I personally had last celebrated a birthday with cake and presents when I was 12. Since 13 like any other self-respecting male Greek kid, I was "too grown up" to be celebrating birthdays. So I went to study in the UK and I was 17 and 11 months. They had placed me in a students accommodation flat with another fellow Greek student and all the rest were English, 2 first years and the rest were all 3rd years. Then came the day of my birthday. What is funny is that not only I had forgotten about it but I had even went to the lecture, took notes and placed the date on top as I usually did, and it never stroke me that it was my birthday! LOL! So it is 17.00 back in the accomodation and I was making something basic to eat. There came the two 3rd-year English boys and started making tea. They ask me "Do you want some tea' and I automatically replied to them with something that surprised them ....welll keep in mind that in Greece we drink tea mostly when we feel sick, have fever or something! LOL! .... so I told them : "No, I am not sick, I am OK, thank you"..... LOL! "Sick" of course has the meaning of having a distorted mind, of being a degenerate or something! The guys froze and said "WTF! He is weird!". But they were friendly enough to keep the talk and at the same time the other Brits come to the kitchen, another 2 guys and 2 girls. Now one girl was having her birthday next week and she was saying what she and her friends were going to do. Another guy was also having his birthday in a few days so everyone started noting his/her birthday on the calendar. And then they asked me. I told them my date. Everyone froze. " That is today!"... "What are you sitting there! You should be out drinking!". I told them "Greek men don't celebrate birthdays, it's a "girlie thing".... double WTF moment ! Hahaha...... I added that "Greek men celebrate only namedays, and it is the nameday man that buys the drinks, not the other way round"... I remember they were still in WTF-mode but the boys liked the idea of the nameday especially because of the latter part! LOL!

We were just students sharing a flat, going to different faculties, were 3rd years, I was 1st year, we were not close friends even if we had very good relations. Also they were English, and one Irish, me and my roomate were Greeks in a university with tons of Greek students (back in the 90s, about 5% to 10% of the student population were Greeks - up to 1 in 3 Greek students would come to Britain at least for a masters if not for the bachelor as well like me) so we were indeed a community apart. Even if we were not as insular as the Chinese and Korean communities (also big back then) we were not really socially mingling heavily with the British students who were playing home. We were also more about travelling around to see Britain and hop to surrounding countries such as France and Holland on our free time. Back then I thought this would be my time abroad and then I would return to work in Greece. Little did I know that I would return only for my military service and eventually live all my adult life abroad.
