As a chemist it is strange to watch someone dipping the ph paper into his solution. Dont do it like that, you will get the ph paper stuff into your solution and your ph reading isnt as accurate because you are wet soaking the paper. Use something like a glass rod to dip into your solution and put what ever stays on the rod onto the ph paper - much better way without contaminating your solution. Really liking the project though!

Instead of a thin mil coating that might not offer full or robust coverage, I'll probably just buy the cylinders and use additive nano powders of BN, Graphene, and TiC (2D ceramic sheet MAXene materials). I'm thinking that any silicate dust, amorphous carbon deposits, or metal burrs that make their way into your cylinder region will be pretty hard on the soft supporting nickel matrix. Instead of Nikasil, you could also look into ion beam deposition (form of PVD) of a bonding layer like AlTiN, with a thicker chemical vapor deposition layer of diamond-like carbon over top (all parts can be coated this way). I may make the cylinders out of Hastelloy C (low thermal conductivity + superalloy resistance) or a titanium alloy if I take this approach over Al2O3/TiCN/SiC/SiN/ZrN/CrN cylinders (wide variety of ceramics suitable).

IF that leak down tester is one of the cheaper ones on ebay and the likes, its junk, well, the regulator part is junk, it has so much hysteresis you cannot get a reliable and consistent reading to compare between cylinders. Im a mechnic for a living and bought one to replace a snap-on one I drove over .. ended up buying another snap on one. if you replace the regulator with a quality part, it should work as intended. Also a DIY vacuum leak tester is very easy to make with a variable power supply, gauge, and an automotive 12v vacuum pump(for brake servos) .. I use the latter to test valve and piston sealing with the head off. very handy for troubleshooting a dismantled engine. just found your channel today :)

I don't remember if you said it in the last one but... you couldn't use wax to mask it? And btw when painting something, even for masking, give it a coat and let it sit till it gets tacky (sticky) to the touch then hit it with another coat and repeat until you get to the thickness you want. Just continuing to spray more paint on it while it's wet isn't going to do anything but make it run as the weight of the paint overcomes the grip on the part. Oh and btw I messed up on my comment about heating the nitric acid it doesn't make dinitrogen (I was thinking of dinitrogen tetroxide) it makes nitrogen dioxide when you warm it up too much and it makes that red/brown gas. It can also make nitrogen trioxide too. Either you need to figure out a way to fill those holes or a recast needs to happen. It might be down to the alloy you used to cast or the plaster casting, I don't know but those holes definitely need to go. I wonder if you could do plaster for the passageways and do a sand cast for the exterior or if that'd be too much work. I'd be tempted to fill it with copper like they do with chrome and then do the nickel over the copper once the holes are filled.

@oikkuoek4 жыл бұрын
How about this: You build up the zinc for filling the holes, then hone it to shine, then start the process from the beginning. If the zinc layer is sufficient, You can even try to skip the zinc bath part. Just because Zinc is malluable, but Nikasil is not. The final plating sufrace is not designed to be honed at all.

@oikkuoek4 жыл бұрын
@@MeanOldBastardBikerBob Those pits can be used as anchor points for the galvanized zinc/Nikasil sleeve. No press sleeve needed. @MeanOldBastardBikerBob4 жыл бұрын

I worked for a company years ago(1980s) that chrome plated their 2-stroke engines. (Plated, not Nikasil). A small percentage of porosity was acceptable and desirable to allow for some retention of oil on the cylinder walls. I agree that the pores observed in this cylinder appear to be too large though.

Would there be a big disadvantage to plate everything and skip all the masking?
@jram70474 жыл бұрын
Just like sending something to powdercoat it would effect all dimensions, additionally it would take significantly longer and use far more material, the liquids he is using are essentially saturated with the mixture and the amount it would take to do an entire jug would probably do 10 cylinder walls. Its also hard to guarantee on dealing surfaces without machine work that they would seal the same as the material can be tricky when coating. That's why he is honing the cylinder

Concrete dust removed some lining around my intake port window… I’ve been scratching my head and I’m wondering if I could bake a little layer or epoxy or something over the area instead of just a grease??? Ceramic coating would be neat possibly???

A word of caution: We found that thee anvil micrometers were OK for loosely toleranced parts, but not bearing or cylinder bores. They tend to average out a bore and make it look round. A dial bore micrometer will show you taper and roundness, the three anvil will not :(

I wonder if doing this process "inside out" (i.e. sealing the cylinder top and fulling it with plating solution from the bottom) would work for newer hard-to rebuild engines that some from the factory with nikisil coatings... There are a few engines we unable to hotrod as a result. Would be a huge breakthrough.

Sure, you'd have to pump it through from a larger container tho, needs to move to keep the particles in suspension.
