Nike Alphafly Next% full review is now available here on the channel, after 72 miles of testing in time trials, track workouts, and even a marathon virtual race. The Nike Alphafly Next% is a marathon racing shoe for the runner out there that who is looking for plenty of bounce in their stride, but absolutely no ground contact feel. Overall, the Nike Alphafly Next% is a special racing shoe, the resilience of the ZoomX midsole foam and the AirPods on the forefoot may not be as high as I'd like. I noticed a reduction in bounce through the foot strike after the 50-mile mark. We shall see how they hold up over the long haul. Lots of innovation in the Nike Alphafly Next% marathon racing shoe, and yes of course, there is a carbon fiber plate inside that huge stack height.

I'm definitely looking forward to trying these shoes out. Not because they are possibly the best marsthon shoe, but because of how different they are. Granted 2020 has been a year of trying other brands than Nike, but these shoes are just so inovative.

Dumb comment. You buy one, wear it and then replace it when you need to. The amount of time you wear each one wears down the same rate.

My vote for these shoes: After a major injury to my tibia I've had to stop running. impact pain was so painful it'd leave my leg swollen and burning for several days after trying to run in my daily running shoes. After 6 years of not being able to run I took a chance on these shoes and put in a mile with mild pain and no lasting pain after the run. For someone with pain on impact the sole on these shoes is amazing. I also appreciate the wide toe/ball landing because it keeps me balanced whereas in other shoes I'd roll to one side of my foot for pain avoidance. I couldn't be happier! Thanks for your thorough reviews!

If it’s deteriorating after only 70 miles, at this cost... how does one get familiar with the shoe before the race without using up those scarce and expensive miles

Yes that is precisely my concern as well! The price tag on the Vapourflys is disgustingly high! I would only pay 250Euro for the Alphafly version that Eliud Kipchoge wore in Vienna, the one with 3 plates and 4 Airpods I think.

JoyRidaz that’s just the nature of Zoom Z . The foam will actually crease just trying them on and walking in them . It is a tough pill to swallow for just a racing shoe as I only own the next % . They are amazing shoes though .

CookiePuss81 there are creases in the foam out of the box before you even try them on so I don’t think creases are necessarily indicative of a decrease in responsiveness.

For marathons: I signed up for Chicago and I have a very bad gut feeling. It's far away, but in their last email they didn't let the folks to cancel. You can only cancel (defer) your entry, but you'd loose all your registration money! With a race being that far, I'm disappointed, because there's a reasonable chance it won't be held.

Nice full review! I'm skeptical about anyone else being able to get through the issues with a patent to get something air pod like. They have had a lot of years to crack that Nike Air code and it just hasn't happened. Think there's a better chance of someone like New Balance making an outstanding foam attempt. QOTD: Hard to tell if it there will be any major marathons this year. Hope you and your family are doing well.

QD: I think the issue with marathons is more in the planning stages and setting it up, permits, etc. There are also some unknowns regarding the virus and what things will look like down the road months from now. My guess is most of these major events that need to be planned many months in advance will be postponed. I do not think a vaccine will be needed for events to start. Given recent studies showing possibly 20% of NYC was already infected, several months from now that number will be higher and a vaccine may not even be needed (though I'm sure/hope they will still be working on one).

QD: My gut feeling is that Berlin is the fist of the World Major Marathons to postpone that are scheduled later in the year. Boston and London have already postponed and rescheduled to September/October. I don’t believe that mass gatherings like we see at big city marathons will be allow till 2021 so I think the 2020 running of Boston and London will unfortunately not happen. Berlin may postpone till northern hemisphere spring and have two editions in 2021. I am from Australia and currently have Melbourne Marathon marked as goal marathon for 2020 however it appears that Australian Government is indicating that mass gatherings are a “long way off” so I don’t believe that a marathon even in October is likely. For me that means that Plan B will be to either run Melbourne Marathon on the rescheduled date or look to Hobart Marathon in January 2021 or Canberra Marathon in April 2021 as alternative Australian based marathons. Of course I am hoping that all marathon later this year can go ahead but only if they do not pose a health risk of virus spread if they are staged. Guess we will all have to partake in more DGR virtual races for the foreseeable future.

QD: about 2 or 3 weeks ago I realized that all major fall marathons will be canceled. WA doesn't even allow athletes try to make the Olympic qualification results before December 1. In my opinion, Spring 2021 marathons might take place but before that there will only be small races. Btw, Frank Ruby contacted adidas before he contacted Nike in the 70s and pitched the Air technology. Adidas was not interested. Nike owns the technology now because Phil Knight got interested when he heard that adidas had not been fascinated about it. He went for a run and thought there might be something in that technology. Rest is history.

Baltsu true. I wonder where the patents stand now though.... how do you patent air 😉
@baltsu
@baltsu 4 жыл бұрын
@@SethJamesDeMoor there has been lawsuits where Nike has alleged Skechers copying and therefore infridging company's air technology patents. I am not familiar with those patents but for example in the Vaporfly Nike had patented even the shape of the carbon plate. That means that if the benefit that the runner gets came from the shape of the plate and if the WA decided that every athlete should be entitled to those benefits then Nike would probably need to let other manufacturers to license its patent. In the mobile phone industry all companies own thousands of patents worth billions of dollars and every single phone sold includes some kind of license fee payments to other manufacturers because none of the companies developed all key components, technologies or features themselved.

coming out of the box, seth was overjoyed. QD:i think races could occur, but only in limited form: 10k on Friday, Half on Sat, Full marathon on Sun. You'd obviously have a to stagger the starting times and limit the amount of people. As for people avoiding each other while running, it happens everyday on the local trails. Marathon organizers should choose a city's widest street with entry points to the starting occuring on streets on both sides of this widest street. People would likely be in aline that wraps 4 blocks down, but no biggie.

Great review. Thanks for the content. I hope the season gets started sooner than later once it's figured out how to get a large amount of people together with out risk. Maybe closed events or staggered start times. I'm sure there are a lot of options. As for the Alphafly...price for durability is going to be interesting to see over time. Clearly the next% paved the way for this shoe, so you know it's going to sell. But adding Zoom pods on a racing shoe built for marathons only adds questions on the alphaflys durability. I would be curious to see where this shoe tops out in terms of miles run. For that price is it worth it for 150miles vs a shoe that might be half the price but adds weight but last longer.

I've noticed this with Nike shoes that have this technology of wide forefoot+stack height and narrow mid to rear heal, that they tend to pronate more than many older technology shoes. I can actually see it in your video's when you focus on the shoe as you run toward the camera. As a result, I was noticing my foot taking on a new type of stress load and it took awhile for me to adjust to these Nike type shoes. I also own the Fly 3's and Vaporfly Next %. So, that to me resonates into a slightly more unstable and clunky shoe, albeit fast though. My feet felt worked a bit more early in training and testing of the Fly 3's for sure. When I ran my DGR Half last weekend, I was happy to have ran in the Vaporlfy Next %, as My feet/legs felt fresh after and the next day as well. Was almost tempted to run in my Sketcher Horizon Vanish but glad I didn't, as my feet and legs would have been beat up more after.

Higher off the ground and unstable wasn't something that bothered me until I sprained my ankle on a turn that left me out of action for 2 months! User error is of course noted, but even with the regulations on stack height being < 40mm, I feel like there is room for innovation in maintaining (or even improving) the energy return without compromising on the stability, adding to the stake height.

I think people just become used to the sensation of the Alphaflys and other shoes similar to this. I doubt they've lost most of their responsiveness after only 70 miles. The first time you try on a shoe like this their sensation is new so you're immediately aware and ultra-sensitive to it. After 70 miles, you're used to it so it probably doesn't feel like they're as responsive. All shoes lose responsiveness over time, but I doubt it's as severe as you think. Also, the last time you ran in them you admitted your legs were dead, so a lot of that could have been your legs and not the shoes not feeling as springy. You have to give energy to receive it. If your legs aren't pushing off as forcefully, the shoes aren't going to return the energy they would if your legs were fresh.

I bought these... the front black outsole is not really rubber, it is more like foam.. wears way faster. I think the idea is stupid that any pair of running shoes is not for daily use. If so it should have clear mark on the packaging or label.

@Seth James DeMoor Nice video as usual! More than 200 Euro for a running shoe that is meant to go just about 2 marathons is an absolute disgrace to running! Advertising the shoe so heavily to everyone and then putting a ridiculous price tag on it, is where Nike lost me. Furthermore, they seem to take the vapor fly series here in Europe of the shelves early, even though they do have a substantial amount of stock left, just to keep the price tag up and not including them in the seasonal sales!
@jackosparrow4476

So true! I have been running in nikes for years now and have mostly enjoyed them, but yes the marketing strategy for the Vaporfly was definitely a cheeky one. What put me off though is that they tell you that they made the worlds fastest and best running shoe, however you can only run in it if you have that much money to spend. Honestly the materials used are innovative but don't come even close to that price tag. To me it seems like follows: Me: I would like to purchase the Vapourfly's. Nike: Great decision sir! These are the fastest and lightest max cushioned shoe's you could hope for! That will make 250Euro. Me: Sorry I only have 160Euro. Nike: Le me see what I can do ... (They dip in in concrete) ... Ok I have here a similar but more affordable model, the Zoom-Fly. Me: (Walks away) They literally made the Zoom_Fly's a knockdown version of the Vaporflys - a slower more heavier version for the working class.

No water absorption on the upper is good, but wouldent water from cups, or rain, or puddles go through and get your sock and inner sole with that "meshy" a upper. where as a little extra upper could make the water run off more.

I think that we're going to see a cold marathon season in the fall. The move Poland to October. I'm pretty sure that October in Poland is cold. I think that all the shoe releases will be delayed due to the companies moving manufacturing out of China and due to the delayed major races. I don't know that they're moving manufacturing, but it would be a good marketing move for them.

QD: My instinct for 2020 is only select areas will be able to have races with strict permits from local authority. Races will have much smaller entrance limits. Smaller wave starts. Course support will require PPE. No water stations (bring your own hydration and nutrition). No Expo or Finish line celebrations. Packet pickup and medals will not be done in person. With all this it makes the challenge for race directors to even consider having races.......

QOD: I think some will be postponed (smaller ones), but for major events I think it will be cancelled until next year. There should be more virtual events, or even just cancel spectator watching and do segmented racing with smaller groups. Shoe companies should take full advantage as runners are. The price for these are steep. 275?!..like really Nike? A racing shoe should never exceed 200. That should be the top. If Nile did a mass sell, set the price to to even 220..they would sell like crazy. I would certainly buy them for that price. Everybody is at a home buying online, this would be the perfect time to go on sale.

Hi Seth! I´ve been running with the first vaporfly 4% and also the next%. My first ever impression from the zoomX sole was that it made a different sound than a normal rubber. If you tap it it´s almost echoe. Did you ever notice that? Sounds almost like they added some light gas (helium or hydrogyn) into the mixing of the foam instead of air. It´s probably a deep secret. But listen to it, its so weird.

My gut is that no major marathons will take place this year 😢 event organisers need to make a decision at least 2 months prior to the event. With social distances it will not just end. It will be phased and i cant see non essential foreign travel being permitted for a long while. I think Nike will hold the general release of the alpha fly until Feb 2021 😲

Anticipating the comparison between the Alphafly and the Next %: Bashir Abdi, a marathoner who recently ran 02.04:49 in the Tokio Marathon (one of the last races that happened before the lockdown) said during a ‘facebook live’ of a Belgian sports channel that, only after two trainings sessions, he has decided that, although he is sponsored by Nike, he will not use the Alphafly as a marathon racing shoe. He says he feels that his ankle ‘shifts’ too much while running and that he feels not stable enough in the shoe to go over 26 miles. Although I am not 100 procent sure, I think that he ran in the Next % in Tokio.

QD: sadly, it's pretty much over. I think it's ridiculous that races cannot be run, the real issue should be the crowds around the registration tables before the start and after the races but assuming you could control that there's no reason not to run the races. On a separate note I think if you focus and choose to do so, you could and will crush the Pikes Peak Marathon this year. It's your race to lose, Seth!! Well, assuming they run it. Have people only allowed in the starting area for 15 min as well as in the finishing area. I know you are going to complain to me about massages and ceremonies or whatever but these are out.
