How to prepare vegetable garden beds in spring

I cover my beds with shredded leaves in the fall. This week I removed the leaves revealing a lovely bed of dark, uncompacted soil underneath. I won’t till it, but I have several buckets of homemade compost to add to the soil where I’ll be planting. I will wait until the wind storm passes before setting up my mini-hoop tunnel!

Hi thats a good idea. Do you have a problem with slugs breeding under the leaves though?

I do have slugs, but last year they did not seem as active.

Awesome Dave! I had leaf mulched a few beds too. Good to remove it early as the leaves keep the soil frozen :)

Hi, thanks for asking! My radio show returns on Sunday May 3rd from 11- 1 pm (AT) and that will be broadcast live on News 95.7 FM as well as their website. And they do keep some older shows on the website too. Sadly, they don't post all of them as podcasts and while I'd love to do a podcast, I would need more hours in the day :) I will definitely be sharing more videos and have some on my website SavvyGardening.com's youtube channel too :) Thanks again!

Great question! Here is the link for the NS soil test lab with the info... you can buy testing kits at garden centers but this is really the same price and far more accurate. I believe it's closed right now due to the virus, but when it reopens you can send off a sample. novascotia.ca/agri/documents/lab-services/analytical-lab-soil-analysis.pdf
