I remember watching this at Couran Cove Resort on Stradbroke Island, where a lot of the Olympians from around the world were staying. Teams from Germany, Ireland and a few others were there, and we watched it on the big screen, with many of the athletes calling their friends who were at the Opening Ceremony. Back in 2000 the Cold War was over, 9/11 hadn't happened, and the economy was doing well...we were in the first months of the 3rd Millennium, and the future seemed bright. This was a good night. A calm before the storm.

To me, I think what makes this performance so sweet and heartfelt, aside from Nikki's voice and wholesome lyrics, are seeing the Aboriginal people listening and slowly dancing to the song as this song is for hoping for a better future and being together with the ones you love and since the Aboriginal people have been through so much, it's something they definitely wanted to hear as despite the awful things they went through, there is still hope and they can pull through.

I love that song! It really resonates what the Olympics are all about. It's a great once in a lifetime opportunity for people from different countries to put their differences aside and compete with each other in peace. Some of the athletes who compete in the Olympics end up becoming great friends with their competitors, some even ended up marrying them like Nadia Comaneci and Bart Conner for example!

Just after the opening ceremony, the American basketball team (The dream team) had booked out the Sydney 2000 on Captain Cook cruises. When the night was over, we all disembarked and in the middle of a deserted carpark in Darling Harbour, I got to break out in perfect harmony with the wives and girlfriends of the Dream Team singing Amazing Grace!

Beautiful and underrated song. I was 19 back in 2000 and I watched 8 events at the games, including the Closing Ceremony. In some ways I prefer that time period compared to the world now! I miss the spirit of the Sydney Olympics. It will be nice for Brisbane to host it in 2032 but nothing will compare to Sydney 2000. So unique and at the start of the new millennium. A great opening ceremony and many great Aussie moments during the games.
