much crap to do there. They definitely scaled back in 2019. I didn't go in 2022 but last year in 2023, I barely recall any music concerts. I don't think I expected Nijisanji to sell out even before this drama but it definitely hurt their rep. I would have considered it depending on the circumstances.

Yes, the badge as a requirement does deter a lot of people who would go normally, but that lies with Anime Expo trying to sell more badges. Anime Expo did state that they do not do refunds during the checkout process. I also think Nijisanji shot too high by booking the Peacock Theater. 400-ish people to me seems more reasonable... if they hadn't booked the Peacock. The Novo would've been a better pick. I also regularly talk with AX veterans (also being one myself) and we all knew it wasn't going to sell out. Some of them even bought tickets to the concert and were fans. It does suck for the people who went out of their way for this event only, it must be really disappointing.

@@Zenocide I think the Novo could've been booked the whole day for Nijisanji on Day 1 and then move one of the other events to another day. Like Utapri could've been moved from Day 1 to Day 2 and later in the evening after Obey Me, considering Obey Me would've been shown from 4:30-5:30 PST from their event schedule. But I'm not sure how the logistics of planning those concerts to be on the same day are, just that to me there is time for multiple events to happen and the Novo didn't have to be limited to have 1 show per day.

The actual reason Niji posted is intentionally vague. They want plausible deniability so people will interpret it as they will. If they want people to interpret it as 'threats of violence' then it can be interpreted as 'threats of violence' -- and if something happens because of it, they can say "we never said that." But the answer most people seem to be coming up with that aren't being stirred up by the agitation by 'fans' is the lack of seat sales - which is also covered by the "unable to provide an optimal environment" statement, because a very empty theater is still demoralizing and 'sub-optimal' for a performer The 'threats of violence' interpretation seems to only exist to stir people up intentionally, though I'm not sure what the exact reason is aside from trying to paint Niji in better light for cancelling the event as if they were doing it out of "safety concerns" -- but I don't think anyone is really buying that here

This was 100% about low ticket sales. last time I heard anything about this the seats sold was negligable. It dawned on them that the image of that huge hall not filled in the biggest anime con of the year would be terrible optics. An airline might not refund you, but if you suddenly can't make a flight, they'll usually extend a voucher for a flight good for a year from the cancellation date. A hotel is a tougher matter, but if they call sometime today, the hotel might be willing to refund them at least a partial. The whole "accelerate" and pump out as many talents as possible is really biting them in the ass here. Like yes, it's helped them grow a lot and allowed talents be showcased on a platform to allow them to get bigger audiences in comparison to their past lives. That part is good in my opinion. But having too many will inevitably spread resources too thin and this is an example of it imo. Members aren't able to establish their own fanbase long enough before the next wave comes to have them commit to such concerts.
