The passion of the NPS Rangers for what they do is astounding. Reminds me of many of the teachers I've met over the years... not paid or appreciated nearly enough, yet they continue doing what they love to the benefit of us all.

Nice video. I biked here in August 2011. Very nice place. However I can't believe the U.S. federal government has let the observation tower and rest rooms get so bad. They can't afford to hire someone to use bleach and a pressure washer?

Note the road and bike path that is there is not used very much. There is no reason to build another bike path for 75 miles over nature, and Everglades. This video shows that there are places you can bike in the Everglades, and they are not used to much to date. Stop paving over paradise, and use what we have. Stop ROGG! I'm disappointed with this place, the jacked up the prices horribly and they are going to do it again. and there is no maintenance done to justify the prices, don't bother renting a bike because you will get some rigged up piece of junk + $35 to enter.. not worth the 600 mosquito bites and waterless bathrooms that also happen to not have light. you will probably regret it. I use to be a frequent visitor but I will be looking for other places to ride
@dianesalino4457
@dianesalino4457 5 жыл бұрын
Take heart. Try to think of The Everglades as a cross between a once-primitive, pristine wilderness-- and a site that provides the gift of accessibility and observation for humans-- an insider's look into a something worlds apart from our whims and luxuries. Moreover, if "maintenance" is what you're after, focus on a cow gator's nest -- a marvel in engineering, construction, security and maintenance that shelters gator eggs and hatchlings. If it's a designer bicycle you want, you're always welcome to purchase, transport and mount your own. Barring that extravagance, you can WALK the trails (when not running like hell from that mother gator) -- or tour Shark Valley via tram (Warning: Trams NOT equipped with designer cocktail bars). If it's the legendary Everglades Mosquito that plagues you-- well, cannot fathom why you would be the ONE person in every "600" who'd be taken by surprise when swarmed by these INFAMOUS critters. BTW: No mosquito problems in winter, during Dry Season--which is THE season for touring The Everglades. As for the absence of water & light in bathrooms: Same problems in Times Square, annually, on New Year's Eve (aside from which, Shark Valley's fish, turtles, gators and wading birds would beg to differ re: those so-called "waterless" bathrooms); and to suggest that you can't find your way around your own 'anatomy' in dark places is just... well... tragic. Finally, yes-- there ARE alternatives to biking in The Everglades-- one option being the Tour de France; and the other, via a series of very tight, calculated, climate-controlled circles around Trump's Oval Office. SPOILER ALERT: BYO Caviar, friends.

I can't tell if the first park rangers is a really effeminate man or really manly woman?
@dianesalino4457
@dianesalino4457 5 жыл бұрын
SERIOUSLY, Jamie ??? Nice video of an astoundingly-beautiful place. Amazing variety of flora and fauna -- and an insider's view to an Everglades that is now merely a tragic, bittersweet tribute to all it once was -- a pristine, flourishing, bountiful river system -- now reduced to one of the most corrupted, compromised regions on the planet. I oughta' know. I lived and worked there, guiding ecotours. No easy task, to wax on about the beauty that met the eye-- while haunted, simultaneously, by the underlying truth re: the struggle for survival in what is now a Death Row for wildlife inhabitants. The Everglades has been polluted by the Big Sugar industry and its sycophant profiteer loyalists-- parched, as it's water supply is diverted and depleted to provide fresh water for overdeveloped populated regions-- and, as a result, has long-suffered the enormous loss of support and sustenance for native wildlife. All this, Jamie -- and what YOU come away with is the question of whether the "first park ranger" is a man or a woman ?????Should you ever come to unravel the mystery of those "Dick And Jane" children's stories, make your next complex endeavor a trip to The Everglades. Pay a visit to the Miccosukee Indian villages that surround Shark Valley. Ask any tribal native which question matters more -- i.e., Is it the question of when, why & how The Miccosukee// Seminole people were robbed of home, culture, and a life-sustaining river that died by the arrogant, greedy, corrupt hands (descendants) of America's FIRST Illegal Immigrants??? -- Or rather, is it the question of whether the ranger featured in the video was male or female in gender????? Okay-- so yeah, this post seems like an angry, endless, Blowhard, Purple Prose answer to a short, simple, "innocent" question; but it's the kind of thinking (or lack thereof) BEHIND that question that's got us all so screwed up-- to the extent that we're more exited about the latest pulse-reading tech toys than we are terrified about losing our BLOOD-driven collective pulse to the inevitable, disastrous effects of climate change... … … and this, perhaps, is how the mice, the "meek" and The Miccosukee shall inherit the earth, after all. BTW, Darwin-- Your first clue re: the ranger's gender was right there up front, when SHE introduced HERself by name -- i.e., "LAURIE." "Laurie" is feminine-- whereas, "LARRY" would be masculine. Both are to be distinguished from the "LORI"keet (a type of parrot) -- and thereafter, distinguished again from the legendary comedy team known as "LAUREL & Hardy." There you have it. Feeling better, now? Sincerely, "VAL." [ Sorry. You'll just have to figure that "Val" thing out on your own ]
