Nikki, You also might look into getting a HAM radio. Not only do they have frequencies that people all over the world can hear you but they also carry frequencies that don't require a license that can transmit up to 2 - 5 miles away depending on where you are at.
@adventureswithfrodo27212 жыл бұрын
sorry what is considered HAM radio are alll licensed frequencies. it is pointless now a days to have a HAM radio as the ultimate evolution of the cell phone has replaced the Radio. I started my Ham radio endevor back in the 70s when you could connet to a relaystateion what would allow you to reach a repeater station that could dial out to a phone. Sounds like a loop has closed.
@thereturningshadow2 жыл бұрын
@@adventureswithfrodo2721 And what about if the cell towers go down or if she drops her phone off a cliff? Or if she simply has no cell service where she's at? Phones are great but the service is STILL NOT everywhere. You can buy a hand held HAM radio and just not use the licensed frequencies but only the frequencies NOT licensed that they have now, for emergencies when a phone is useless. The equipment has changed since the 70s also.
@realtyrocks19698 ай бұрын
@@adventureswithfrodo2721you're an idiot. Im a licensed Ham and GMRS operator. Cell phones don't replace either. Cell phones go through cell towers and ham and GMRS uses repeaters. In an emergency you can use any frequency even if you have no license. Search and rescue actively listen to those frequencies and it could save your life having one. If you get a cheap $30 Baofeng you could load HAM, GMRS, FRS, MURS, the NOAA weather stations etc into one radio. Even better would be to have a Garmin Inreach that uses satellites. Having a method of communication is vital to survival if you get lost. But there is nothing no loop hole and Cell phones don't replace ham. If you don't know what you're talking then just shut up. Your dumb advice will end up killing someone

Thank you for the info because not being a big hiker myself it's good to know. I'm glad to see that Camper does pick-up some of the slack by carrying some of his own supplies (what a Prince and he's such a cutie). You've been a whirlwind of info for so many life experiences and I do appreciate it. Many thanks to you and Camper, happy trails.

Hi Nikki.. Just something I carry is a crank flashlight that also can charge my phone. I use to take a power bank like you but if I got lost or stuck out for days, the model I have uses solar as well as the crank to charge, plus it puts out a ton of light. Just a thought for you to be ready for the unexpected. Take care as always and be safe.

Good advice for us. Using salt tablets made me think when I was in the coast guard in tropical areas the engine room got up to 150 degrees f , we had dispensers for salt tablets and unlimited red drink we called bug juice , necessary when humidity was 100%. Great expression on Campers face when you said “treats”. 👍😄🎩

I’m a dog guru. So a few tips. Those cheap knit gloves you see in winter. cut the fingers off. They make a good “sock” to protect dogs foot pad should it be necessary. Toe nails can stick out the knitted ends. Also a small fine tooth comb to remove cactus and stickers if they attack you (learned this while working with AZ game and fish). Items needing waterproofing can cheaply be stored in old prescription bottles Waterproof to about 1 foot🥴 Like i said, I know too much about dogs

Hi Nikki & Camper! Thanks for the great review on hiking essentials; totally empowering young (& older) women to get out there. I do echo what one subscriber said about some kind of locator device should you be in trouble. Only because I care and have heard this mentioned several times on some missing persons channels. Also, it appears so many u-tubers have sponsors these days but what I appreciate about your channel is that you’re giving back with your sponsorship unlike most who are just using it themselves and typically to support their lifestyle which I find less interesting and less inspiring. So WAY TO GO for being one of the few to champion a good cause, helping others/animals and not just yourself!!! You’re a great example to others❣️🐾👍

You did a great job of covering the elements and so forth, as always. Question. Did you notice the difference with platypus bags water taste verse other types? I am asking and throwing it out there cause I have and I use the extra system I think its the Gravity works 2.0. I mostly hunt and fish so I am not doing hikes in shorter times I guess like your doing. I also use a 6400 cubic inch pack for hunting and just overnights scouting and such. Still very basic to what you carry with exception to my tarp is heavier, a few fire methods, more cordage, knives, clothing and sleeping gear, depending on the location and weather of course. Binos, and game bags. So ya bigger pack but the pack is only like 7lbs. and frame harness type with load carrying. Those looking for these type packs I do recommend Mystery Ranch packs, the fit is great and the price is, Yes high. Quality is awesome. Ooops I just kept on rattling.

My dog will drink out of a square bottom half gallon zip lock bag. If I don't use the ziplock bag I use a plastic bowl from a noodle bowl. both are far lighter then the silicon dog bowls. Put a bear bell on your dog to so you can keep track of him. My dog get to roam as he has a ecollar on and is very well trained to come to a whistle or the ecollar beeping. He gets to live a good dog life. The problem with those emergance kits is they give you a false sense of security. THe mylar blank is NOT warm but ti will keep the wind off. Make sure the compass works. I find to many of them don't. Make your own kit with more quality gear.
