KIGER 7 REVIEW: • NIKE TERRA KIGER 7 REV...
The new Nike Trail Wildhorse 7 is a rugged and protective beast from Nike Trail that is very similar to the 6th version. Really where you're going to see the biggest difference is in the more breathable mesh of the upper. It's still chonky, it is still a decent all-around trainer and will make a lot of runners happy. But between the Kiger 7 and Wildhorse 7, which would I prefer? Let's dive in!

I ran about 350miles in the 6 and I'm around 100 miles into the 7. They have been my overall favorite running shoe! NO complaints on either of them. I haven't been able to find a trail show that comes close. I have used them in mud and wet situations and they seem fine, mostly run on dry technical trails.

First of all my compliments for your KZbin channel I love it! , about the Nike Wildhorse 7; first of all I love the colorway (yellow) and I really enjoy the fit; comfortable with a nice bounce. I’m 6’2 and way about 191lb. Yesterday I went for a 8km trail run on a very wet horse riding track in the woods. The track is a mix of sand, dirt and some small wood pieces. No issues here but because my (new) shoes became really dirty I decided to run the last 500m in the water on the little beach we have there. Because the sand is really fine it happened to get inside the shoe in between the rubber toe protector and the sock. (gusseted tongue). The sand goes thru the upper mesh because that’s a course mesh and then builds up in the font of the shoe. It can’t go anywhere because on the inside the in-liner is a very fine mesh and the outside is the rubber protector. Every step I took the sand builds up more and shoe became smaller and smaller in size. Luckily it was at the end of my run because I wouldn’t be able to run any further. At home I rinsed it out with a garden hose. I also noticed the shoes where really heavy when wet.

I have a little over 60 miles in the wildhorse 7 now and I find them to be a solid shoe. Caveats are: I don't mind a heavier shoe if it is more comfortable and more durable. My preferred road/treadmill shoe is a Nike React Miler as a for instance. I'm not competing, I'm just a casual runner getting out 3 times a week for general health (physical and mental). The Wildhorse delivers all the things I like about the React Miler but has more traction on the trail, is more built up, and, contrary to your experience, I've found the ankle gaiter keeps the trail debris out much better than the Miler. Also worth noting, I'm running north Florida trails so there are hills and roots but it's not overly technical or steep and I only run outside if the conditions are dry so the wet grip issues haven't come up for me. If it's wet, I'll put on the React Milers and treadmill run instead. If I were braving all conditions or more technical trails, some of the negatives of the shoe might bother me, but for my more casual tendencies, they do the job I bought them for, keep my run very comfortable with the React foam, and will likely last me a long time due to the build quality so I have no complaints.

I really like my Wildhorse 6. Like you said, it's slipper-like and kinda disappears on the run. So I take it out for my relaxed runs when I don't want to think about anything. It's the ideal cruisershoe, both on and off trail. But like you said, best in dry conditions and easier terrain. Just cruisin' along...

I own a pair and they've been my first trail shoes. I love how waterproof or water-repellent they are (have no idea how I jumped into a river and didn't feel my shoes all wet) and in general they're very comfortable. I haven't tried other shoe brands but I have slipped a lot in mud and on wet rocks. I also twisted my ankle running on a small stone road, but I guess that would've happened with any shoe type.

I have the Wildhorse 7 - 42km after two runs. From my initial impressions: Type of runs best suited: Long, slow cruising miles on hard-packed trail. Commuter - door to trail. Stability: I'm predominately a mid-foot striker and even more so on trial and have not had any stability concerns in the slightest. Both of my 21km runs have been on hard-packed dirt, grass, and pavement. I've not taken it on technical trails yet or mud. Lug depth is 5mm which on paper is great but I suspect it won't be very tacky on wet rock. Upper: The new mesh is much more breathable than the previous version but can still get a little hot over long distances. I've had no issues with the in-built gaiter. It does its job and doesn't get in the way. Padding on the tongue is one of the best I've felt. Midsole: Comfort - 10/10 Fit: Good lockdown. No heel slippage. True to size. Durability: No issues so far.

@@Bikesands Its not the best for me for distances over 50k. I usually just stick with speedgoats for long long distances, but for some reason in that moment I chose the sense ride. It all worked out at the end of the day. Still ended up getting a new pair of speedgoats for the 82 mile out and back I did on the Maryland section of the AT this past Thursday. I own these and completely agree with this review. Shoe works great in preventing dirt and water from getting stuck in the shoe. Overall my feet are generally cleaner after trail running with these than my other shoes. My biggest complaint is stability. The general construction of the shoe is sock-like therefore it takes more skill to be able to control your foot placement on tougher terrain. Ive twisted my ankle every time I’ve downhill with these, sometimes multiple times. Giving up stability makes the shoe more comfortable and breathable keeping the feet feeling good on those longer trail runs.

Just tried it after a dusting of snow in cold weather (20s). I loved it (usually not into Nikes), however I agree it’s not best on icy patches. On the dusting and dirt, it was fine. Ran in the Wildhorse 6 and was highly unimpressed with the stability. It was by far my biggest gripe. The grip on these is dangerous. My last run I slipped (but didn't fall) on some stone pavement where someone had been hosing it down. Jogged very carefully from then on until I stepped into a shady patch which was still a bit damp - soon as I stepped into the shade my footing was GONE - hit my head and knee quite hard. I've gone back and tested the same conditions with my skate shoes (Globes with standard flat tread) and the surfaces weren't slippery in those - with the Nike's the surface is like walking on ice. I originally bought these as a casual hiking shoe but I don't even trust the grip for walking now. Forget about using these in the UK where it is damp for the majority of the year.

The WH6 /was/ my goto trail shoe, putting over 300 miles on my pair. I say /was/ because I broke my ankle (not shoe-related) and post-recovery they just felt too unstable around the heel over rocky ground, or tree roots, or things like that. Not issues I felt before my accident. I have the lovely yellow WH7 sitting unused in their box, not sure if I'll even try them or just pass them on. Man. I wanted so much to like these shoes. Felt decent on the floor in the store. On the trail is another story. So much slopping around in there. The cushion is deep enough to banana your foot if you are a mid to forefoot strike. A true heel striker would probably love this one. Worst downhill shoe I’ve worn. No matter how I tried to lace, the downhill single track was the WORST in this shoe. I guess I’m going back to my Peregrines.

Trail shoes today. Odd the companies still haven't got with the program in making a proper trail running shoe. They look like they aren't really spending the time to develop better does but just grabbing existing shoe tech from other shoes. It's not hard to engineer a proper trail runner.. the sole--tire company tread that's proven in the dry and the WET. So many performance tires out there that do just that. Shoe companies need to start talking to Yokohama, Goodyear, Pierelli...etc. Upper--talk to GORE-TEX for a waterproof upper. 3M--for reflectivity. ...the rest the shoe companies have the tech... Why do we still not have such a trail running shoe? Or even in a pavement shoe...just with a tread design for the road. Why not have a road shoe that has grip in the wet? And has a waterproof upper?? There are "trail shoes" with GoreTEX from Merrel, Solomon....but arent "running shoes"...they're hiking shoes. There needs to be a meeting of the minds. Merrel trail shoe = Nike Pegasus 38!! w/ Pierelli tire tread!!

I've got both - I found the pegasus trail lighter and more comfortable but the grip is the same (dangerous is wet or damp weather). The wild horse feels like it allows too much flex in the cushioning too (like it would make it easier to twist your ankle) while the pegasus is more predictable. I'm keeping the pegasus for walking around cities in dry weather, but going to get rid of these. For wet surfaces the grip on both is terrible - go for a brand that has a well known sole on it (vibram, contigrip or maybe continental)

The WH5 is lightyears more stable and predictable than either the WH6&7 (also the lightest version since the WH3). HOWEVER, the WH4 is still peak Wildhorse due to A) a roomier toebox, WH5 was too restrictive; B) WH4 asymmetric lacing and midfoot wrap are vastly superior to any version before or since. Both shoes suffered from the midsole compound lacking a bit of softer forefoot cushion for longer runs, but the ZoomAir heel with its firmer surround gave both astounding cushion and stability, which Nike exactly reversed in the newer version, creating an ankle-breaking mess as a result.

The Wildhorse has become a lame horse for the last 3 versions! After a pair of 5s died a death within 300km of use (upper started to shred) I shot my lame wildhorse and took up with La Sportivas and haven't looked back. If you have a narrow foot, the Italian's will do you justice ;-)

Too bad Nike doesn’t do a wide. I though the wild horse 6 was a good looking shoe I wanted to run in.

I have a hard time lacing up my Nikes after learning about Mary Cain. Never buying their shoes again.

We get it, the Nike Trail line SUCKS. Not that I was ever attracted to it, mind you :D but after this review and Run4Adventure on the Terra Kiger I'm like "why do they even exist?" sounds like most regular shoes for asphalt could do the job as well or possibly better than these two crap shoes :D Nike, if you're reading I've got something to whisper in your ear: VIBRAM MEGAGRIP!

@@karlmaxweber Heel lockdown is almost non existent. The gaiters has the opposite effect of what it's supposed to do. The laces put a ton of pressure on your metatarsal bones when trying to get good midfoot lockdown. The rubber is more than iffy on wet rocks. The cushion is too soft to be stable on anything other than super smooth, packed dirt trail, roads, or fine gravel. I could feel the rock plate jamming into the bottom of my feet through the cushion to the point that it got painful after 5 miles. The upper may be more breathable than previous versions, but it still gets pretty hot and the material they use picks up a ton of weight when it gets wet.

@@thebigtoboggin6982 Totally agree. The rear half of this shoe is a disaster: I have to watch every step to avoid landing on a rock as it is so unstable. The lacing system is just bad: On my high-arch left foot I have to skip several eyelets due to top-of-foot pain from the upper. Bring back the WH4 asymmetric lacing, that provided amazing lockdown with no lacing pain! A couple positives I have for the WH6/7 is the toebox area which is nicely shaped, just wide enough for splay and just high enough to avoid toebumping (a problem on the WH5 in particular); forefoot cushion is the best ever for this model, but lacks precision due to the rounded outsole shape, which is easily addressed. I just ordered the VJ Ultra, which I expect to be superior to any of these Nike trail offerings.

Totally disagree. One of the best shoes I’ve ever owned. To each their own.
