Something to keep in mind about stat buffs is that we're not only looking at the raw damage increase, but also the decrease in the number of hits it takes to KO the opposing Pokemon. If a +1 in Atk is enough to allow your mon to knock out the opposing mon in 1 hit instead of 2, then the stat buff is definitely worth it. Especially if the +1 allows you to sweep the opponent's whole team. For example, I watched someone using Quaxly with Work Up and Wing Attack to sweep the Bug Gym Leader's whole team in a nuzlocke. Of course, in actual competitive, moves that simply give a +1 in a stat are never used, because most mons usually have access to better boosting moves. But for challenge runs like nuzlockes, they can be helpful in the early game.
@jarenwang656 Жыл бұрын
Hone Claws also raises Accuracy though. In fact, it's one of only two moves that does (the other being Coil). Though it's worth noting that Sprigatito doesn't really benefit much from the Accuracy boost since most of its moves already have 100% Accuracy. Also, moves that raise stats one stage have seen quite a lot of competitive use. Dragon Dance and Quiver Dance immediately come to mind. There was also Calm Mind Manaphy during gen 5 weather wars, and Porygon-Z in gen 7 with Z-Conversion.

Actually, hone claws is one of the very rare +1 attack boosts that does have some competitive use, because it also boost accuracy. Plenty of moves have absurd power balanced by reduced accuracy, and having a way to remove that downside can absolutely be worth a single turn of setup.

As someone who accidentally killed the first Lechonk, then got them as the last dex entry, you don't have to catch it c:
@Bladehound83 Жыл бұрын
10:33 Okay, but Hone Claws is a good move since the +1 to accuracy as well can make more of a difference than you'd think. In addition to getting extra damage from +1 attack, you're also granted more stability when using moves that are powerful but with lower accuracy (like Cross Chop and Stone Edge). It probably isn't too good for Sprigatito specifically though since all of it's most commonly used moves other than Play Rough have 100 accuracy anyway.
@eeihral Жыл бұрын
I was actually going to put in a section noting how Hone Claws _does_ have really good synergy with Hustle (notably on Durant), but the text wall was getting too big. Most people in competitive also tend to just deal with the lower accuracy on stuff like Stone Edge or High Jump Kick if it's limited to one move on the mon, using the extra slot to fit in something like a coverage move instead. It sucks, because I like to find any reason to run Hone Claws (a move that boosts accuracy by 33% is just too interesting an idea to ignore), but while +1 Attack is how it is, those reasons are few and far between.
@Justic_ Жыл бұрын
As far as I'm aware, setup moves like DDance, Quiver Dance and Bulk Up also see relatively common use, so generally moves that give 2 quite useful stats like speed or defense. -rip Work Up though. As dead as the viability of mixed attackers-
@MrSyltphademus Жыл бұрын
@@eeihral I'd also like to add that in the PvE side of things, ANY setup move is strong because your opponent isn't going to play switch games on you. As long as you're taking less than 50% of your HP in damage, you can heal back to full and continue setting up (this also counts with the X item line). Then proceed to watch your 4x whatever sweep the entire enemy team. This is a big reason why Gyarados has always been such a strong pokemon in the regular games. 6 Dragon Dances and you sweep everything. To your point though, in VGC (the official supported format for pokemon), you're fighting double battles, so setup is either MORE difficult to pull off (your opponents can easily double up on you and knock out your sweeper at no cost to themselves) or fairly easy (lots of support pokemon that can redirect moves to themselves, Wide Guard/Quick Guard affect partner pokemon, both pokemon can go for setup so you'll either have two damaged but boosted pokemon or one full health boosted pokemon who can proceed to carry). So setup in competitive? Situational. Setup in the regular game? Completely busted.

Dragon dance is a special case becase having a speed boost is very important in competitive When you have a strong but frail pokemon being a little bit faster is the diference between losing or winning And the +1 attack is more usefull since usually the speed diference isn't so big as to need +2
@glimn4839 Жыл бұрын

I'm only refering to _single stat_ +1s at that part. DD is an amazing move because it nets you Attack _and_ Speed in one turn. A decent amount of other double +1 moves also see use: Bulk Up, Calm Mind, and even Cosmic Power have had their fair share of usage in recent years. And yes, I'm counting Hone Claws as a single stat +1, because people tend to not value accuracy boosts all that much in competitive (at least not to the point of taking up a move slot).

Actually you are wrong with the boost. Competitive Pokémon it’s not use because well human smart however against Ai it’s much easier. A +1 with terralization gurantees a one hit KO unless it’s a Pokémon that resists the move and has the defenses to match. Basically put yes you waste one turn but tempo leans towards your side heavily during battle against Ai since you gurantee one hit Ko on everything even tanky Pokémon and if they send a counter that is not tanky you kill it. There’s also you know the exploits of doing a set up when they heal lol. As for boost not being used in competitive that’s not entirely true. Dragon dance, Geomancy, power up punch, and swords dance have been used. All these set up moves but Geomancy were used in older formats though where that +1 can gain you tempo or one sword dancing scizzor can wipe an entire team in one hit with bullet punch and those that resisted it it can survive and take it out. If we are talking about Geomancy………..that move is so busted that even to this day Xearnes was still meta because of that move.Basically put if you want to use boost move it’s to have tempo on later turns. Doesn’t mean every Pokémon should have one just use them wisely
@eeihral Жыл бұрын
Don't get me wrong: DD, Geomancy, and Swords Dance are indeed very strong. Power-Up Punch on Mega Kangaskhan being a free SD while maintaining offensive pressure was also busted. I'm only refering to moves that boost a single stat, and only boost it by +1 not being used in competitive. Things like Sharpen, Defense Curl, Meditate; all those. Other, stronger boosting moves are used pretty much at least once every battle in competitive.
@sparkex4 Жыл бұрын
@@eeihral yeah i get what you mean I just wanted to bring to attention that just having a +1 isn’t that bad if you can set up correctly and a little bit of history with boosting moves in competitive Pokémon. In the end of the day however it boils down to team synsergy and strategy. Right now my Team is highly speedy and aggressive so a tank Pokémon can bring trouble so setting up earlier helps in the future in case they have one. However it’s interesting that boosting moves need to be very high value otherwise people won’t use it in competitive. I feel like this is also true in play through though. But if find that opening to get that free +1 oh man it feels good knowing that barely nothing gets in the way. But again it all comes down to team comp and team synergy so do what you believe is best
