This is the girl version, but dudes be doing this too. I have a friend like this except I know he does it because the only way he can engage with the convo is if he has a story about the particular topic. I try to accommodate it by just matching his energy. Basically he tells a story, and then I tell one right back. 90% of the time it works and everything's gravy. But the other 10% of the time, it's a nightmare. I don't go to him with anything deep, painful, or introspective.

@@calmexit6483 Ah... nah, the reason I was asking, is that a lot of people with something like ADHD, have a communication style, where they want to show the person that they are listening and understand, by disclosing a similar anecdote. So, just as a singular example, if you're talking about something traumatic like someone close passing away and how it affects you, they may come back with "Yea, when my dad died, I was a complete mess." Maybe they'll go into more detail. Though the subtext for them is "I totally get what you're saying and I can relate" as a way to show you that they understand what you're going through and you arent alone. However, a lot of people see this as narcissistic grandstanding or one upping. Or making it about them. Which puts a lot of strain on relationships, as the people hearing it get tired of hearing it and react accordingly. Though for the person saying it, imagine you, normal brained person, telling someone "I completely empathize with you and Im here if you need me", only for that person to lose their shit about what an asshole you are for always making it about you. So due to the mismatch in comminication styles, both individuals think the other person is a dick. Where the ADHD person just stops saying anything because doing so opens then to great scrutiny, but then to the other person, they just start coming off as cold and distant. However, if this isnt the case and the person IS a dick who is just making it about themselves, then yea, screw them. This was just something I was curious about, as whenever I hear about such experiences, I oft wonder if the whole thing could be cleared up as just a misunderstanding, or perhaps that person really does just suck.

The way I best communicate is by being able to relate, and I relate by using a similar scenario or occasion I have experience with, otherwise I just listen or console, but then it feels empty. It's my way of attempting to connect though it can come across, or at least I'm always worried about it coming across as making it about me, which isn't the intent. I do think with certain people, it really is just a misunderstanding. What's very telling about whether it's likely to be a misunderstanding or someone who's just being narcissistic is the character of the person. Someone with more narcisisstic tendencies will just make it about themselves whereas if it's just a communication style, it usually comes back around to the other person in some way that shows connect. Very much as you said.
