In fact, Japan gets a lot of side episodes around Ash's former traveling companions that never get released internationally. It's actually incredibly difficult to *_NOT_* know about Pokemon-related stuff at this point. Like, even I, who only played the original gen and watched maybe half of the first season back when it first aired, have absorbed a bunch of useless Pokemon info through cultural osmosis. As such, Enna's lack of knowledge is indeed rare and precious.

Yeah that's what makes it so shocking for me: there is absolutely no way I can imagine she was able to miss people talking about it in anime circles on twitter or any conventions she may have been at or anywhere anime topics are discussed. Even if she, personally, didn't care for it and wasn't exposed to it as a kid, I have to imagine she encountered it at some point. Selen even mentioned how tons of people were getting hyped for the new Pokémon game, and Elira, her coworker, made tweets about it. Heck, her IRL friend in Millie seems to be a well-established Pokémon fan based on the streams I've seen from her. The fact that some people close to her like Pokémon to that extent makes it even more shocking that she is so in the dark of basic Pokémon knowledge. All of it made for such wild comedy, though. I really can't wait for a collab like this for real, hearing Enna's reaction to all sorts of basic Pokémon knowledge. 😆

Omg I relate to Enna so hard in this. I wasn't allowed to have video game consoles until I was 14 so I didn't grow up with the games, and I was banned from watching it on TV because my parents viewed pokemon battles as some weird form of animal cruelty LOL. So by the time I was old enough to have more control over what I could and couldn't do, pokemon just looked childish and dumb to me as a 16 year old who didn't have it as an intricate part of their childhood!

The everpresence of pokemon could be more of NA thing? Depending on where she was raised pokemon may have been not that popular among her peers. I'm from EastEu, and while we had and still do pokemon on tv, show seemed very boring, there was no money for console or even any particular market (can't recall ever seeing a console ad), and none of my peers mentioned playing it either (probably due to previous point). All pokemon knowledge I have was absorbed through internets off-handed remarks which is only slightly more that Enna has - team rocket exist and they're funny villains, ash is eternally 10 and wants to catch em all, region and companions change 3very season + like 5 more pokemon names.

i too didn't grew up on watching or playing pokemon. I think i was more interested in watching and playing yu gi oh when both are commonly showed on TV in our country before. I also got interested more in manga reading and watching all other animes except pokemon. Sorry, it did look like for the kids when i was already 17 so it never catch me. Then YT app in phones became a thing, and i still didn't really followed Pokemon. lol
