During the cold war, for three years, I was a Team Commander for a German Nike Hercules battery, Your video reminded me of those times. We gave the Germans the missiles, but we couldn't give them the nuclear warheads, so the US sent Nuclear Warhead Teams to Germany to assemble the warheads, mount them on the missiles, and provide security for them. We also had to unlock the warheads before the Germans could fire them.

Thank you Robert for the tour of the Nike Base. FYI, My son worked for the NPS and was the one responsible for locating, acquiring and having the Nike Missile delivered to the HM -69 Site for the public to enjoy. There was quite a lot of publicity about the missile arrival, as it was transported through Miami and Homestead. Life Magazine even came out and did a photo shoot of my son and the missile base. I believe to goal was to have the missile base set up in time for the Oct 2012 50th Anniversary of the Cuban Missile Crises.

Thank your son for us old Army guys who worked at these missile defense sites. I was stationed at the last working US site near Key Key Largo and helped to turn it off and dismantle it before transfer to Germany where these missiles were armed with nuclear warheads.

These sites were all over our country in the early sixties to defend against aircraft attack. Today we have no real defense.

You took me back, Robertico. Dad used to take me out to East Everglades back in the late 60s and early 70s during deer season. I remember an Army station nicknamed the "Hole in the Wall" , after the Army abandoned it and was subsequently used for target practice by the public.. Thumbs up!

Water table in the glades was too high. Missile launchers had to be on the surface. The fire control panel was located in a bunker inside the berm surrounding the launchers. I was stationed there in the seventies

I would say mosquitos are a huge issue in 'all' parts of the everglades, especially in the summer. That swampy water is notorious for breeding them.
